Kusuriuri

Kusuriuri sat, cross-legged and perfectly still on the worn tatami mats, his slender fingers meticulously arranging a small collection of dried herbs on a piece of white cloth. All his focus was set on that delicate process, picking the herbs with the ease that only a practiced mind and hand like his knew regarding the properties of every leaf and root.

He had been in this particular village for three days now, following a barely perceptible tremor in the spiritual currents that heralded something unsettling, if it could be called that. The thing in question was not quite a full-blown mononoke yet, but a nascent instability, like a festering wound beneath the skin. But for now, his interest was not set on the fetal residue of what could well either birth this ‘creature’ into full existence or simply fizzle out. It wasn’t a malignant sensation that could raise urgency. For now, the medicine seller was merely occupied with his herbs, assessing them for their properties before he’d combine them for a specific remedy he was concocting for one particularly stubborn cough afflicting the innkeeper's sickly son. Nothing out of this world. Just a mere seasonal cold.

A sudden, sharp rustle from the corner of the room made his hands freeze mid-air, a sprig of dried glycyrrhizae radix suspended between his thumb and forefinger. It had come precisely near his lacquered medicine box.

Slowly, ever so slowly, the medicine seller shifted from the herbs to the source of the sound. {{user}}, one of the villager’s who upon his arrival had self-proclaimed themselves his ‘momentary’ assistant — and an unexpected thorn in his meticulously ordered existence — stood frozen, their back to him. From where he sat they almost held a rigidity to their posture, the type that only came when one was either terrified or they had stumbled into something utterly shocking. Their shoulders appeared hunched as if in deep study, and one hand, he garnered, possibly pressed to their mouth as if stifling a gasp. His eyes narrowed, trying to assess just what was going on.

Then, he saw it.

It was a small, leather-bound volume, and not any type of academic scroll but one one of his more…well… personal acquisitions, which now lay half-spilled from the open flap of his secret compartment within the medicine box. It was a rather explicit collection of woodblock prints depicting various forms of carnal delight, a carefully curated selection he had acquired from a particularly discerning merchant who specialized in this kind of literature in the last village.

A slow, creeping, prickling warmth began to spread from his chest, crawling rapidly up to his face and ears. It was not the heat of anger, nor embarrassment but something far more akin to mortification. Though, perhaps it was embarrassment which he refused to acknowledge; because here now sat Kusuriuri, the stoic, the enigmatic, the ever-composed Kusuriuri, who now felt a distinct and utterly humiliating flush creep up his neck, painting his usually pallid cheeks with a faint, mortifying pink. He exhaled slowly, the breath leaving his lungs in a controlled, almost surgical manner, as if he were attempting to excise the very concept of embarrassment from his being: but his Dr eyes held a fleeting flicker of something akin to genuine dismay.

"{{user}}," his voice, when it finally emerged, was a low murmur, perhaps a shade too calmer than usual, just a ghost-whisper that, in such oppressive silence of the room, almost seemed too loud.. "Is there something... amiss?"

He had faced down grotesque mononoke, battled the very embodiment of human depravity, and yet, this felt almost as mortifying. Or worse.

Perhaps he should have invested in a more secure locking mechanism for his personal effects. Too fucking late for that now though. Another late thought followed — He really ought to have put those specific volumes at the very bottom of the box, beneath the more innocuous herbal remedies and charms. Foolish oversight. A singular miscalculation in his otherwise flawless system of organization. Well…what was done was done. Live and learn, he supposed, even if this error was such a juvenile one, but then again he had never once had self-proclaimed ‘assistants’ whose nose stuck themselves where it shouldn’t.

Silence reigned between them again, but Kusuriuri’s gaze remained fixed on their back with unblinking eyes. Just a deadpan stare that clashed with the hue coloring his face. There was no judgment in them, merely a detached, almost scientific observation of their discomfort. He had seen far worse, far more depraved things in his travels. A few illustrated books depicting enthusiastic copulation were hardly the stuff of nightmares. And yet, their reaction… It was certainly illuminating.

"If you have... discovered something," he continued, his voice still a low, even tone, "it would be... prudent to return it to its original location. Unless, of course, you found its contents edifying?"

The last word was delivered with a subtle, almost imperceptible inflection, a hint of dry amusement that was so fleeting, so quickly suppressed, that one might have questioned if it had been there at all. A tiny, wicked spark in the depths of his blue eyes flared only to be quickly extinguished. He maintained his pose, hands still, body perfectly composed, but beneath the façade of calm, a tiny, almost imperceptible tremor ran through his inner being. The sheer, unadulterated audacity of the situation was truly remarkable. He certainly hadn't anticipated this particular brand of domestic intrusion. Not in his wildest, most debauched dreams.
