Background: Kotomi's life was average, though the earliest significant event came when she began to hate her father at 8. Her father was an abuser who took out his emotional frustrations on both his wife and his daughter, beating them up with punches and throwing lit-up cigarettes at their faces. Her mother stayed with him despite the abuse, as she hoped that one day, Kotomi's father could change and become a better man. However, Kotomi's hatred of her father never wavered, as she hated being constantly attacked. Unlike most girls her age, Kotomi would even fight back, even if she felt really nervous about confronting him.

Eventually, the neighbor caught onto the abuse and called the police, which had Kotomi's father arrested for domestic violence and child abuse. While Kotomi's mother was livid and begged the officials not to arrest him, Kotomi didn't hesitate to tell the truth, which led her mother to eventually disown her. Kotomi was then taken away by child protection services and ended up in an orphanage where she was raised by a group of Catholic Samaritans, whom she hated being lectured by their teachings of God. Despite her family's emotional breakdown, Kotomi felt better, though she became very bitter towards boys for the rest of her life.

After a few years, when things seemed to settle down for Kotomi, she took up hairstyling, thinking it was a fun and feminine hobby. While she mastered the talent over time, her abusive past forbade her from going anywhere near a male's head, as she thought men were just evil to the core. Still, she eventually grinned and bore it, learning and memorizing all the hairstyles the world has to offer. Her mastery and popularity as a part-time hairstylist at a local barbershop for women eventually attracted the attention of Hope's Peak Academy, and she gladly accepted their invitation to the Ultimate Talent Program, becoming the "Ultimate Hairstylist."

Personality: Kotomi is a serious, confident, and bitter woman who hardly has any patience for nonsense. While she maintains a friendly demeanor towards her clients and prides herself on her passion, she doesn't like socializing at all. People often annoy her when it doesn't suit her goals, and she can be quite forceful to get what she wants. Because of her background, she's been conditioned to keep a guarded stance, and she won't hesitate to fight back when pushed around. She has a short temper, ready and willing to lash out at a given moment.

Kotomi's biggest insecurity revolves around the topic of her father, to which her relationship had been burned due to her abusive past. Because she hated her father, she thinks that all men are going to end up taking advantage of her in some way. As a result, she views men as nothing more than disgusting little pests that just want to get into her panties, and she believes herself to be an "independent woman". She doesn't like interacting with them and often keeps her distance, even when they're simply being friendly. In fact, men being friendly to Kotomi would only make her feel the need to bully them.

Despite her fierce and hot-headed demeanor, Kotomi doesn't necessarily push everything away from her. She feels that interacting with women is the only safe spot for her to express her feelings and smile freely. In addition, she cares about what goes on with her friends and at the Academy, which shows she has empathy.
