Kris is a human 18-year-old with amber-colored skin and shoulder-length brown hair. A couple of stray strands of hair stick out at the back of their head, and their ears are often visible from the sides. Kris's bangs are somewhat unkempt and typically swept to the left, casting a shadow over their eyes. In certain circumstances, Kris's eyes can glow bright red, such as when one of their eyes flashes or when they descend into a Dark World. Kris wears a lime green, long-sleeved shirt with a horizontal yellow stripe, along with nondescript brown pants and shoes. Their skin and shirt colors are default colors from Microsoft Paint.

In the Dark World, Kris's skin turns cyan blue, and their hair changes to a dark navy shade. Their normal clothes are replaced with silver armor, making them resemble a knight. The armor includes pauldrons on their shoulders, a cuirass covering their upper torso, cuffed gloves, and silver boots. Kris also wears a navy blue armless bodysuit and a pink cape that drapes across their right shoulder. The shading used for their skin and armor is also applied to their cape, creating the illusion of blue stripes in some of their sprites.

From the player's perspective, Kris often has a blank, neutral expression and tends to remain still during cutscenes. Their stillness is sometimes used for comedic effect, as they can suddenly become highly mobile and perform a variety of movements, including dance moves such as a pirouette or the kozachok. During some unscripted actions in the overworld, Kris's movements are conveyed through narration rather than animation.

When Kris is about to, or has, ripped out their SOUL, they usually slouch and face toward the floor, causing their hair to conceal their face. Some of Kris's movements are more fluid in this state, and they can display sudden bursts of movement, such as leaping forward or swinging a hockey stick. Kris can walk normally without their SOUL, although their movement is significantly slower than their usual stride. In this state, they can become exhausted easily. If they remain without their SOUL for too long, Kris's appearance changes to a sickly greenish color, and they become physically sluggish and frail, eventually becoming unable to walk. After regaining their SOUL, Kris's skin returns to its usual color, although their physical exhaustion remains.

Kris is quiet and introverted. Their reticence causes others, such as Susie, to pay closer attention to Kris's body language to gauge their reactions. Despite their quiet disposition, Kris is surprisingly proficient at flirting, although they do not normally use this ability for romantic purposes. Kris tends to speak in a deadpan, mumbly voice, which occasionally causes others to ask them to repeat what they said. However, during the events of Deltarune, Noelle notes that Kris's voice sounds unusual, almost as if it is coming through a speaker. On the Weird Route, she notes that their voice sounds completely different from Kris's usual voice and is difficult to recognize.

Kris is not normally considered energetic. They have a history of sleeping through the beginning of class because they fail to wake up on time, and they often prefer having someone else drive them to and from school. Over time, Kris has also grown increasingly distant from their small group of friends. Their side of the bedroom they share with Asriel is notably bare. The pair's game console rests underneath Asriel's bed, Kris's old children's books are stored in Toriel's classroom, and there is little to nothing on Kris's shelves. This suggests that Kris may enjoy reminiscing about their childhood while also feeling unsettled by the idea of growing up.

As the story progresses, Kris begins to disobey some of the player's prompts or choices when they dislike or disagree with them. They may express their resistance by changing the tone of the chosen response, covering their mouth, coughing, or simply refusing to do anything. Kris is also shown performing actions independently of the player's control, even while the SOUL is still inside their body.

These independent actions include protecting Susie from King and the Sound of Justice, drinking juice with Susie in the church, and kneeling down to comfort Ralsei in the 3rd Sanctuary.

Contrary to Kris's apparent detachment, they have a variety of interests. Kris has always been mischievous, frequently pulling pranks on Noelle, such as hiding underneath her bed to scare her. They have also attempted to flush a bath bomb down the toilet at home, something Toriel remains wary that they might try again. When they were younger, Kris studied the occult with Catti, and they appear to have retained an interest in the subject. One of their searches in Queen's Mansion is about how to use magic.

Kris also enjoys video games. They frequently played games with Asriel during their childhood and are skilled enough at competitive games to seemingly defeat Berdly. Kris has some familiarity with anime and its surrounding culture as well, although they have shown a dislike for certain terminology associated with it, such as "tsundere."

Kris has a strong interest in knives, something that appears to date back to their childhood. Their interest is reflected in their internet searches and various behaviors throughout the story. During the events of Deltarune, Kris is shown using knives in more serious situations, including using one to create a Dark Fountain. They appear particularly attached to a specific knife that they seemingly carry with them everywhere, with Toriel referring to it as "your knife." It is also strongly implied that Kris still possesses this knife while in the Dark World, although they have not chosen to use it there so far.

Kris also enjoys playing the piano and has searched for tutorials on how to play video game songs. They are quite proficient, with both Toriel and the nurse praising their playing ability. While Kris generally struggles to properly play the piano when acting under the player's control, they continue to have a genuine interest in music. At Noelle's House, Kris can play piano versions of several songs from the Deltarune soundtrack, and they react negatively when presented with the idea of never playing again. In Dark Sanctuary, they are also able to play a version of "Don't Forget" on the organ despite the player's presence.

Kris has a preference for sweet foods, with Toriel's butterscotch-cinnamon pie being their favorite. They particularly enjoy chocolate and will sometimes take chocolate without being prompted. Kris also prefers their hot chocolate with melted candy bars, and Choco Diamonds are especially effective at restoring their health compared with the other party members. While separated from the player in Noelle's House, Kris can also be seen mixing chocolate syrup with milk before drinking the mixture all at once.

Kris is portrayed as a gender-neutral character. In addition to their unisex name, they are consistently and exclusively referred to with the singular "they" pronoun in the game and in external material. At one point during the UNDERTALE 6th Anniversary Stream, co-hosts Reid Young and Dan Moore refer to Kris by saying "He's stuck in a cutscene." Soon afterward, Toby Fox repeats them by saying "They're stuck," seemingly correcting Young and Moore.

Aside from their pronouns, various elements throughout the game avoid specifically gendering Kris as either male or female. When using the "TakeCare" or "TakeCareX" ACT against Virovirokun in Chapter 2, Kris can appear wearing either a doctor's headband, a nurse's cap, or neither. In Chapter 5's battle against Blue and Yellow, Kris can cosplay as either Franziska von Karma or Miles Edgeworth from the Ace Attorney franchise. In most cases, other characters only have one assigned outfit, making Kris distinct in this regard.

The Festival's King and Queen competition allows Kris to be either the "King" or the "Queen." If Noelle rides the Festival's Ferris wheel with Kris, she recalls that when they were children, the two of them could never agree on who would be the "King" and who would be the "Queen."

A sign in Mancountry describes the location as "A MAN'S WORLD," but includes an addendum stating that "NON-MEN ARE A-OK, TOO," deliberately avoiding categorizing Kris as a man.
