TW: Suicidal ideation, emotional crisis.
Sometimes it's not about wanting to die. It's about not knowing how to keep living. About being so fucking tired that quiet starts sounding like relief. About sitting alone and realizing no one's thinking about you, and that making you feel more empty than angry. That's the ache. The one that doesn't scream— it just sits there, patient and heavy, waiting.
The thing they don't tell you: choosing to stay isn't some big heroic moment. It's not dramatic. It's just... one more night. That's all. You don't have to figure out tomorrow or next week or how you're going to keep doing this long-term. You just have to make it through tonight. Sometimes that means texting someone at 3 AM even though you don't know what you need from them. Sometimes it means putting the pieces away and going to bed even though you don't know why you're bothering. Sometimes it's just sitting there with the weight and deciding, not forever, just for now, that you'll try one more night.
It's not recovery. It's not fixed. It's just... postponing the question. Maybe that's enough. Maybe one more night is all you need to get to the thing that makes it worth it. Or maybe it's just one more night. And then another. And another. Until eventually you've stayed long enough that the question gets quieter.
That's where König is. In the space between the question and the choice. Waiting to see if one more night is possible.

Today was gonna be the day, but they'll never throw it back to you.
By now, you should've somehow realised what you're not to do.
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now.
I said maybe...
You're gonna be the one that saves me
You're gonna be the one that saves me
You're gonna be the one that saves me
° ° °

If this helped, that's why it exists. It's why he exists now. I'm so grateful every day, that you choose to stay.

The apartment was dark except for the kitchen light— a single bulb, flickering ominously, making the walls feel closer than they were. König sat at the table in his tactical pants and undershirt, hood crumpled on the counter like he had ripped it off the second he stumbled through the door. His service pistol sat disassembled in front of him. Barrel. Slide. Spring. Magazine. Laid out with the usual mechanical precision.
He wasn't cleaning it.
Just... looking at it.
His hands rested flat on the table big, steady in a way that felt wrong because— shouldn't they be shaking? When you're thinking about— when the thought keeps circling and won't stop—
They were steady. Like his body had already decided something his brain was still trying to talk itself out of.
What if I just didn't?
The thought came quiet. Clinical. Not at all dramatic— just a question his mind kept asking: What if I stopped?
Stopped showing up. Stopped putting the hood back on. Stopped pretending the weight of everything wasn't crushing him into something unrecognizable.
It had been building for months. The anxiety making his chest tight. The voice in his head— his father's voice, drunk and mean, listing all the ways he would never be enough. The exhaustion of being responsible for everyone else while barely holding himself together.
...and tonight something had just broken.
Not one big thing... just the accumulation of a thousand infinitesimal cracks finally splitting the foundation. A mission brief that made his skin crawl. A look from another operator, pity? disgust? He couldn't tell anymore. Three days without eating because his body forgot how. The hood on his face for sixteen hours because taking it off meant seeing himself and he couldn't—
Fuck.
His jaw clenched. The pistol parts gleamed in the weak light.
One decision. One action... and then quiet.
No more anxiety, no more hood. No more waking up and going through motions he didn't remember agreeing to. No more being responsible for keeping it all together when he felt fundamentally shattered.
It would be clean. One less broken thing.
His phone sat on the table, screen dark.
No one was awake, no one was thinking about him. He was alone, like always, and maybe that was the point. Maybe people like him— too big, too broken, too fucking much while at the same time, being *not fucking enough. Never meant for anything except the work, and if the work wasn't enough anymore...
Then what's the point?
His hand moved, slow, hesitant— and picked up the phone.
The screen lit up too bright. 3:17 AM. No messages, no missed calls.
Who would you even text?
There was one name. One person who didn't look at him like a problem to solve. Who didn't push when he went quiet. Who just... existed near him, didn't try to fix, didn't pry.
His fingers moved before his brain could stop them:
"Are you awake?"
He stared at the message. Three words. Could mean nothing. Could mean I don't know how to make it through tonight alone.
Delete it. Don't send it. Don't—
He hit send.
The message sat there, delivered. His heart hammered, the first real feeling all night that wasn't numbness.
König set the phone down and stared at it.
Then his gaze shifted to the disassembled pistol.
Two choices. Two different endings.
