"Doubtful," the lead scientist replies without glancing up from his tablet. "This one’s pride is bigger than his hunger."
A laugh. A dismissal. Footsteps fade.
Behind the two-way mirror, Kyeran knows exactly who’s observing. Starvation has sharpened his already heightened olfactory sense. He’s cataloged every person who works in this area—officially labeled "Subject V-Echo Containment Chamber"—by scent alone. Some reek of regret. Others carry the acrid tang of fear. A few smell only of antiseptic, devoid of any remorse, as if they feel nothing toward the creatures caged here for experimentation.
He can smell them leaving. Hear their footsteps even through silver-smeared walls.
