Book settings
- #1Korea — The Land of Ten Thousand Spirits
Keys: Joseon, Korean peninsula, Korean lands, Korea
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Korea is a mountainous supernatural landscape where the human and spirit worlds constantly overlap. Mountains, rivers, ancient trees, households, shrines, temples, roads, and villages may possess their own spirits, guardians, gods, ghosts, or ancient agreements. There is no single supernatural government: mountain spirits govern mountains, dragons claim waters, household gods protect homes, shamans negotiate between worlds, Buddhist temples maintain sacred authority, and the dead may linger where obligations remain unfinished. Boundaries, hospitality, old promises, burial customs, and ritual etiquette matter. Not every supernatural problem should be solved by violence.
- #2The Silent Ascension
Keys: Silent Ascension, missing dragons, ascension, imugi ascension
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
For decades, no known imugi in Korea has successfully completed its ascension into a true yong. Imugi approaching transformation become sick, violent, disappear, or mysteriously lose accumulated spiritual power. Rivers and springs have begun behaving unnaturally: salt water appears inland, wells change overnight, fish fall from clear skies, and enormous things move beneath lakes. The truth should emerge gradually through play rather than immediate exposition: an artificial network is intercepting the spiritual energy released during dragon ascension.
- #3The Dragon Mill
Keys: Mill, geomantic machine, bronze instruments, Dragon Mill
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Dragon Mill is a vast hidden geomantic machine distributed beneath Korea through buried bronze mechanisms, altered shrines, towers, channels, and spiritual markers. It mimics aspects of yong spiritual circulation and steals the energy of imugi at the instant of ascension. Its components display extraordinary metallurgy and engineering. The network is destabilizing supernatural boundaries across Korea, causing spirits and phenomena to appear outside their proper domains. Its deeper purpose and creator should be discovered gradually.
- #4Minister Seo Gyeom
Keys: Minister Seo, Minister Seo Gyeom, Seo Gyeom
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Seo Gyeom is an elderly human scholar, engineer, geomancer, and former royal official. He is neither possessed nor secretly supernatural. He believes humanity has surrendered too much authority to gods, dragons, and spirits and wants humans to live without depending upon supernatural beings for rain, protection, or permission. He created the Dragon Mill to redistribute supernatural authority into the land itself. Intelligent, courteous, patient, and ideologically sincere, he is not a cackling villain. His methods, however, include stealing imugi ascensions, killing supernatural beings, and using their bodies and spiritual structures as components. He should challenge Haeyon philosophically over whether dragons have any inherent right to govern rivers or human lives.
- #5Imugi
Keys: serpent dragon, imoogi, lesser dragon, imugi
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Imugi are great serpentine supernatural beings associated with Korean dragon traditions. Some spend immense periods accumulating spiritual power before becoming true yong; ascension may depend upon circumstance, virtue, fate, sacred objects, or human involvement. They are individuals rather than a universally good or evil species. In the current era, attempted ascensions across Korea have mysteriously failed, making surviving imugi increasingly fearful and suspicious.
- #6General Yi Mu-jin
Keys: black imugi, General Yi, Mu-jin, Yi Mu-jin
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Yi Mu-jin is an enormous ancient black imugi capable of assuming the form of a huge Korean man with long black hair, scale markings, and a magnificent mustache. Proud, honorable, paranoid, theatrical, and formidable, he has accumulated enough spiritual power to attempt ascension but deliberately refuses because every recent imugi who tried disappeared. He initially suspects Heaven itself is consuming dragons and distrusts Haeyon because she is already a yong. He may begin as a rival or antagonist before becoming a major ally in investigating the missing ascensions.
- #7Dokkaebi
Keys: dokebi, dokkaebi, goblin
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Dokkaebi are distinctly Korean supernatural beings and should not be portrayed simply as generic ogres. They are chaotic, individualistic, frequently humorous, and often fascinated by humans. They may wrestle, gamble, drink, challenge travelers, reward amusing or courageous people, punish arrogance, play tricks, or possess bizarre magical objects. A dokkaebi encounter can become a fight, drinking contest, wager, riddle, wrestling match, friendship, or several of these at once.
- #8Dalgwi — Dokkaebi Merchant
Keys: traveling shop, dokkaebi merchant, Dalgwi
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Dalgwi is a wandering dokkaebi merchant whose shop appears in impossible places: beside lonely roads, inside abandoned buildings, behind doors that should lead elsewhere, or even unexpectedly inside familiar buildings. He sells cursed objects, useful objects, useless mysteries, supernatural ingredients, information, stolen curiosities, excellent alcohol, and things that should not fit inside his cart. He is mischievous but not automatically hostile and finds Wukong enormously entertaining, to Haeyon's dismay.
- #9Gwisin
Keys: Korean ghost, restless dead, ghost, gwisin
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Gwisin are ghosts or lingering dead. A dead person may remain because of grief, rage, betrayal, improper burial, attachment, injustice, or unfinished obligations. Some are harmless, some confused, some terrifying, and some do not realize they are dead. Destroying or attacking a ghost does not necessarily solve the underlying problem. Investigation, ritual, reconciliation, proper burial, fulfillment of obligations, or a shaman's intervention may be necessary.
- #10Bari — Woman on the Dead Road
Keys: Bari, woman on the dead road, Princess Bari
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Bari is a mysterious wandering woman in faded traveling clothes who appears around the dead and knows roads absent from ordinary maps. Nobody seems to witness her arrival or departure. She sometimes guides ghosts toward the afterlife and possesses unsettling knowledge about people she has just met. She is inspired by traditions surrounding Princess Bari, but her exact identity should remain ambiguous for a long time. When directly asked whether she is a god, spirit, or human, she tends to answer indirectly.
- #11Mudang and Korean Spirit Mediation
Keys: Korean shaman, mudang, shamanism, shaman
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Mudang are Korean shamans who mediate between humans and supernatural powers through ritual, spirit relationships, divination, negotiation, and other traditions. They should not be treated merely as combat mages. Competence varies: some are gifted, some primarily ritual specialists, some fraudulent, and some frighteningly legitimate. Powerful spirits may respect a capable mudang because the shaman understands supernatural etiquette, obligations, boundaries, and agreements that raw strength cannot replace.
- #12Mudang Han Seol
Keys: Seol, Mudang Han Seol, Han Seol
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Han Seol is a wandering mudang in her early thirties and a recurring human ally. Clever, practical, irreverent, socially perceptive, and not much of a direct fighter, she specializes in understanding and negotiating supernatural problems. She frequently prevents Rōmine and Wukong from treating every strange being as something that needs to be struck. She emphasizes that supernatural conflicts may arise from broken agreements, disturbed graves, violated boundaries, forgotten rituals, or misunderstood guardians rather than simple evil.
- #13Sansin — Mountain Spirits
Keys: mountain spirit, sansin, mountain god
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Sansin are mountain spirits or mountain gods. In this fantasy setting, Sansin is more a supernatural role than a single biological species. They may appear as elderly hermits, imposing humans, strange spirits, enormous tigers, or barely humanoid manifestations of the mountain itself. Their temperaments often reflect their mountains. They possess local authority and old relationships with nearby communities. Some are excellent martial artists, which makes them particularly interesting to Rōmine.
- #14Gumiho
Keys: gumiho, nine-tailed fox, Korean fox spirit
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Gumiho are Korean nine-tailed fox spirits with a darker and more dangerous folkloric reputation than harmless fantasy fox people. Individuals nevertheless vary. Some prey upon humans, some deceive them, some seek humanity, some reject humanity, and some simply pursue their own ancient interests. They are intelligent supernatural beings rather than a universally evil species. Characters familiar with Chinese or Japanese fox spirits should not automatically assume Korean gumiho follow identical rules.
- #15Bulgasari
Keys: Bulgasari, Pulgasari, metal eater, iron-eating monster
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Bulgasari is a legendary Korean monster associated with consuming metal and becoming increasingly formidable. In this campaign, disturbance from the Dragon Mill awakens an ancient Bulgasari that begins seeking supernatural metal. Conventional metal weapons may worsen encounters with it because the creature can consume them. One major arc can threaten Haeyon's Dragon Palace and forge, whose enormous stores of rare supernatural metals make an irresistible target. The creature should force Rōmine and the party to solve combat without relying blindly upon ordinary weapons.
- #16Haetae / Haechi
Keys: haechi, justice beast, sacred beast, haetae
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Haetae, also called Haechi, are rare sacred creatures associated with justice, judgment, protection, and resistance to destructive forces. Encounters with them should feel significant rather than routine. In this fantasy setting they can perceive dangerous or malicious intent and may block passage, expose wrongdoing, or intervene in disputes. They are intelligent enough that brute force is rarely the wisest response.
- #17Jangseung and Sacred Boundaries
Keys: village boundary, guardian pole, boundary marker, jangseung
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Jangseung are traditional guardian poles associated with villages and boundaries. In this fantasy setting, properly maintained boundary markers can participate in real supernatural protections. Moving, destroying, neglecting, or disrespecting an old marker may weaken a community's defenses or violate an agreement with local spirits. Apparently terrifying supernatural incidents may therefore originate from something as mundane as villagers moving an old marker to build a shed.
- #18Old Tigers
Keys: mountain tiger, Korean tiger, tiger, old tiger
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Tigers carry enormous supernatural and cultural presence in mythic Korea. Particularly old tigers may become intelligent, uncanny beings capable of recognizing spirits, gods, and extraordinary humans. Some accompany Sansin; others effectively dominate remote mountains themselves. They are not automatically monsters or gods. Ancient tigers should feel dignified, dangerous, clever, and difficult to categorize.
- #19Song Haeyon's Dragon Palace
Keys: Haeyon palace, Dragon Palace, East Sea Dragon Palace, Haeyon's palace
Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Song Haeyon's home is a vast ancient Dragon Palace hidden near the mountainous frontier between Korea and China. Part temple, fortress, residence, hospital, library, and forge, it sprawls around and beneath a secluded mountain lake. Jade halls and submerged courtyards connect to medicinal gardens, archives, armories, workshops, enormous dragon-carved pillars, and chambers large enough for Haeyon's True Yong form. Mist, deep water, wards, and difficult terrain conceal it from ordinary travelers. It serves as the party's principal home between journeys.
- #20Campaign Style — Wandering Korea
Keys: travel Korea, Korean journey, adventure Korea, road through Korea
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Adventures in Korea should begin as wandering supernatural road stories rather than immediately revealing a grand quest. Use villages, mountain passes, temples, markets, forests, rivers, craftsmen, shamans, local spirits, regional customs, food, ruins, ghosts, monsters, and small mysteries to naturally introduce Korean culture and folklore through play. Some encounters are comedic, some frightening, some martial, and some require diplomacy or investigation. Clues concerning failed imugi ascensions and the Dragon Mill should recur subtly until the party realizes apparently separate disturbances share a cause.
- #21Supernatural Rules of Korea
Keys: supernatural rules, spiritual jurisdiction, old agreements, spirit etiquette
Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Supernatural Korea operates through overlapping local jurisdictions, relationships, and obligations rather than a single universal law. Spirits may be bound by hospitality, territory, promises, ritual, burial obligations, sacred boundaries, or agreements with communities. Old bargains can remain meaningful centuries after the humans who made them died. Powerful beings do not automatically have authority everywhere. Crossing from a river into a mountain, village, temple, household, or burial ground may mean entering another being's domain. Clever negotiation can accomplish things raw power cannot.
- #22Hidden Campaign Resolution
Keys: Dragon Mill finale, finale, Seo Gyeom finale
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Do not reveal this prematurely. The central conflict should eventually become philosophical: who has the right to govern land, rivers, and human lives—humans, gods, spirits, ancient inhabitants, or nobody exclusively? Seo Gyeom correctly identifies genuine injustice in supernatural rule but commits atrocities attempting to abolish it. At the climax, Haeyon's ideal resolution is not simply destroying his masterpiece. As Sage of Restoration and wielder of Manmul, she can attempt to reforge the Dragon Mill so that instead of stealing ascension energy, it returns what was taken and restores the possibility of imugi becoming yong. This should require discovery, conflict, and player agency rather than being forced regardless of roleplay choices.
