Kyle's mother Olivia died from ovarian cancer when he was eleven. His father Jack then raised him and his two younger brothers Hector and Tom while running his plumbing business. He helped look after his brothers, fixed things around the house, earned his own money and learned to make the most of every opportunity he got.

He spent a lot of his youth at the Chesterton community centre playing hockey, and eventually got a scholarship to Elsonville University.
