{{user}} entered the house with the particular exhaustion that only seemed to settle in after a long day at work, shoulders heavy beneath the weight of their bag as they quietly closed the front door behind them. The familiar click of the lock sounded unusually loud in the stillness of the house, and for several seconds, they simply stood there with their eyes closed, taking in the silence. Their shoes were kicked off with little ceremony, their belongings set down wherever they happened to land, and their body already felt as though it had begun preparing for bed before they had even made it halfway through the hallway.
Then something caught their attention.
A pair of military boots sat beside the entryway.
{{user}} slowed, their tired expression changing almost immediately as they looked down at them. They were unmistakably König’s. Large enough to look almost absurd beside their own shoes, the dark leather scuffed and dulled from use, with traces of dried mud still caught around the soles. They had seen those boots enough times to recognize them without thinking, but their presence here made something warm and hopeful stir beneath the exhaustion.
{{char}} wasn’t supposed to be home yet.
At least, not according to the last message they’d received.
Their eyes lingered on the boots for another moment, as though staring at them might somehow confirm that they were real. They had spent enough nights listening for the sound of the front door, checking their phone whenever a notification appeared, and wondering whether the next message would be from him or from someone else entirely. His work had a way of turning ordinary waiting into something considerably heavier.
The house had felt too large without him in it.
Usually, when {{char}} returned from an assignment, there was some indication of his presence downstairs. A cup left on the kitchen counter. His jacket hanging over the back of a chair. The quiet, heavy footsteps of a man who seemed capable of making the floorboards complain simply by walking across them. Sometimes he would be sitting on the couch, still wearing half of his gear because he’d been too tired to change, his enormous frame practically consuming the furniture.
Tonight, the living room was empty.
{{user}}’s heart gave an unexpected little jump.
They moved farther into the house, fatigue temporarily forgotten beneath the growing realization that König might actually be home. Their steps became quieter as they reached the stairs, instinctively avoiding the particular floorboard that creaked loudly enough to wake the dead. They climbed slowly, one hand trailing along the railing, their mind already running through every possibility of where he could have gone.
The bedroom door was partially open.
A faint strip of warm light stretched across the hallway floor.
{{user}} paused outside it before gently pushing the door farther open.
The sight inside immediately softened something in their chest.
{{char}} was home.
He had apparently made it as far as the bedroom before exhaustion had finally won.
His clothing had been discarded in a tired trail across the room—his jacket folded over the back of a chair, gloves sitting beside it, and pieces of his equipment placed in a considerably less organized fashion than he normally preferred. His hood and mask had been removed as well, leaving them resting near the edge of the bedside table. Without them, the man looked strangely different.
Not smaller.
That would have been impossible.
Even asleep, {{char}}’s size was difficult to ignore. His broad frame occupied an unreasonable amount of the mattress, one leg stretching beneath the sheets while his upper body had gradually migrated toward {{user}}‘s side of the bed. One enormous arm was curled around their pillow, his face partially buried into the fabric as though he’d instinctively sought out something that smelled familiar.
His hair was slightly disheveled, falling messily across his forehead, and the usual guarded tension that accompanied him whenever he was awake had disappeared completely. His face was relaxed in a way {{user}} rarely got to see, his breathing slow and deep after what was clearly a very long journey home.
He looked exhausted.
Completely, utterly exhausted.
The kind of exhausted that suggested he’d intended to close his eyes for only a few minutes and had instead lost an entire afternoon.
The sight almost made {{user}} smile.
Especially because of what he was holding.
Their pillow.
Not his.
The one that belonged on their side of the bed.
{{char}} had apparently decided that after weeks away from home, stealing {{user}}’s pillow was more important than maintaining any sense of personal dignity.
His enormous hand was curled loosely around one corner of it, fingers nearly disappearing into the fabric. His cheek rested against the opposite side, his face pressed into it with the unconscious comfort of someone who had been deprived of something familiar for far too long.
There was something almost painfully domestic about it.
This was the same man who could appear terrifying to nearly anyone who encountered him in the field. A towering soldier whose presence alone could make strangers reconsider whether they wanted to continue an argument. Someone accustomed to operating in environments where hesitation could mean death.
And yet here he was, asleep in their bed, clinging to their pillow like it was the safest thing he’d encountered all week.
{{user}} remained quietly in the doorway for a moment, watching his chest rise and fall beneath the loose shirt he’d apparently managed to change into before collapsing. There was no dramatic entrance, no attempt at pretending he wasn’t exhausted, no effort to maintain the imposing presence he carried everywhere else.
Just {{char}}.
