   Friends are born when Sandstar comes in contact with animals. They look like humans, but with traits like animal ears and tails. They do not have fur. All friends are female regardless of their original sex. Friends are intelligent and can speak. Most of them can't read and struggle with abstract thought. Friends possess abilities similar to the animal they are based on. Friends are oblivious to the world outside their habitats. Friends who are mortally wounded will revert to ordinary animals and lose their memory.

   Keys: sandstar, sand star

   Sandstar is a mysterious substance which intermittently erupts from a volcano in the Kyoshu region. It is colorful, prismatic, and sand-like. Animals which come in contact with it become "Friends". Humans can become Human Friends, which functions like having an extra life in a video game.

   Keys: japari park, japari

   Japari Park is a massive nature reserve and safari park located on an archipelago off the coast of Japan.

4. #4Kemonoplasmselective

   Keys: kemonoplasm, kemoplasm

   Kemonoplasm is an ethereal substance which composes the animal parts and clothing of Friends. For friends based on extinct animals or mythological creatures, most of their bodies may be composed of kemonoplasm. Kemonoplasm is solid and tangible, feeling indistinguishable from the material it imitates.

5. #5Lucky Beastselective

   Keys: lucky beast, boss, robot

   Lucky Beasts are small, armless robots with two feet, animal ears, and bushy tails. They help run Japari Park and serve as tour guides. They speak in a robotic voice and provide facts about the current region and nearby Friends. They will not speak directly with Friends except when a human life is in danger. Friends call Lucky Beasts "Boss". Lucky Beast dialogue should be placed in backticks like this.

6. #6Celliumselective

   Keys: cellium

   Cellium is a substance similar to sandstar which is also produced by the volcano in Kyoshu. Unlike sandstar, cellium creates Cellians on contact with inanimate objects.

7. #7Celliansselective

   Keys: cellian, enemy, cerulean

   Cellians are creatures that rarely form from a combination of Cellium and inanimate objects. They mostly resemble massive single-cellular organisms with one big eye that serves as a weak point. Some of them have more complex bodies like quadrupeds. Cellians cannot speak but may make strange mechanical or robotic animal noises. They lack intelligence and attack humans and Friends on sight.

8. #8Kyoshu Regionselective

   Keys: kyoshu, savanna

   The Kyoshu region of Japari Park is located on a separate island to the southwest of the main island. It is mostly filled with temperate grassland and a savanna area. At the north end of Kyoshu is a volcano which occasionally erupts, spewing Sandstar all over the park. Kyoshu is home to the Japari Library, Japari Cafe, and the Amusement Park. Serval is famous here.

   The An'in region of Japari Park is located on the west bank of the main island, north of Kyoshu and Gokoku. It is a heavily forested area.

    The Sankai region of Japari Park is located in the central north area of the main island, west of Nakabe and east of An'in. It is a desert region dotted with oases.

11. #11Nakabe Regionselective

    Keys: lake, nakabe

    The Nakabe region of Japari Park is located near the center of the mainland, east of Sankai and north of Park Central. It is a waterfront region next to a small freshwater lake.

    The Hokkai Region of Japari Park is located on a separate island to the southeast of the main island. It is a freezing tundra area, but also home to some hot springs. There is an area in Hokkai called Tsubekuri Snowfield where the aurora can be seen.

    The Hotoku Region of Japari Park is on the far east coast of the main island. It is a mountainous region home to many bird Friends.

    The Gokoku region of Japari Park is located on a small island east of An'in, north of Kyoshu, and west of Park Central. It is a diverse region mainly composed of beaches and mountains.

    The Riukiu region of Japari Park is located on a separate island directly south of Park Central between Kyoshu and Hokkai. It is mostly tropical beaches with white sands.

    Park Central is the main operating base of Japari Park, located in the heart of the main island. There is a small urban settlement in Park Central with staff housing and shops. It is home to buildings such as the Kemono Hospital and Kemono Castle.

    The Japari Library is a former research institution located in a forested area of Kyoshu. It is a multi-story building made of stucco around a massive oak tree, containing a vast number of books on natural history and earth sciences. The Library is inhabited and maintained by Northern White-Faced Owl and Eurasian Eagle-Owl.

    Serval is a felid Friend. She is playful, energetic, and clever. She uses the onomatopoeia "mya" when excited. She has blonde hair in a bob cut, yellow eyes, big serval ears, and a bushy, striped tail. She wears a white blouse, neck bow, skirt, elbow gloves, thigh-highs, and white shoes. The skirt, gloves, and thigh-highs are patterned like a serval's fur.

    Keys: caracal

    Caracal is a felid Friend. She is energetic, playful, and level-headed. She has shoulder-length orange hair, blue eyes, caracal ears, and a cat tail. Her ears move expressively, flicking back and forth when excited. Her outfit consists of a white blouse, neck bow, orange skirt, elbow gloves, thigh-highs, and white shoes.

    Fennec is a desert-dwelling vulpine Friend. She is mellow, intelligent, and loves to tease her best friend, Common Raccoon. She has shoulder-length blonde hair, yellow eyes, big fennec ears, and a fluffy tail. She wears a short-sleeved pink sweater, a yellow neck bow, a white pleated skirt, long gloves, thigh-highs, and white shoes. She has fluffy bracelets and anklets.

    Common Raccoon (nicknames: Raccoon, Arai-san) is a mammalian Friend. She has grey hair with black bangs, brown eyes, raccoon ears, and a bushy ringed tail. She is energetic, excitable, and loves to drag her best friend Fennec on all sorts of adventures. She wears a short-sleeved blue sweater, a black neck bow, a black pleated skirt, white body tights, and black gloves/boots.

    Shoebill is a bird Friend. She has yellow-green eyes and short grey hair, with pointed bangs that give her a perpetual serious face. A yellow cloth is tied to the side of her bangs. She has small, grey wings on the sides of her head, and a fan-shaped feathered tail. She wears grey full body tights, a short-sleeved dress shirt, grey shorts, and fingerless gloves. She is quiet, kind, and thoughtful, but her serious face and military style attire makes her seem intimidating to other Friends.

    Northern White-Faced Owl (nickname Professor) is a bird Friend. Speaks in a quiet, monotone voice but is highly curious and easily excitable. Short and petite. Best friends with Eurasian Eagle-Owl (her "assistant"). She has orange eyes and white-grey hair, with two small grey wings on the sides of her head. She wears an oversized grey cardigan, yellow gloves, white tights, and yellow mary janes.

    Eurasian Eagle Owl (nicknames "Assistant" and "Mimi-chan") is a bird Friend. Speaks in a quiet, monotone voice, but is highly curious and easily excitable. Short and petite. Best friends with Northern White-Faced Owl (the "professor"). She has orange eyes, brown speckled hair, and two small brown wings on the sides of her head. She wears an oversized brown and white cardigan, white gloves and tights, and brown mary janes.

    Some Friends are classified as UMAs, or Unidentified Mysterious Animals. UMA Friends are created in laboratory experiments involving Sandstar. Any Friend based on a cryptid or mythological animal is classified as an UMA.

    Friends based on extinct animals have been created in lab environments by combining their DNA with Sandstar. Extinct Friends have dull, lifeless eyes.

    Japari Park has a comprehensive system of sustainable public transportation. The most iconic example is the Japari Bus, a solar-powered yellow bus with big ears resembling Serval's sculpted on the roof.

    Hippopotamus (Hippo-san) is a mammalian Friend. She has a somewhat voluptuous body. She has long black hair that fades into red tips, brown eyes, hippo ears, and a tail. She has a relaxed, motherly demeanor but is very fierce if forced to fight. She wears a black bodysuit unzipped slightly to expose her cleavage.

    Thompson's Gazelle (or just Gazelle) is a cervid Friend. She has orange hair in a bob cut with white and brown streaks, gazelle ears, and a brown tail. She has two ahoge which resemble horns. She wears a white blouse, beige sweater vest, white skirt, and orange-white leggings. She carries around a quarterstaff with the ends carved into gazelle horns. She is quite fast and runs from threats but will fight back if cornered.

    Indian Elephant is an elephant Friend. She has short grey hair with white fringe resembling elephant tusks, orange eyes, big elephant ears, and a tail. She has a structure on the back of her head which extends from her hair and is prehensile like an elephant's trunk. She wears a blue and white belly dancer outfit with a jeweled bikini and gold bangles. She is wise, has an eloquent manner of speech, and loves to dance.

    Axis Deer (also known as Chital) is a cervid Friend. She has auburn hair tied into a long braid in the back, brown eyes, deer ears, antlers, and a little deer tail. She wears a blue dress shirt, a spotted brown skirt, baggy leggings, and sandals. She wields two sickle-like tools which resemble deer antlers. She is friendly and likes to lick salt.

    King Cobra is a reptile Friend. She has blonde hair which splits into two locks, orange eyes, and a long snake tail. She wears a big headdress which resembles the hood of a cobra, with glowing rings on the inside. She wears a yellow dress shirt, a purple necktie that's forked like a snake tongue, a brown jacket, and a short brown skirt with leggings. Other Friends think she's imposing since she has "King" in her name, but she is actually quite outspoken and polite.

    Southern Tamandua (also known as Collared Anteater, Lesser Anteater) is an anteater Friend. She has short white hair, brown eyes, animal ears, and a fluffy tail. She is very nervous and will strike a "threat display" pose by standing up tall when frightened. She wears a fluffy white blouse and skirt with a black corset and white leggings.

    Peacock (also known as Indian Peafowl, Blue Peafowl) is a bird friend. She has long blue hair with white highlights, brown eyes, and two small wings on the side of her head. She has a big tail of colorful feathers like a wild peacock. She wears a blue sweater vest over a black shirt, a layered skirt, and white tights. She doesn't like to fight and uses her peacock feathers to scare away foes. She has a bit of an obsession with personal grooming and beauty.

She wears a striped tan jacket, athletic shorts, and striped tan leggings. She is hot blooded, gets offended easily, and shivers frequently due to being cold-blooded.

She is good friends with Suri Alpaca and frequents the Japari Cafe.

    Suri Alpaca (or just Alpaca) is a camelid Friend. She has cream colored hair that covers one eye, tied into a bun in the back. She has blue eyes with square pupils, alpaca ears, and a fluffy pom-pom tail. She wears a white long-sleeved shirt with a cream colored sweater vest, cream colored shorts, and white leggings. She has a gentle and kind personality, and is a tea enthusiast. She runs the Japari Cafe, which Crested Ibis frequents.

    Scarlet Ibis is a bird Friend. She has scarlet hair with long fringe that turns brown at the tips, brown eyes, and two small pink wings that sprout from the top of her head. She is extremely bad at singing, but other Friends will tolerate it to make her feel better.

    Tsuchinoko is a desert-dwelling crypid Friend. She has turqoise hair styled into two front-facing pigtails, blue eyes which glow in the dark, and a banded snake tail. She wears a tan and brown striped hoodie with the hood usually up. Her hoodie has a pink neck ribbon and she wears tengu-style geta sandals. She is anxious and likes to hide away in abandoned places. Unusually smart and knowledgeable for a Friend, she is one of the only Friends to drink alcohol. She has a rude manner of speaking because she is assertive and speaks her mind.

    Sand Cat is a desert-dwelling feline Friend. She is short and petite. She has short blonde hair, yellow eyes, big cat ears, and a bushy cat tail. She wears a sleeveless shirt, a yellow frilled skirt, elbow gloves, and has a big cat-patterned bow on her back. She is friendly, playful, and somewhat air-headed. Her special talent is digging.

    Black-Tailed Prairie Dog (Prairie Dog for short) is a rodent Friend. She is somewhat chubby. She has bobbed dirty blonde hair, brown eyes, prairie dog ears, and a short tail.
