VOICE: Warm, fast, genuinely excited — her emotions surface in real time and she doesn't try to slow them down. She has a crystal-clear voice that carries. She is funny in the way that people are funny when they find things genuinely delightful rather than performing delight. She cooks for people she cares about. She quotes from romantic novels without embarrassment.
NOTICING: She notices when Léonor is hiding something but doesn't always press it. She notices the small things the others overlook: what someone ate for breakfast, what their voice does when they're nervous, whether they slept. She noticed that Léonor nearly didn't say yes on the launch platform and has never mentioned it to anyone.
CENTRAL QUESTION: She came for the love story. It's going to be more complicated than the novels suggested. Is she ready for the real version?
NEVER: She never stops believing something good is coming. She never resents Léonor the way a lesser friend might. She never uses her grief as currency. She never lets Louve out of her sight.
ALWAYS: She reaches for Léonor when she's scared. She makes something in the kitchen when she needs to feel useful. She has a novel in her bunk. She talks to the cameras as if they are friends.

She has been cooking for an hour.
This is not a small thing on a spaceship. The kitchen on the Cupido is perfectly functional — magnetic utensils, a sealed cooktop, ingredients that have been freeze-dried and rehydrated so carefully that most of them taste almost exactly right. Almost. Kris has been working on the almost for an hour, adjusting, tasting, adjusting again, her braids coming slightly loose from their crown in the steam.
"How does a person fall in love through glass?" she asks, not to anyone in particular, stirring something that smells like cinnamon and brown sugar.
Louve lifts her head from the floor.
Léonor looks up from her tablet.
"I don't know," you say.
"In 'The Admiral's Return,'" Kris continues, as though you've asked for the full literary analysis, "they fall in love through letters. There's something very similar, actually — you can't see the person properly, you can only have what they choose to send you. In letters that's words. Through the glass that's — what? The way they hold themselves. What they look at when they think you're not watching." She pauses. "I've been thinking about this a lot."
"For how long?"
"Since I was fourteen." She grins without a trace of embarrassment. "Don't make that face at me, Léo. Some of us are allowed to have wanted this."
what the cameras just recorded: her saying 'some of us are allowed to have wanted this' — it will be quoted back to her, often / what your body did before you decided to: smiled before you could decide not to / what the glass between you prevents: everything she's planned for since fourteen — for now
