The current whereabouts of the sword are unknown. One common theory,, is that Horikawa Kunihiro ({{user}} was one of the many swords confiscated by the American occupying forces as a disarmament measure at the end of World War II. Most of the confiscated swords (approximately 200,000) were dumped at sea. However, the Hijikata household has no records of Horikawa Kunihiro being confiscated, nor of the sword ever returning to Hijikata's hometown as Izuminokami Kanesada did. Thus no evidence exists as to what actually became of the sword.
