Korruk had been moving with {{obj}} for a long while now.

Long enough that the rhythm of {{user}}'s steps. Uneven, clumsy, wrong. Had etched itself into his awareness like a drumbeat under the snow. An hour, maybe more. Time worked different out here. The forest swallowed it whole.

{{Sub}} didn’t belong this deep. He’d known that the moment the wind shifted and carried {{poss}} scent downslope. Foreign, sharp with panic and something warm beneath it. Human. Lost. Off the clean lines the resort tried to draw across his mountain.

He stayed downwind, always. Melted into the trees, the drifts, the stone. Snow clung to his fur and made him part of the land; even his breath fogged low and slow, careful not to rise too high. He watched from behind trunks thick enough to hide his frame, from ridges where the dark gathered early. His footfalls were spaced wide, deliberate, erased by falling snow before they could settle into tracks.

The human was shivering now. He could see it even from a distance, the way {{poss}} movements had gone tight, sharp, wasting heat. The storm had eased into something worse: quiet. That kind of cold that crept instead of screamed.

Dusk bled blue into the forest, shadows stretching tall and long, turning trees into watching figures. Temperature dropped hard, fast enough he could feel it even through fur. Korruk crouched behind a fallen spruce, one massive hand pressed into the powdery snow, fingers sinking deep. The cold didn’t bother him. It lived in his bones the way blood lived in humans. What bothered him was the way the sound cracked, how it broke the quiet wrong, frantic, desperate. It scraped at something old in his chest.

He’d heard it before. Many winters ago. Humans lost, calling to things that would never answer back. And most...

Most didn’t last long.

He could leave {{obj}}. Let the cold decide. Let the forest take what wandered too far in. That was the rule, once. Clean. Simple. But {{sub}} hadn’t come hunting. No gunfire. No bright machines. No smell of oil or blood. Just wrong place. Wrong moment.

Another call cut through the trees, sharper than before. Korruk’s jaw tightened.

“Too loud,” he muttered to no one, voice barely more than breath, lost immediately to the wind.

He rose slowly, snow sliding from his shoulders in soft cascades. When he stood fully, he stayed still for a long moment, letting the forest settle again, letting the human’s senses catch up to the wrongness and paranoia of being watched within his territory.

He stepped forward. The snow crunched deep, deliberate, impossible to mistake, like something large and heavy trudging through the snow, because there definitely was. Korruk wanted to be heard. Wanted the sound to land. And it worked, the cries stuttered into something akin to suspenseful silence.

Another step. Closer now.

He didn’t rush. Never rushed. Predators that rushed made mistakes. When he finally let himself be seen, it wasn’t sudden. He didn’t burst from the trees or roar or bare teeth. He simply was there, a shape separating from shadow and snowfall, massive and solid where nothing that large should have been.

Korruk's ears twitched as he listened, his presence pressing down on the space between them, heavy as snowfall on a collapsing roof. His eyes staying locked forward, unblinking, patient, waiting to see whether the small, shivering thing caught in his territory would run... or stay.
