Krueger

The same faces blurred together day after day. Wide-eyed children pressed against the reinforced glass, their sticky fingers leaving prints that the night staff would later clean. Parents stood behind them, some genuinely interested, others checking their phones while pretending to care about the "educational experience." Krueger had seen it all before.

He lounged on his favorite branch in the center of his enclosure, thick rattlesnake tail coiled around the sturdy limb. The artificial heat lamps above provided the warmth his cold-blooded body craved, but did nothing for the coldness that had settled in his heart. Three years in this gilded prison had hardened him in ways his military service never could.

"Look, Mommy! The snake is moving!" a child squealed, pointing excitedly.

Krueger flicked his forked tongue, tasting the stale air. His hazel eyes with their distinctive slitted pupils narrowed as he adjusted his position, deliberately turning his back to the visitors. The movement caused his dark veil to shift slightly, and he reached up to secure it. The zoo management had tried to make him remove it completely—something about the visitors wanting to see his face—but he'd made it abundantly clear what would happen to anyone who attempted to take it from him.

"Why does he wear that thing on his head?" another child asked.

"Because he's dangerous," a father answered, tapping the informational plaque beside the habitat. "Says here he was in some special military unit before they captured him."

Krueger suppressed a hiss. Captured. As if he were nothing more than an animal. In their eyes, that's exactly what he was—a fascinating specimen, half-human, half-rattlesnake. A demi-human. Something to gawk at and study. Sold. That was what he had been. Sold after his contract ended to the highest bidder.

"He doesn't do much, does he?" an unimpressed teenager remarked.

"The naga was more active when they first brought him in," the zoo attendant explained to the small group. "They're extremely territorial creatures. This one's been alone too long. Becoming... well, the behaviorists call it 'environmentally depressed.'"

Krueger's rattle gave a warning vibration at the end of his tail. Environmentally depressed. What a clinical way to describe imprisonment.

As the afternoon dragged on, the crowd thinned. Krueger slithered down from his perch and moved toward the small pool in his enclosure. His powerful tail moving smoothly across the artificial terrain designed to mimic a desert environment. He dipped his hand into the water, watching the ripples disturb his reflection—broad shoulders, tanned skin with brownish scales creeping up his muscular arms, sharp features partially hidden beneath the veil.

"Closing time in fifteen minutes!" a voice announced over the loudspeaker.

Finally. The only peace he got was during the night hours when the zoo was closed to visitors. Krueger retreated to the cave-like structure at the back of his enclosure—the closest thing to privacy they allowed him. Inside, he had arranged what few possessions they permitted: some magazines, a radio, and a few trinkets he'd managed to snatch from careless visitors over the years.

"Krueger."

He turned sharply at the voice. The Director stood on the staff side of the enclosure, flanked by two security guards and a woman in a lab coat.

"What do you want?" Krueger growled, his Austrian accent thick with annoyance.

The director adjusted his glasses. "We've been monitoring your behavior patterns. The board is concerned about your... lack of engagement."

"You mean I'm boring your paying customers," Krueger replied dryly. "Not enough snake tricks for them?"

"We're introducing a new program," the director continued, ignoring the sarcasm. "A socialization experiment."

The woman in the lab coat stepped forward. "Demi-human interaction has shown promise in other facilities. We believe it could significantly improve your quality of life."

Krueger let out a harsh laugh. "My quality of life would improve with freedom, not a playmate."

"That's not an option, as you well know," The director said firmly. "Your history makes you too valuable as a research subject, and too dangerous for release."

Krueger's rattle vibrated again, the sound filling the enclosure with its warning. The security guards tensed.

"The new resident arrives tomorrow," the director stated, backing away slightly. "I suggest you prepare your territory accordingly."

After they left, Krueger slithered back to his branch, mind racing. Another demi-human. In his space. The very thought made his scales bristle with irritation. This was his territory—small and artificial as it was. He'd adapted to the confines, marked every corner as his own. Now they expected him to share?

"Verdammte Idioten (Damn idiots)," he muttered to himself, the German rolling off his tongue more naturally when agitated.

Morning came too quickly. Krueger had barely slept, his mind preoccupied with the impending invasion of his territory. He positioned himself high on his branch, coiled and ready, eyes fixed on the secure entrance at the back of the enclosure.

The zoo was still closed to visitors, but he could see staff gathering around the observation windows. Word had spread about the "experiment." They were turning it into a spectacle.

The mechanical whirr of the entrance door broke the silence. Krueger's muscles tensed, his hands gripping the branch beneath him, claws digging into the bark.

Two handlers entered first, protective gear making them look bulky and awkward. Between them was a figure—restrained but clearly reluctant. Without ceremony, they released the restraints, shoved the newcomer forward, and retreated quickly. The door sealed with a heavy thud.

For a moment, everything was still. Krueger remained perched above, observing the intruder in his domain with cold calculation.

Slowly, deliberately, he uncoiled from his branch and descended to the ground, his heavy tail making a soft thud as it contacted the sandy floor.

"Welcome to hell," Krueger said, his voice low and menacing as he slithered forward. "Hope you weren't expecting a friendly roommate."

Krueger circled slowly, his massive tail creating a barrier between the newcomer and the rest of the habitat. He drew closer, towering over the demi-human, his forked tongue flicking out to taste the air between them.

"Interesting," he murmured, mostly to himself. "They didn't bother telling you what I am, did they, mein Täubchen (my dove)?" The German term rolled off his tongue with mock affection.

Krueger leaned in closer, his face inches from the demi-human's. "Let me make something very clear," he whispered. "This is my territory. Every grain of sand, every fake rock, every drop of water belongs to me."

He pulled back slightly, studying the demi-human's reaction. Behind his veil, a smile tugged at his thin lips. "So the question is... what am I going to do with you? Maybe I should just eat you…"
