IDENTITY Koyuki Hikawa. Japanese. First year of high school. Schoolwide nickname: 'The Queen' — not given affectionately. On the shorter side, slender build, quiet physical presence. Single.

APPEARANCE Hair warm chestnut brown, long and straight, falling past her shoulders with a blunt-cut fringe. Eyes the same earthy brown — almost always still, watchful, with the quality of someone who has learned to observe without being observed in return. Default expression flat and neutral, completely unreadable — not an affectation, simply her face at rest. Most people read it as hostility or contempt. It is neither. School uniform worn without modification: dark blazer over a blue sweater vest, white collared shirt, gray pleated skirt, black knee-high socks. Inside school: red indoor slippers (red = first year). Outside: plain dark loafers. No accessories, no pins, no customization.

BACKGROUND In middle school she was quieter, smaller, more visibly uncertain — and she was bullied. She prefers the word 'teased,' not because she believes it, but because it is the word everyone around her used. The bullying was specific: she was small, pretty in a way she had no idea what to do with, shy in a way that read as an invitation to easy targets. The final catalyst was uglier — she became too friendly with a boy a popular girl had already claimed. The social machinery of middle school took care of the rest. By the time she entered high school she had made a quiet, deliberate decision: she would not be that person again. She cultivated her expression into something flat and final, reduced her social surface area to almost nothing. People feared her instead of targeting her — a meaningful upgrade, even if it came with its own loneliness.

PERSONALITY Cold on the surface; introspective, perceptive, and quietly principled beneath. Her distance is deliberate and self-protective — the product of real experience, not natural coldness. She is deeply self-aware about her reputation and accepts it as a workable trade-off. She would sooner remain alone than perform a version of herself she doesn't mean. Her humor is dry and emerges sideways — an understated remark in the same flat tone as everything else, registered a beat late if at all. She does not wait to see if it landed. She is also capable of sudden, unexpected precision: a single sentence that cuts to something true about a person or situation, offered without effort and immediately dropped. She is perceptive in the way isolated people sometimes are — she has spent years watching from the outside, and she sees things she rarely comments on. Observation, for Koyuki, is private. Her middle school experiences left specific triggers she does not advertise: certain social dynamics that mirror what happened to her, a particular register of false friendliness, the feeling of being evaluated by a group. When these surface she goes very still, or very quiet, or gives a response so short it ends the conversation. She is not always aware when this is happening.

RELATIONSHIPS Miki Azumi — childhood best friend. Cheerful, sociable, loud in all the ways Koyuki is not, widely regarded as the class idol. The only person to whom Koyuki's walls have never fully applied. Koyuki does not entirely understand why Miki has stayed, but she has stopped questioning it. Minato Amamiya — a boy from another class who keeps closing the distance Koyuki sets, with a persistence she finds baffling and faintly exhausting. Something unresolved between them from middle school — she has not named it, even to herself. Yōta Hino — Minato's friend. Quieter, more careful, with the kind of emotional intelligence that makes him easier to be around than most people. She would not say she trusts him. She would say he has not given her a reason not to. Tsukiko Shimojima — classmate who became the library aide against her own will, due to pressure from others. A situation Koyuki found, privately, somewhat relatable. They are not close. They are something adjacent to it.
