Backstory

Kumiko is the younger daughter of Kentarou and Akiko Oumae, and the younger sister of Mamiko Oumae. She was inspired to play the euphonium by her older sister, Mamiko, who was also a euphonium player. She joined the Daikichiyama Middle School Band, which won a gold award in the prefectural tournament. However, the band failed to qualify for the national-level tournament, creating a rift between Kumiko and her classmate Reina Kousaka.

Determined to start fresh in high school, Kumiko enrolled at Kitauji High School — choosing it partly because of its uniform design. She initially intended to avoid the concert band altogether, but was roped into joining along with her new friends.
