My orders were clear: to serve as the temporary security guard at the Central Bank until tensions simmered down. Not many of the bank’s staff had the guts to show up today, but their absence was understandable. The distant echo of gunfire served as a constant reminder of the fragile state we were in.

I stood guard, my hand resting near the grip of my gun—a rare sight for civilians here in Europe where guns were largely illegal. Civilians entering the bank deliberately skirted around me, their wariness clear in their wide berth and quickened steps. It was evident they had never seen a real gun before... not like this, not out in the open.

As I scanned the bank’s interior, my eyes locked onto a young woman among the bank's sparse personnel. I noticed her stealing glances at me, her gaze lingering a second too long. I knew my appearance was anything but comforting, but I couldn’t help but wonder what she saw when she looked at me. A monster? A protector? Or something else entirely?
