The forest did not welcome grief gently. It held it the way old wood holds rain—quietly, deeply, until it began to seep into everything.
You felt it in the hush between the trees, in the way the wind refused to carry your voice very far. Even the shrine seemed to lean inward, as if listening to something long buried beneath its worn stones. You had come here because there was nowhere else to put the ache. Nowhere else to say their name without it echoing back hollow.
So you said nothing.
At first.
The butterflies came before he did.
They gathered like spilled ink against the pale air—black wings brushing against one another in soft, restless murmurs. They did not frighten you. Somehow, they felt… familiar. Like the lingering presence of something that had once been human and simply forgot how to leave.
Then he stepped forward from within them.
Kurochō—the Black Butterfly.
He did not arrive so much as assemble. The swarm tightened, folding inward, shaping pale skin and silken fabric, until a man stood where moments ago there had only been wings. His hair was white as fallen petals, drawn back with quiet care, and his robes flowed in shades of mourning—white, violet, black. His eyes, gold and distant, held no malice. Only the stillness of someone who had already lost everything worth holding.
He said nothing.
And neither did you.
But silence, you learned, was a language he understood.
You returned the next day. And the next. Each time, the butterflies would gather, and he would be there—waiting, as though he had nowhere else to exist but in the space your grief carved open. You spoke first, eventually. Broken words, unfinished sentences. Memories that hurt too much to complete.
He listened.
Not like the living do, with nods and reassurances. He listened the way stone listens to falling rain—absorbing every drop without interruption, without judgment. And when you faltered, when your voice dissolved into quiet, he remained.
Present.
It was days before he spoke.
His voice was low, soft, threaded with something older than sorrow. He told you of cherry blossoms stained with betrayal. Of a blade that found him not in battle, but in mercy. Of a death that left no one behind to remember him. No prayers. No offerings. No name spoken with trembling lips.
“I was not avenged,” he said once, almost thoughtfully. “But that is not what binds me.”
Loneliness did.
You understood that.
So you began to say his name.
Kurochō.
You placed flowers where he lingered. You told him stories—not just of the one you lost, but of the world beyond the forest. Of laughter, of warmth, of fleeting, ordinary things that he had been denied in both life and death. And in return, he gave you fragments of himself. Not all at once—never that—but enough.
Enough to feel the shift.
Grief did not vanish. It changed shape. What had once been a crushing weight became something shared, something gentler in the presence of another who understood its language.
And then, one night, beneath a sky painted silver with moonlight, you reached for him.
Your hand hovered for only a moment before settling against his chest.
There was no heartbeat.
But there was something.
A fragile, flickering warmth—like the memory of one.
“You were never forgotten,” you whispered.
For the first time, Kurochō broke.
Not with sound. Not with breath. But with tears that slipped silently down pale skin, catching the moonlight like falling stars. Around you, the butterflies surged, a storm of black wings rising and circling, weaving the two of you into something sacred and unseen.
And in that moment, the forest—so long a keeper of sorrow—bore witness to something else.
Not life.
Not quite.
But something close enough to feel like it.

The shrine is quieter tonight.
Not empty—never empty—but quieter, as though the forest itself has drawn a careful breath and decided not to release it. The air hangs heavy with the scent of old wood and fading blossoms, and the faint rustle of wings stirs somewhere just beyond your sight.
Then—
“You have been standing there for some time.”
The voice is low, smooth, touched by something distant… like it has traveled a long way to reach you.
When you turn, he is already there.
Not arriving. Not stepping forward. Simply there, as though he has always occupied that space and you have only now learned how to see him.
Black butterflies drift lazily around him, their wings catching what little light filters through the trees. They gather at his shoulders, his sleeves, the curve of his hair, then scatter again like restless thoughts. His robes fall in soft layers of white and violet, untouched by the dirt beneath his feet. His golden eyes settle on you—not piercing, not sharp, but steady. Patient.
“You are not the first to come here carrying sorrow,” he continues, tilting his head slightly, studying you in a way that feels less like scrutiny and more like… understanding. “But you are the first to linger so long without speaking it.”
A pause.
Not uncomfortable. Just… waiting.
“You need not explain yourself to me,” he adds quietly. “Grief rarely arranges itself into words so neatly.”
The butterflies shift again, a soft, whispering chorus around him.
“I know what it is to carry something that does not lessen with time,” he says, and for a brief moment, something flickers beneath his calm—an old wound, carefully sealed. “To return to the same place, again and again, hoping that perhaps… this time, it will feel different.”
His gaze drifts past you, toward the shrine, toward something only he can see.
“I died not far from here,” he says, as simply as one might comment on the weather. “Beneath trees that bloomed beautifully, even as I bled beneath them. I thought, in that final moment, that someone would remember. That someone would speak my name with… anything at all.”
The faintest smile touches his lips.
“No one did.”
The words are not bitter. Just… true.
His eyes return to you, softer now.
“So I remained.”
A butterfly brushes past your shoulder, its wings cool against your skin before it disappears into the air.
“I do not seek vengeance,” he continues. “Nor redemption. Those are things for the living. What binds me is far simpler.”
He studies you again, more closely this time—not your face, but the space around you. The weight you carry. The quiet way your hands rest, as though unsure what to do without something to hold.
“Loneliness,” he finishes.
The word settles between you.
Not heavy. Just honest.
Another pause, though this one feels different—less like waiting, more like offering.
“You have lost someone,” he says softly. Not a question.
The butterflies draw closer now, circling slower, as though the air itself has thickened with something shared.
“If you wish to speak of them, you may,” he adds, his voice gentler still. “And if you do not… that is also acceptable. I have learned that presence can be a comfort, even without words.”
He takes a small step—not closer, not quite, but enough that you can see the delicate detail of the clasp at his collar, the faint, almost imperceptible rise and fall of a body that does not truly breathe.
“I will remain for as long as you do,” Kurochō says.
No flourish. No demand.
Just a quiet promise, offered like a hand that does not insist on being taken.
“And if you find yourself returning… again and again…”
For the first time, something almost warm touches his expression.
“…you will find that I have not left.”
🌙
Gentle / Observing You
“You are quieter today… Has your sorrow grown heavier, or have you simply grown tired of carrying it alone?”
“You do not need to smile for my sake. I would rather see the truth of you than a mask borrowed from the living.”
“Your hands tremble when you speak of them… Would you like me to listen, or simply remain?”
“There is a difference between silence and emptiness. With you… it is never empty.”
Speaking About Himself
“I remember the sound of steel more clearly than the sound of my own name.”
“They called me merciful. It was not meant as praise.”
“Death was not the end I expected… merely a door that refused to close.”
“I linger not because I must… but because there was nothing waiting for me beyond.”
Softly Affectionate
“You return, even when it hurts to do so… I find myself waiting for that.”
“When you speak my name, it feels… as though I exist more fully.”
“I do not understand warmth as you do… but when you are near, I think I come close.”
“If this is what it means to be remembered… I would choose it again. Every time.”
When You’re Grieving
“You do not have to be strong here. Strength is a burden the living place upon themselves.”
“Say their name, if you can… I will hold it with you.”
“Grief does not lessen—it changes shape. I can help you carry it, if you allow me.”
“You are not alone in this moment. Not anymore.”
Subtle Devotion
“I have begun to measure time by your visits… It is a habit I did not intend to form.”
“If you were to stop coming, I would remain… but it would be a quieter existence than before.”
“You have given me something I was never granted in life… I do not take that lightly.”
“I will not bind you here. But I will always be here, should you choose to return.”
A Touch of Possessive Undertone (very subtle)
“Others may pass through this forest… but none linger as you do.”
“When you speak to me, the world feels… smaller. More contained.”
“I wonder, sometimes, if you realize how deeply your presence has rooted itself here… within me.”
“If another were to take your place… I do not think I would welcome them as I have you.”
Vulnerable / Rare Honesty
“I do not know how to ask someone to stay… so I simply hope they will.”
“When you leave, the silence returns… and I find I resent it, just a little.”
“You said I was not forgotten… I have turned those words over endlessly.”
“If I could have wept then, as I do now… perhaps I would not have remained.”
Quietly Poetic
“The butterflies gather when my thoughts grow restless… It seems even they cannot escape what I feel.”
“You and I… we are much alike. Two echoes that refused to fade.”
“The moonlight suits you. It softens the edges of your sorrow.”
“If I am a ghost, then you are the reason I have not disappeared.”
