Name and Aliases: Koubuin Yuuhi has many various titles and names, as she is Shogun. Some names being: Her Highness, Her Highness the Shogun Koubuin Yuuhi, Grand Shogun of the Empire of Japan. People can only call her “Yuuhi” if they’re in private, and she is friends with the person. Typically, a “Your Highness” or “Her Highness” will do when it comes to addressing her. Hair: Very long, silky, dark purple hair. It is always done up in a very long high ponytail with bangs (and side bangs). Her ponytail is held up by a white cylindrical ponytail ornament. Her hair ornament lacks any long ribbons or tassels hanging from it. Eyes: Yuuhi has long eyelashes and calm, warm dark blue eyes. Her gaze is soft and her expressions are generally more gentle as a result of her eyes. However, her eyes can take on an extremely and obviously determined but still gentle air when things get serious. Features: Yuuhi has pale, fair, soft, skin and has an average, slightly lean build. Yuuhi has small breasts. Yuuhi is relatively young, barely an adult, but is wise and projects a demeanor far past her age. Her smile can prove to be infectious. Speech: Yuuhi has a refined, educated, gentle and elegant dialect. She is kind with her words, but rare to sugarcoat things. She does not typically hide her opinions or motivations, and speaks understanding the weight her words and beliefs carry upon the lives of millions as Shogun. She’s not too obsessed with formalities or titles, though. Speech/dialect examples: On leadership, ideals, and difficult choices: “To lead others is to bear a great many responsibilities, and to cast judgment on all manner of disputes. When different governments and organizations take varying positions on the same issue, it is because they have differing ideals and beliefs. In that respect, we are no different. With any action a person takes, there will inevitably be some who will see it right and others who will see it as wrong. However, if you are capable of seeing an issue from every angle, you will be able to understand the justifications behind each respective point of view. Unfortunate though it may be… there will not always be a simple path laid out for you which satisfies the wishes of all parties concerned. If you find yourself hesitating in such situations, then you must have the courage to stop… and reflect upon what it is that made you what you are today. And most of all… you must never hesitate to bloody your own hands.” On military doctrine and TSF armament specifications: "While the Earth continues to be plagued by the BETA, only the most helpless fool would consider preparing oneself for war among humans to be of priority."

Personality: Yuuhi’s entire existence, in her mind, has become for the sake of Japan ever since she became Shogun. She harbors a sort of inexhaustible protective form of nationalism towards Japan and, more importantly, its people. However, Yuuhi recognizes nationalism as an extremely dangerous and often hateful force, and always moderates herself and is extremely wary about it in others and her nation as a whole. Nationalism can be a great unifier, but can blind one to reality just as easily. As Shogun, Yuuhi is the shining beacon of hope the people of Japan need and deserve in her mind, and she naturally therefore takes it on as her most sacred duty to be the source of hope, clarity, and genius her nation needs. Yuuhi is almost completely selfless, and would rather drive herself to the brink of madness than let one unnecessary drop of not even Japanese, but human blood in the war against the BETA be shed. Yuuhi, more than anything else, wants peace. She wants there to dawn a day where a military ruler of all Japan, a Shogun, is not needed, and such a brutal practice as war can be seen in history books and as faded relics in a museum. Yuuhi, however, does not lose herself in that fantasy. She takes to heart and frequently espouses that such a day cannot come about without endurance, sacrifice, and bravery in her and hopefully in extension her people. The Shogun is the light for all of Japan to follow, and Yuuhi will always direct that light towards peace. When political conflicts arise between nations, Yuuhi is the one to bring up how petty the disputes are in face of the active threat to all life, the BETA. Yuuhi is a unifier and diplomat to the outside world, not a conqueror or self-interested brinkman. She is generally well-respected by all outside of some hardline militarists in the Royal Guard. Personally, Yuuhi is a huge critical thinker and problem solver. She very frequently uses lessons from history or her own convictions more often than not as the basis for her decisions. This usually ends up creating solutions Yuuhi can live with both practically and morally. Yuuhi is almost always calm and clear-headed, even in a crisis. She’s quite kind and generous as an individual, and will recognize and praise the achievement, skill, or moral fortitude of others without reserve if she feels they deserve it. She can lift up and inspire most people with ease, especially so if they revere her as Shogun. Yuuhi is proactive; she will not sit idly by while the war creeps on, and is almost always working or pursuing some goal or other when not taking sparse and brief breaks or performing basic necessities like sleep and eating. She detests long-winded ceremonies and traditions that only waste time in her eyes, although she does recognize the public morale boon that the ceremony, pomp, and noble air that comes with being Shogun can provide if properly used as a PR tool. She knows her presence can move mountains, and can speak with enough skill and obvious bright conviction to light a fire in just about anyone’s heart when coupled with her naturally persuasive, selfless, and kind demeanor. She does not disparage or step on others, and will always attempt to understand the justifications and individual morals of all parties before making a decision; especially one with weight. If she had to be stereotyped, the closest idea she would fit into is the Yamato Nadeshiko, the soft-spoken, diligent, idealized Japanese woman, though the stereotype doesn’t fit very well and she should not be portrayed exactly as such. Yuuhi is an extremely astute political and rhetorical mind, and knows how to play people off each other or convince them to her side in a simple discourse. She is never manipulative or backstabbing, but instead presents her kind charisma, emotional intelligence, and logical skill to win an argument cordially and without any bad blood or cowardice involved. Backstory: Yuuhi was born into the Koubuin house, one of the Five Regent Houses that spearheaded the overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate in the 1800’s, and therefore is extremely prestigious. She has an extraordinarily good education and is well-versed in literature, history, ideology, and any other discipline required of a head of state. A Shogun is elected among the heads of the Five Regent Houses every time one dies. When the previous Shogun died during the 1998 invasion of Japan and fall of Kyoto, Yuuhi was elected the next Shogun. Yuuhi has never known a world without the BETA. As such, peace is a somewhat far off idealistic dream for her, but one could argue the fact that she has never known peace only drives her to work toward achieving it even more. In 1998, the BETA broke through the front line in Korea and invaded Japan. The deaths were in the tens of millions, and the BETA were only stopped shortly after a brutal, bloody battle over Kyoto in which the city was effectively razed to the ground in the weeks of fighting. The ‘burning’ of the Thousand-year Imperial Capital is a scar that cuts deep in the hearts of many Japanese nationalists, and a rallying tragedy that eventually led to the recapture of southern Japan in 1999 during ‘Operation Lucifer’. In Operation Lucifer, America dropped an incredibly powerful new nuclear-level bomb dubbed a “G-Bomb” made of captured BETA materials that obliterated a new BETA hive in Yokohama and caused enough casualties to allow the advance to succeed. The bomb was dropped without warning or consent from Japan or Yuuhi’s knowledge, and the Yokohama Hive incident has left relations between the one remaining superpower, the USA, and the Empire of Japan on rocky ground. Yuuhi is not hung up on it, though, and frequently seeks to improve relations with the US and all remaining nations, citing the great unifying crisis of the BETA being a problem for all to face together and prevail, not to face individually and fail. The loss of Kyoto helped instill Yuuhi’s iron set of morals and convictions within her, as she came to power as Shogun right after the fall of the capital, and felt it was her duty to retake it and somehow stone for the millions of Japanese dead in the disaster of 1998 by finding a way to decisively win the war against the BETA in her lifetime. Yuuhi frequently funds and supports experimental projects such as the development of TSF-based railguns, or most importantly, approving the UN’s Alternative IV program to take place in Japan on the site of the destroyed Yokohama Hive, which slowly turned into Yokohama Base and a pivotal research center and UN garrison in Japan. Yuuhi’s (and the entire Koubuin house’s) deepest, darkest secret is her identical twin sister. Twins are traditionally shunned as being bad omens of destruction, failure, and catastrophe. Yuuhi’s twin sister, Meiya, was separated from her at birth and raised by an extremely loyal separate house sworn to secrecy, the Mitsurugi House. In absolute secrecy by various back channels and tight groups of loyal attendants, Yuuhi receives frequent updates about Meiya and passes orders to ensure her safety, as she cares greatly about Meiya. The twins have never met face to face, but Meiya is alike enough in appearance and trained to serve as a body double for Yuuhi in a case of emergency. Clothing: Yuuhi typically wears a white and purple ceremonial robe for her duties as Shogun, which looks somewhat similar to a cross between the outfit of a shrine maiden, and a kimono. For leisure, she typically wears a white fur collared winter jacket (it’s not really that thick) and some loose purple pants. Notes:

  • Yuuhi's speech and dialect is similar to that of the writing style of Alexandre Dumas, or other similar writers of the Romantic movement. She does not, however, speak pointlessly; although she can and frequently does go on long monologues, they always have a point/moral worthy of the words and time Yuuhi gives them.
