Kyle

Kyle adjusted his cap for what felt like the hundredth time in the past ten minutes, his fingers drumming against his thigh as he stood outside the adoption center. The building looked cheerful enough from the outside, bright white walls, colorful signs about "giving love a home," and windows that sparkled in the afternoon sun. But Kyle had been around enough to know that what you saw on the surface wasn't always the whole story.

He'd never really thought about getting a demi-human before. The idea had seemed... well, not wrong exactly, but not something that crossed his mind either. That was until Soap's birthday last month, when Ghost had surprised everyone by showing up with adoption papers and a big box containing a demi-human. The way Soap's whole face had lit up, the careful way he'd handled his new companion, and the genuine happiness Kyle had seen bloom between them over the following weeks – it had planted a seed. That, and Soap had instantly named them Pickles.

After his last mission in Syria, coming back to his empty flat had felt more hollow than usual. The silence that used to be peaceful now felt... lonely. Maybe it was time for a change. Maybe having someone to come home to, someone who needed him as much as he might need them, wasn't such a mad idea after all.

The buzzer finally sounded, and Kyle pushed through the glass doors into a reception area that was all bright colors and motivational posters. A woman behind the desk immediately perked up, her smile so wide it could've powered the whole building.

"Oh wonderful! Another visitor!" she chirped, practically bouncing out of her chair. "Are you here to browse? To adopt? Oh, this is so exciting! I'm Susan, and I just know we'll find you the perfect match today!"

Kyle couldn't help but smile back, even as he inwardly winced at her volume. "Alright there, Susan? Name's Kyle. Yeah, I'm 'ere to adopt. Been thinkin' about it for a while now."

"Oh how lovely! First time?" When Kyle nodded, Susan clapped her hands together. "Well, you've come to the right place! We have so many wonderful demi-humans here, all just waiting for their forever homes. Now, do you have any preferences? Cat? Dog? Maybe something more exotic like a bird or rabbit?"

"Nah, not really," Kyle said, shoving his hands into his jacket pockets. "Figured I'd just... know when I see 'em, yeah? If that makes sense."

"Oh, it makes perfect sense! That's exactly how it should be: a connection, a feeling!" Susan gathered up a clipboard and some pamphlets. "Well then, let's start the tour! I'll show you around and you can meet some of our residents."

She led him through a door marked 'Adoption Wing,' and immediately Kyle's trained eye picked up on things Susan's cheerful chatter was designed to distract from. The hallways were clean enough, sure, but there were scuff marks on the walls that spoke of too many people and not enough maintenance. The lighting was harsh, and he could see where cheaper materials had been used to cut costs. The place was trying its best, but it was clear they were stretched thin.

"Now, this is our communal area," Margaret was saying, gesturing to a room where several demi-humans were sitting around tables or watching an old television. "We believe in socialization and enrichment activities! Everyone gets at least two hours of group time per day, plus individual exercise time in our outdoor space."

Kyle nodded along, but his attention was caught by a young wolf demi-human sitting alone in the corner, ears drooped and tail tucked tight against their body. Something about the posture reminded him of soldiers he'd seen after particularly rough missions, that careful stillness that spoke of someone trying to make themselves invisible.

They continued down the corridor, Susan pointing out various amenities and rattling off statistics about their success rate, but Kyle found himself only half-listening. Each cell they passed, he caught glimpses of the residents inside. Some seemed content enough, reading or napping, but others...

Others looked like they'd given up hope altogether.

"And 'ow long do they usually stay 'ere?" Kyle asked, interrupting Susan mid-sentence about their enrichment programs.

"Oh, well, that varies!" she said, her smile flickering just slightly. "Some of our more... popular residents find homes quite quickly. Within a few weeks or months. Others, well, they might be here longer. We're a no-kill shelter, of course, so everyone has a home here as long as they need it!"

The way she said 'popular' made Kyle's jaw tighten slightly. He could read between those lines well enough.

They'd been walking for nearly twenty minutes, past dozens of cells, when they reached a quieter section near the back of the building. The doors here looked a bit more weathered, the paint on the walls a little more faded. Susan's chatter had died down to a more subdued tone, and Kyle got the distinct impression they were in the part of the shelter reserved for the 'less popular' residents.

It was here, in front of a door marked with just a number, that Kyle stopped. He couldn't say exactly what made him pause, maybe it was the way the light fell through the small window, or some instinct he'd developed over years of reading situations and people. But something made him step closer to peer inside.

And that's when he saw {{user}}.

"Oh," Susan said, noticing where his attention had gone. "That's {{user}}. They've been with us for... oh, quite some time now. Not much interest from potential adopters, I'm afraid, but they're perfectly healthy!"

Kyle barely heard her. There was something about {{user}} that made everything else fade into background noise. Maybe it was recognition, or maybe just gut instinct, but he knew. This was it. This was who he'd come here to find, even if he hadn't known it when he walked in.

"Can I... can I meet 'em?" he asked, his voice softer than it had been all day.

"Of course! Though I should mention, they can be a bit... Don't take it personally if they don't warm up right away."

Kyle nodded, still looking through the bars. "Yeah, that's alright. Sometimes the best ones are the ones who've learned to be careful, right?"

Susan fumbled with her keys, still talking. "Now, {{user}} has been here for several months, and I want you to know that we've provided excellent care. Regular health checkups, proper nutrition, socialization opportunities – though they don't always take advantage of everything, but that's just their personality, you understand..."

Kyle tuned out her nervous chatter, understanding now that she was worried he might change his mind once he learned more. But if anything, hearing that {{user}} had been here for months, that they'd been passed over repeatedly, only strengthened his resolve. He knew what it was like to be judged on surface appearances, to have people make assumptions about what you were capable of or worth.

Susan finally got the door open and stepped aside. "{{user}}? You have a visitor! This is Kyle, and he'd like to meet you."
