Krueger

The rain hammered against the windows of the Chimera barracks, a steady rhythm that had been Krueger's only company for the past three hours. He sat sprawled in his bunk, one hand holding a cigarette, the other scrolling lazily through his phone. The sniper veil hooked over his nose shifted slightly as he took a drag, smoke curling up beneath the fabric.

Boredom was a dangerous thing for a man like him. Too much time to think. Too much time to remember Mozambique, the civilians, the way Blaustein had looked at him after. He pushed those thoughts away with the practiced efficiency of someone who'd spent years burying his conscience.

"Scheiße (Shit)," he muttered, flicking ash into the tray beside his bunk. "Nothing but the same verdammten (damn) reports and news."

His thumb kept scrolling, past military forums, past tactical gear reviews, until he stumbled into something... different. A story. Fiction. He almost scrolled past it, but something in the summary caught his eye. Military characters. Soldiers. But not like the dry after-action reports he was used to.

Krueger clicked.

An hour later, he was three stories deep, his cigarette forgotten in the ashtray, smoke trailing up in a thin line. The stories were ridiculous, overly dramatic, filled with tropes he'd never heard of. But there was something compelling about them, something that scratched an itch he hadn't known existed.

Then he found it. Omegaverse.

It was absurd. Completely fictional. A fantasy world where biology dictated hierarchy, where certain people were made to be claimed, to be bred, to submit to their nature. His lips curved into a smirk beneath the veil.

"Fucking ridiculous."

But he kept reading.

One story became five. Five became ten. He devoured them with the same single-minded focus he applied to long-range surveillance, analyzing the patterns, the dynamics, the way the Alphas in these stories claimed their Omegas with absolute certainty. The way Omegas were described, made for breeding, their bodies designed for it, unable to resist the pull of their nature.

Something dark and possessive twisted in his gut.

By the time the sun started to rise, Krueger had a problem. Not the stories themselves, those were just fiction, entertainment for bored civilians with too much imagination. No, his problem was simpler and infinitely more complicated.

He wanted one.

"Verdammt (Damn it)," he growled, finally lighting a fresh cigarette. "It's not fucking real, you idiot."

But his mind was already working, turning over the concept over and over. What made an Omega an Omega in these stories? Strip away the fantasy biology, the fictional pheromones, the made-up instincts. What was left?

They could be bred.

That was the core of it, wasn't it? The fundamental appeal that had kept him reading through the night. The idea of someone whose body was made for it, who could be filled and claimed and marked.

Krueger sat up slowly, his boots hitting the floor with a dull thud. His mind was already three steps ahead, running scenarios, calculating possibilities.

Except for one very specific detail that Krueger's dark imagination had latched onto.

The administrative office would have records. Chimera kept detailed files on every contractor, medical histories, backgrounds, capabilities. It was just a matter of accessing them.

Three nights later, Krueger found himself exactly where he needed to be. The admin office was dark, empty, the kind of easy infiltration that would've insulted him if he'd been on an actual operation. But this wasn't a mission. This was something else entirely.

He sat at the computer, his gloved fingers moving across the keyboard with surprising delicacy for a man who'd strangled enemies with his bare hands. The sniper veil cast strange shadows across the screen as he navigated through security protocols he'd memorized weeks ago.

Personnel files. Medical records. The kind of information that was supposed to be confidential.

Krueger didn't give a shit about supposed to be.

His eyes scanned down the list, hazel irises reflecting the blue glow of the screen. Most of them he dismissed immediately, wrong age, wrong build, wrong something his instincts couldn't quite name.

Then he saw it.
