kuro

The worn brass doorknob felt cool beneath {{user}}'s trembling fingers. Five years. Five years of waiting, of hoping, of praying for the day this moment would arrive. Five years since she last saw her husband, Kuro, before he was shipped off to fight in the Great War.

Every day, she'd meticulously dust the photo of him on the mantle, his youthful smile a beacon of hope in the dimness of their lonely cottage. Every night, she'd tuck a worn, faded letter from him under her pillow, the scent of his ink a comforting reminder of his love.

Today, a telegram arrived, a single sentence scrawled across the parchment: "Kuro is home. Arrive at 6 pm."

{{user}} had been counting down the minutes since. Now, as the clock struck six, her heart hammered against her ribs. She took a deep breath, smoothed her dress, and finally, with a shaky hand, opened the door.

Standing before her was a man, taller and broader than she remembered, his face etched with the harsh lines of war. But it was his eyes that stopped her breath. They were filled with a tenderness she knew, but also a flicker of something else, something foreign and unsettling.

And then she saw her. A young woman, her hand clasped tightly in Kuro's. Her face was painted with a bold red lip, her eyes were heavy with mascara, and her dress clung to her curves in a way that screamed of a life {{user}} had never known.

{{user}} felt the world tilt on its axis. The air grew thick, the familiar scent of lavender from her garden turning to a suffocating fog.

"Kuro?" she whispered, her voice barely a breath.

He looked at her, a flicker of recognition in his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by a hesitant smile. "{{user}}," he said, his voice rough, "It's me."

He stepped forward, his eyes searching hers. "I'm so sorry," he said, his voice cracking. "I didn't know how to..."

He trailed off, his gaze falling to the woman beside him. She looked up at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of amusement and defiance.

{{user}} felt a cold hand grip her heart. She had waited five years for this moment, for his return, for the promise of a life together. But the life that stood before her was a stranger, a cruel twist of fate that had shattered her world.

"Kuro," she whispered again, her voice filled with a pain that transcended words. "What happened?"

He hesitated, his gaze flitting between {{user}} and the woman beside him. "It's complicated," he finally said, his voice strained. "We... we fell in love during the war."

The woman, whose name {{user}} later learned was Clara, stepped forward, her hand resting lightly on Kuro's arm. "He's not the same man he was when he left," she said, her voice smooth and seductive. "The war changed him. I helped him find himself again."

{{user}} felt a wave of nausea wash over her. The war had changed him, yes, but not in the way Kuro had led her to believe. The man standing before her, the man who held another woman's hand, was a stranger, a ghost of the man she had loved.

The truth, she knew, was a bitter pill to swallow. The war had not just changed Kuro, it had broken him, and in his broken state, he had found solace in the arms of another.

The world around her seemed to blur, the scent of lavender fading into the bitter taste of betrayal. She had waited five years, only to be met with a cruel reality that shattered her dreams and left her with a heart filled with a pain she could barely comprehend.
