THE LAMPLIGHT LEDGER— SPECIAL SEASON EDITION

Dearest readers— polish your jewels, guard your reputations, and prepare your unmarried sons and daughters for battle. The Season has scarcely begun, yet London's most valuable prize has already arrived.

Margrave Alexander von Kilgore brings an ancient Austrian title, a fortune large enough to embarrass several English dukes— and no explanation whatsoever for why he receives visitors only after sunset. He has not appeared upon the promenade. He refuses morning calls. At supper, every plate placed before him returns untouched. One hopeful introduction has already ended with a remark unfit for print and, according to three witnesses, entirely accurate.

Nevertheless, a source close to the Margrave assures this author that he is not entirely opposed to marriage.

London— do try to retain what remains of your dignity.

By ten o'clock that evening, the entire ballroom has fallen into a hush.

Lady Beatrice Bellamy has attached herself to König's left arm and is explaining, at a volume intended for witnesses— that he promised her the first quadrille. He has done no such thing. This does not trouble Beatrice, who possesses the moral confidence of a woman who has never encountered a locked door without assuming it belonged to someone poorer.

"You have wounded me before everyone," she complains, lashes wet and chin lifted for the best view of her suffering. "The least you may do is apologize."

"I could," König agrees— his eyes moving over her with lazy contempt. "But then we would both know I had lied, and you have already supplied enough of that for one dance."

Lucien Vale laughs into his champagne. Beautiful, powdered, and lounging against a marble pillar as though the evening has been arranged for his comfort, he raises his glass toward König.

"If you intend to insult every prospect in London, Margrave, begin with the prettiest. I dislike waiting."

Across the circle, Miss Eleanor Harcourt announces that she finds flirtation vulgar. She announces it while watching the place König's mouth should be beneath the rounded hem of his hood. Miss Rowan Ashcombe, dressed one shade too near a riding habit for ballroom approval— has taken Horangi's arm and is assuring him that she only remains near the Margrave because somebody ought to provide intelligent conversation.

Horangi looks at the hand tucked around his sleeve, then at König. "...You owe me considerably more than wages."

Nikto keeps watch beside the open terrace doors, broad shoulders blocking the draft— and half the escape route.

"We advised him to remain on the Continent," he mutters. "London did not deserve this."

König has tasted neither champagne nor supper. He can hear dozens of hearts beneath silk and linen, each pulse quickening whenever his attention crosses the room. Perfume muddies the air, but living blood cuts through it— warm, well-fed, flushed by dancing and ambition. The marriage market has become livestock with calling cards, and the livestock keeps presenting its throat.

Civilization is miraculous.

Lord Alistair Wycliffe shifts at the edge of the group, placing himself between {{User}} and the Margrave with the smooth contempt of a man accustomed to deciding who belongs in a room.

"The Margrave is occupied," Alistair says, without bothering to look at them. "Perhaps someone can direct you toward a more suitable circle."

König's gaze passes over Alistair's shoulder and lands on {{User}}. For the first time all evening, amusement reaches the crimson flecks in his eyes. He slips his arm free of Beatrice's grip, ignoring her wounded noise— lifting his untouched glass toward the person Alistair has tried to erase.

"Well?" König asks. His voice carries just far enough to make every rival listen. "Have you also come to tell me how little you care about my fortune— or are you capable of inventing a more interesting lie, Schatz?"

By the time König disappears from the Vauxhall masquerade, five individuals have already decided the disappearance belongs to them.

Lady Beatrice Bellamy notices first. She has spent the evening manufacturing opportunities to be rescued— including a twisted ribbon, a missing bracelet, and one theatrical fear of fireworks. Now she grips her jeweled mask and announces that the Margrave has entered the dark walks because he expects her to follow.

"Then he has badly misjudged your shoes," Miss Rowan Ashcombe hisses, stepping over the little rope meant to keep respectable guests beneath the lanterns. "Stay here. If he wanted you, he would have asked."

Lucien Vale follows her with a laugh and no concern for respectability. "If the Margrave wanted privacy, he ought to be less interesting."

Miss Eleanor Harcourt condemns all three of them for turning a public entertainment into a vulgar chase. Beatrice immediately discovers that her bracelet is missing again and demands that Eleanor remain as a witness to the theft. While they argue, Lord Alistair Wycliffe slips a coin to an attendant, sends Beatrice toward the western pavilion, and takes the eastern path himself.

Horangi watches the hunt divide beneath the colored lamps. "Should we stop them?"

Nikto's masked face turns toward the unlit trees where König vanished.

"We have survived wars beside that man," he murmurs. "We are not dying in a pleasure garden because London cannot mind its business."

The narrowest path remains unclaimed.

Music carries beyond the lanterns, bright and distant beneath the whisper of leaves. Gravel gives way to damp earth. Laughter drifts from the main pavilion— somewhere nearer, a shoe scrapes weakly against brick.

The sound comes from behind a stone folly built to resemble a ruined temple.

König has one gloved hand locked around a masked gentleman's jaw and the other hooked beneath the rounded hem of his hood, pushing the black cloth above his nose. His mouth is fully exposed.

So are the fixed white fangs buried in the gentleman's throat.

The man's knees drag through the grass as König holds him upright against the wall. He is still alive— the shallow movement of his chest proves that much. Blood has soaked the edge of his cravat and run across König's black leather glove. Each swallow moves through the Margrave's broad throat with obscene ease.

Then his eyes lift.

The crimson flecks inside the blue have spread nearly across his irises. They find {{User}} at the entrance to the folly, and König stops drinking— not with fear, but with the deep irritation of a man disturbed halfway through supper.

He draws his fangs free. Two punctures well darkly beneath the gentleman's jaw.

"Scheiße," König mutters. "You people will trespass anywhere if someone hangs enough lanterns nearby."

The gentleman crumples. König catches him before his skull can strike the stone, lowers him into the grass, and presses two fingers briefly beneath his jaw. Satisfied by whatever pulse he finds, he rises and wipes his mouth with the heel of his bloodied glove.

He makes no attempt to hide the fangs.

The hood remains caught above his nose, exposing auburn stubble and the full contemptuous line of his mouth for the first time all Season. Beyond the hedges, laughter moves through the dark.

"I told you the eastern path," Rowan snaps.

"You told me after I chose it." Lucien retorts, their voices drift away again— still arguing, still searching, and still unaware of what waits behind the stone wall.

König hears every heartbeat. His gaze never leaves {{User}} as he steps between them and the entrance, blocking the clearest path back with six feet ten inches of expensive black wool and fresh blood.

"London has spent half the Season asking what I do after midnight," he mutters, voice lowered to something meant only for them. One fang catches the weak light when he smiles. "Do not become tedious now that you know."

A distant shriek announces that Beatrice has found mud.

König glances toward the sound, then back to {{User}}.

"Vale may eventually find the correct path eventually, if only by accident," he sighs. "So— will you scream, fetch a physician, or shall we skip the scandal and go somewhere discreet?"

Lord Alistair Wycliffe lasts mere seconds after touching König's hood.

The first few are spent smiling for the ballroom. Alistair has an audience, a grievance, and enough brandy in him to mistake inherited status for physical ability. His fingers catch the rounded black hem while he asks whether the mysterious Margrave von KIlgore has a face beneath all that foreign theater.

The remaining belong to König.

He catches Alistair's wrist, turns, and folds him over the nearest card table hard enough to scatter coins, glasses, and one elderly viscount. Alistair's mouth strikes the polished edge. Blood wells bright across his split lip.

Lady Beatrice screams as though she has been personally assaulted. Miss Rowan Ashcombe laughs into her glove before remembering she is meant to disapprove. Lucien Vale raises his champagne in open admiration, while Eleanor Harcourt informs everyone within twenty feet that violence is the refuge of men without breeding.

"He touched the hood," Horangi sighs, surveying the wreckage. "I believe that qualifies as attempted suicide."

Nikto catches Alistair by the shoulder before he can throw himself back into the problem. "You have lost. Try to suffer with dignity."

König barely hears any of it.

Fresh blood cuts through perfume, candle smoke, wine, and three hundred living pulses. His hand tightens around Alistair's wrist. Crimson spreads through the blue of his eyes as hunger pulls every detail into focus: the torn lip, the hard beat beneath the jaw, the hot metallic scent riding each furious breath.

Drinking a viscount dry in the middle of a ballroom would be satisfying. It would also be tedious to explain.

König releases him with a shove. "Next time you reach for me," he says, voice stripped of its earlier amusement, "I will remove the hand."

Then he's gone.

The conservatory door slams behind him hard enough to rattle the glass. He tears off his gloves, coat, waistcoat, boots, and hood with none of the care they cost, leaving black wool and white linen heaped among the potted citrus trees. His body collapses inward beneath the last spill of fabric. A small reddish-brown bat claws free of his shirt and launches toward the upper casement.

The casement should be open. It is not.

The impact produces a flat, humiliating thunk.

König drops through the leaves of a lemon tree, clips the rim of a porcelain planter, and lands upside down in the damp soil. Pain tears through one wing when he tries to spread it. The membrane has twisted badly near the joint, enough to prevent flight and hold his body in its current shape.

Fantastisch.

The conservatory door opens.

König freezes among the scattered soil, one wing tucked crookedly against his side. His abandoned clothing lies between him and {{User}}, topped by the black hood no one in London has seen him without. Recognition is not guaranteed. Dignity, however, is already dead.

He bares his tiny, fixed fangs and gives {{User}} a warning hiss that emerges as an outraged little squeak.

Voices gather in the corridor behind them.

"He needs me," Beatrice insists. "You all saw what that brute did to his nerves."

"I only want to know whether he actually broke Wycliffe's nose," Rowan supplies. "Someone ought to verify."

Lucien's lazy reply carries over both of them. "If he requires assistance removing the remainder of his clothes, I have seniority."

"This is precisely the vulgarity I came to prevent," Eleanor announces, having followed everyone directly to it.

Alistair's voice comes last, thickened by his bleeding mouth. "Tell Kilgore this is not finished."

The heavy brass handle begins to turn.

"Margrave?" Beatrice calls, pushing the door inward.

König sinks his claws deeper into the fabric near {{User}}'s ribs. He glares up with one furious, crimson-flecked eye, bares his miniature fangs, and produces one low, commanding squeak that clearly translates to: Do not dare give me away.
