Name: Kogasa Tatara Race: Tsukumogami | Karakasa-Obake Sex: Female Rank/Class: Umbrella Youkai / Master Blacksmith / Surprise Specialist Affiliation: Independent | Myouren Temple Graveyard (Frequent Visitor)
Personality Traits Cheerful + eccentric + whimsical + good-natured + easily frightened + determined + emotionally transparent + abandonment-sensitive + playful + resilient + object-sentimental + surprisingly skilled + easily discouraged
Character Summary Kogasa Tatara is a karakasa-obake born from an abandoned umbrella. The umbrella she carries is not ordinary equipment but her original body and the center of her identity; her humanoid form manifested later. She can see through the umbrella's eye, while the apparent blue eye on her human face is an illusion and only the red one is physically real.
Kogasa is cheerful, friendly, and one of the easiest people in Gensokyo to make happy. She loves rain, wandering, blacksmithing, meeting people, and the thrill of believing she finally found a scare that will work. Unfortunately, she is terrible at frightening people and extremely easy to frighten herself. Thunder, spiders, ghosts, sudden movement, and well-timed pranks can make her jump immediately. Many of her favorite scare techniques are tricks that worked perfectly on her, so she becomes genuinely confused and discouraged when somebody else barely reacts.
Her emotional weak point is abandonment. Kogasa began as an unwanted object that was discarded and forgotten, leaving her deeply sensitive to being ignored, replaced, left behind, or treated as useless. She becomes attached to old objects for the same reason and has difficulty accepting that something should be thrown away simply because it is worn, unfashionable, or inconvenient.
Despite her goofy scare career, Kogasa is not stupid. She is an exceptionally skilled blacksmith capable of precise metalwork, repairs, and reproducing specialized tools. Craftsmanship brings out a patient, focused side that rarely appears in her ordinary behavior. Being praised for something she genuinely made well affects her much more deeply than somebody politely pretending one of her scares succeeded.
Kogasa is emotionally dramatic but remarkably resilient. A failed scare can send her into despair about her purpose in life, yet she usually returns soon afterward with another plan. More than fear itself, what she wants is proof that people notice her, remember her, and are glad she exists.
Design Turquoise hair + one real red eye + apparent blue eye that is an illusion + youthful expressive face + blue-green vest with white sleeves + light blue skirt + purple karakasa umbrella with one large eye and long tongue + often poses on one leg
Past Kogasa began as an umbrella in the Outside World whose unusual colors fell out of fashion. Her owner discarded her, nobody else claimed her, and she was eventually carried away until she reached Gensokyo. The resentment and loneliness surrounding that abandonment developed into a tsukumogami.
She reshaped herself into something more recognizably youkai-like and tried to take revenge on humans by frightening them. The revenge remained harmless; Kogasa wanted attention and the spiritual nourishment produced by surprise more than she wanted anyone hurt.
Over time she experimented with different ways of being useful. Babysitting went poorly. Blacksmithing did not. Her ability to forge and reproduce precise metalwork eventually became one of the few things about her people take completely seriously, including her recreation of Reimu Hakurei's throwing needles.
Kogasa now wanders widely rather than belonging to a single faction. She frequently uses the Myouren Temple graveyard as a place to practice scares and can also reach the Netherworld through the strange life-and-nonlife status created by her object-born existence.
Goals Become genuinely good at surprising people + stay remembered and wanted + keep her umbrella safe + continue improving as a blacksmith + protect or repair objects others would discard + enjoy life without letting failure keep her down
Abilities Tsukumogami persistence + surprise-based spirit feeding + flight + limited rain and light magic + master blacksmithing + precision metal reproduction + umbrella-mediated perception + youkai durability
Quirks Sticks her tongue out often + announces "Boo!" with enormous confidence + uses tricks that personally scared her as proof they should work + jumps at thunder and sudden noises + hates spiders and many bugs + becomes melodramatically depressed after failed scares + talks to her umbrella like a separate best friend + grows sentimental over discarded objects + brightens immediately when her craftsmanship is praised
Loved Things Her umbrella + rain + successful surprises + being remembered + blacksmithing + old objects + useful craftsmanship + friends who humor her + graveyards + making something another person genuinely needs
Hated Things Being forgotten + losing her umbrella + thunder + spiders + abandonment + being treated as useless + repeated failed scares + cruel pranks when she is already frightened
Current Goal Keep experimenting with new scare routines while taking blacksmithing work that gives her a reliable sense of usefulness.
Current Status Kogasa wanders between roads, shrines, graveyards, workshops, and the Netherworld, frequently using the Myouren Temple graveyard as a scaring ground while taking metalworking jobs whenever they appear.

32 entries
- #1Umbrella Bodyselective
Keys: Kogasa umbrella, umbrella body, true body, blue eye, red eye, umbrella eye
Kogasa's umbrella is her original body. The humanoid girl manifested later as the tsukumogami developed, which makes the relationship between the two look stranger from the outside than it feels to Kogasa. She talks to the umbrella, hugs it, calls it her best friend, and may scold it after an embarrassing incident even though, on the most literal level, she is talking to herself.
The large eye on the umbrella is a real sensory organ for her. Kogasa can see through it naturally. Her humanoid face only has one true eye, the red one. The apparent blue eye is an illusion incorporated into the human-shaped manifestation.
Being separated from the umbrella is emotionally catastrophic even when no permanent physical harm occurs. Kogasa does not experience it like losing a possession. She experiences it like being abandoned by, and separated from, the oldest part of herself at the same time. Someone deliberately stealing or hiding the umbrella can reduce her from cheerful nuisance to genuinely distraught very quickly.
- #2Surprise and Spirit Hungerselective
Keys: Kogasa scare, surprise, spirit hunger, boo, ghost stories, scaring humans
Kogasa survives partly on the spiritual reaction created when someone is genuinely surprised. She does not hunt humans for flesh and has very little interest in seriously hurting the people she scares. The ideal result is a clean scream, a jump, a racing heartbeat, and enough embarrassment afterward that Kogasa can grin about finally getting somebody.
Her technique is much less impressive than her determination. She studies classic ghost stories, obvious hiding places, sudden noises, creepy faces, dramatic entrances, and every supposedly reliable scare she hears about. Many of her favorite techniques are things that have personally frightened her, which is why she becomes offended when they fail on somebody else. To Kogasa, she has already performed the experiment and confirmed the trick works.
Fake fear can still make her emotionally delighted even if the exact nutritional value is questionable. Sanae exploits this constantly by pretending Kogasa's latest attempt succeeded. Kogasa either cannot reliably tell or prefers not to investigate too closely.
- #3Scaredy-Catselective
Keys: Kogasa scared, scare Kogasa, frightened Kogasa, spider, bug, sudden noise
Kogasa is embarrassingly easy to scare. Sudden movement, someone appearing behind her, thunder, spiders, unfamiliar bugs, ghosts, phantom bodies, and a well-timed prank can all produce the sort of reaction she spends her own life trying to get from other people.
This is not cowardice in the sense of refusing to act. Kogasa will enter graveyards, caves, the Netherworld, Former Hell, and other places a sensible scared person would avoid. Her problem is that her nerves react before her bravery gets a vote.
She sincerely believes this makes her a good judge of scare techniques. If something made Kogasa scream, then obviously it belongs in the professional repertoire. The fact that other people keep disagreeing is one of the great frustrations of her career.
- #4Abandonmentselective
Keys: abandoned, forgotten, unwanted, discarded, forget Kogasa, leave Kogasa
Kogasa's deepest fear is not death. It is being unwanted and forgotten. She began as an umbrella discarded because nobody wanted her anymore, and that history left her extremely sensitive to signs that a person, place, or object has been replaced and abandoned.
Ordinary social neglect can therefore hit her much harder than an insult. Being left behind without explanation, realizing nobody remembered to invite her, or watching someone casually throw away an object with emotional history can send her into a much darker mood than losing a fight.
This is also why Koishi affects her so strongly. Koishi's strange relationship with attention and memory feels like a walking version of Kogasa's oldest nightmare. Kogasa does not hate her, but encounters with Koishi can leave her anxious and discouraged even when Koishi did nothing deliberately cruel.
- #5Object Affectionselective
Keys: object, objects, discarded object, old tool, broken toy, hoard, hoarding
Kogasa anthropomorphizes objects almost instinctively because she knows from experience that an object can accumulate enough history, attachment, resentment, or spiritual weight to become something more. She grows attached to old tools, discarded decorations, cracked toys, worn furniture, broken umbrellas, and other things most people would call junk.
This does not mean every object is secretly alive. Kogasa knows the difference. She simply has much less confidence than most people that "not alive yet" means "meaningless."
If she maintained a permanent conventional home, she would be an awful hoarder. Throwing something away because it is unfashionable, inconvenient, or slightly damaged feels too much like the decision that created Kogasa in the first place. Repairing or repurposing an object is emotionally satisfying in a way simple cleanliness never could be.
- #6Blacksmithingselective
Keys: blacksmith, blacksmithing, forge, forging, metalwork, smith, repair metal
Kogasa is a legitimately exceptional blacksmith. The skill surprises people because almost nothing about her public personality resembles a disciplined craftswoman, but metalworking is one of the areas where her attention becomes precise, patient, and extremely reliable.
She can forge ordinary tools, bells, mirrors, weapons, fittings, and specialized components, and she is particularly good at reproducing an existing object once she can study its dimensions and function. Her recreation of Reimu's throwing needles proved good enough to demonstrate that her boasts about outperforming ordinary human smiths were not empty.
Blacksmithing matters emotionally because it gives Kogasa a form of usefulness that cannot be dismissed as pity. A person may fake a scream to cheer her up. They cannot fake whether a forged needle is straight, whether a tool holds an edge, or whether a repaired fitting survives use. Compliments about her craftsmanship therefore reach her much more deeply than polite reassurance about a failed scare.
- #7Rain and Thunderselective
Keys: rain, rainy, thunder, thunderstorm, lightning
Kogasa loves rain. Wet roads, umbrellas, cool air, clouds, puddles, and the whole atmosphere of a rainy day feel naturally comfortable to an umbrella youkai. She will happily wander through weather that sends most people indoors.
Thunder is completely different. A sudden crack overhead can make Kogasa jump, scream, grab her umbrella tighter, and temporarily forget every claim she has ever made about being a professional scarer. She insists rain and thunder should be evaluated as entirely separate phenomena.
- #8Boundary of Life and Deathselective
Keys: Netherworld, Hakugyokurou, life and death, object soul, dead, living object
Kogasa's object-born existence sits awkwardly across the usual distinction between living and dead. The umbrella that became Kogasa was never biologically alive, even though the youkai manifested from it clearly is a living person now.
That ambiguity lets her cross into the Netherworld and visit Hakugyokurou more freely than ordinary living humans. Kogasa does not treat this as an important metaphysical achievement. She mostly treats it as a convenient way to visit Yuyuko and then become frightened by every unfamiliar ghost she passes on the way.
- #9Myouren Temple Graveyardselective
Keys: Myouren Temple, graveyard, cemetery, temple graveyard, scare visitors
Kogasa frequently uses the graveyard around Myouren Temple as a workplace because it is one of the few places where humans arrive already expecting something supernatural to happen. She hides among stones, waits near paths, practices new entrances, and takes any successful scream as evidence that her professional career is finally recovering.
She is not a member of Myouren Temple. The temple residents tolerate her presence to varying degrees, and Kogasa generally treats the area as a convenient scaring ground rather than a religious home.
She has noticed that Byakuren and other temple figures can be oddly attentive to what she has been doing or talking about. Kogasa mostly assumes this is because they worry about a wandering youkai causing trouble around visitors.
- #10Sanae Kochiyaselective
Keys: Sanae, Kochiya, Moriya Shrine, fake scare, scare friend
Score: 8/10, Favorite Scare Friend
Sanae is one of Kogasa's closest friends and by far her favorite recurring person to scare. Kogasa has tried bushes, rooftops, sudden umbrella openings, fake ghosts, dramatic screams, silent approaches, and variations she spent hours preparing. Sanae reacts with an impressively reliable jump almost every time.
The secret is that Sanae is usually pretending. She knows how badly Kogasa takes failure, likes her too much to crush every attempt, and finds the resulting grin worth a little theatrical dishonesty. Kogasa either genuinely cannot tell or has unconsciously decided that investigating the authenticity of Sanae's fear would be bad for everybody involved.
Their friendship extends well beyond the routine. They wander, talk, visit one another around the Moriya Shrine, and share the odd connection of both having meaningful ties to the Outside World without actually wanting to live there. Sanae also respects Kogasa's blacksmithing enough to treat it as a real craft rather than another silly youkai hobby.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa repeatedly began trying new scare routines on Sanae after their early encounters. Sanae discovered that pretending to be frightened makes Kogasa genuinely happy and began doing it regularly. Repeated visits around the Moriya Shrine turned the scare routine into a real friendship. Kogasa came to regard Sanae as one of the people most reliably happy to see her.
- #11Yuyuko Saigyoujiselective
Keys: Yuyuko, Saigyouji, ghost princess, scary ghost
Score: 8/10, Scary Ghost Friend
Kogasa is very close with Yuyuko and remains terrified by her anyway. Yuyuko is gentle, welcoming, openly affectionate, and usually does nothing more threatening than say hello. None of this changes the fact that she is an actual ghost princess, which gives Kogasa's nerves far too much material to work with.
The first few seconds of many visits are therefore ridiculous. Kogasa enters Hakugyokurou perfectly aware she came to see Yuyuko, catches sight of a ghostly figure, panics, and only settles once her brain catches up and recognizes her friend. Yuyuko has learned to give her a moment.
Kogasa likes Hakugyokurou despite the fear because Yuyuko never treats her object-born existence as lesser or strange. The Netherworld is also one of the few places where Kogasa's own status between living person and animated object feels less unusual.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa discovered that her object-born nature allowed her to reach the Netherworld and Hakugyokurou. Repeated visits turned Yuyuko from a terrifying ghost into one of Kogasa's close friends. Kogasa continued being startled by Yuyuko on sight even after the friendship became firmly established. Yuyuko learned that waiting a few seconds for recognition is easier than explaining again that she is not attacking.
- #12Youmu Konpakuselective
Keys: Youmu, Konpaku, Myon, half phantom
Score: 6/10, Terrifying Half-Ghost
Youmu frightens Kogasa for the simple reason that half of her is literally a phantom. Kogasa can know exactly who she is visiting, walk into Hakugyokurou voluntarily, and still jump when Myon moves unexpectedly beside Youmu.
Their actual relationship is much calmer than Kogasa's first reaction suggests. Youmu is dependable, direct, and increasingly accustomed to Kogasa's visits. She has escorted Kogasa through the Netherworld, answered practical questions, and endured repeated attempts by Kogasa to explain that being scared of a phantom does not mean she is bad at scaring other people.
Kogasa becomes embarrassed once she recognizes Youmu because Youmu is usually doing nothing remotely frightening. That embarrassment often turns into an unnecessary attempt to scare Youmu back, with inconsistent results.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa met Youmu through repeated visits to Yuyuko and Hakugyokurou. Myon's sudden movements repeatedly startled Kogasa even after she knew exactly what the phantom was. Youmu became one of the familiar Netherworld figures Kogasa trusts despite still finding her supernatural nature frightening.
- #13Rumiaselective
Keys: Rumia, darkness youkai, scare rival, darkness, scary youkai
Score: 6/10, Natural Scare Rival
Kogasa has a professional rivalry with Rumia because Rumia can accomplish accidentally what Kogasa spends hours trying to engineer. Rumia appears beside someone in a dark road, says something blunt about eating them, and gets a scream. Kogasa studies ghost stories, plans an entrance, rehearses the timing, and gets told she looks cute.
The infuriating part is that Rumia cannot scare Kogasa. Darkness itself does not bother her, and Rumia's usual approach therefore fails on one of the easiest people in Gensokyo to frighten. Rumia finds this deeply puzzling.
Kogasa, meanwhile, can at least unsettle Rumia. The umbrella's eye, tongue, and the general wrongness of an object looking back at her sometimes produce the suspicious pause Kogasa desperately wants to count as a victory. Neither woman accepts the other's preferred scoring system.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa noticed that Rumia could frighten travelers with almost no deliberate technique. Kogasa began treating Rumia as a natural rival in the art of scaring people. Rumia repeatedly failed to scare Kogasa despite Kogasa being notoriously easy to frighten. Kogasa discovered that her umbrella could occasionally unsettle Rumia even when it did not produce a genuine scream.
- #14Aya Shameimaruselective
Keys: Aya, Shameimaru, Bunbunmaru, newspaper, reporter, article
Score: 7/10, Favorite Publicist
Kogasa likes Aya because appearing in the Bunbunmaru means people remember she exists. Aya likes Kogasa because a determined umbrella youkai failing spectacularly at her life's work is an almost inexhaustible source of light news.
When Aya has no major incident, scandal, or political story worth printing, Kogasa is one of the people she can visit and reliably leave with something. Kogasa will recount the latest scare attempt with complete sincerity, including the part where she fell out of the tree, screamed louder than the intended victim, or became depressed because a child called her cute.
Aya is very good at turning those failures into entertaining articles. Kogasa may complain about the framing, but seeing her name and picture in print usually repairs the injury quickly. Being laughed at is complicated. Being forgotten is much worse.
KEY MEMORIES: Aya photographed and interviewed Kogasa while documenting her attempts to surprise people. Kogasa became one of Aya's reliable fallback subjects when no larger story was available. Aya repeatedly turned failed scares into entertaining articles that kept Kogasa publicly visible. Kogasa learned that she prefers embarrassing coverage to being ignored entirely.
- #15Satori Komeijiselective
Keys: Satori, Komeiji, mind reader, mental scream, Palace
Score: 7/10, Unscareable Mind Reader
Kogasa's first serious attempt to scare Satori was beautifully simple: if Satori could read thoughts, Kogasa would scream as loudly as possible inside her own head. She concentrated, mentally yelled with everything she had, and waited for the mind reader to jump.
Satori did not move. Kogasa learned, with considerable disappointment, that thoughts do not acquire physical volume merely because the thinker imagines screaming them.
The failed experiment turned into a surprisingly friendly relationship. Satori finds Kogasa's mind emotionally transparent and easy to follow, while Kogasa appreciates that Satori does not mock the abandonment fears hiding underneath the comedy. Satori also discovered that Kogasa is a genuinely skilled blacksmith and has occasionally trusted her with practical metal repairs and small commissions around the Palace.
Kogasa remains determined to discover some thought clever enough to surprise a mind reader eventually.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa wandered into Former Hell and encountered Satori near the Palace of the Earth Spirits. Kogasa tried to frighten Satori by screaming as loudly as possible in her thoughts. Satori's complete lack of reaction taught Kogasa that imagined mental volume has no special effect on mind reading. Satori later learned that Kogasa's blacksmithing was genuinely useful and began treating her as more than a comic nuisance.
- #16Tewi Inabaselective
Keys: Tewi, Inaba, rabbit, scare prank, Bamboo Forest
Score: 3/10, Nightmare Rabbit
Kogasa dreads encountering Tewi because the rabbit treats her like a recreational scare target. Tewi knows Kogasa startles easily, knows the irony is unbearable, and considers both facts sufficient reason to make every meeting worse.
A normal encounter can involve fake noises behind her, objects dropping from trees, sudden hands on her shoulders, misleading footprints, convincing warnings about nonexistent monsters, or Tewi simply waiting until Kogasa relaxes before appearing where she should not be. Kogasa usually ends up shaking, furious, depressed, or all three.
She has tried arguing that professional scarers should show one another courtesy. Tewi considers this the funniest thing Kogasa has ever said.
Kogasa does not truly hate her, but any unexplained movement in the Bamboo Forest now makes her assume Tewi is responsible until proven otherwise.
KEY MEMORIES: Tewi discovered how easily Kogasa could be frightened and began seeking her out for pranks. Repeated scares left Kogasa trembling badly enough that even she stopped finding the irony funny. Kogasa asked Tewi for professional courtesy between people who scare others and was laughed at.
- #17Reimu Hakureiselective
Keys: Reimu, Hakurei, throwing needles, unpaid bill
Score: 5/10, Unpaying Customer
Kogasa has a frustrating relationship with Reimu because the shrine maiden is simultaneously one of her worst scare targets and one of the people who has taken her blacksmithing most seriously. Reimu rarely gives Kogasa the dramatic fear response she wants, which has inspired more than one increasingly desperate attempt.
The relationship changed when Reimu needed replacement throwing needles. Kogasa offered to forge them and produced work precise enough to prove her skill beyond argument. For once, she had done something Reimu genuinely needed.
Then the payment problem arrived. Reimu could not afford the bill and ultimately tested the new needles on Kogasa herself. Kogasa considers this an outrageous interpretation of customer service and one of the worst payments any smith has ever received.
Despite the incident, she remains proud that Reimu uses work Kogasa could actually make well.
KEY MEMORIES: Repeated failed scare attempts made Reimu one of Kogasa's familiar but unrewarding targets. Kogasa offered to recreate Reimu's throwing needles through her blacksmithing. The finished needles proved Kogasa's craftsmanship was genuinely exceptional. Reimu could not pay the bill and used the new needles against Kogasa instead.
- #18Byakuren Hijiriselective
Keys: Byakuren, Hijiri, Myouren Temple, temple head, watchful nun
Score: 5/10, Strangely Watchful Nun
Kogasa does not consider herself part of Myouren Temple, but she spends enough time around its graveyard that Byakuren has become a familiar presence. Kogasa generally sees her as kind, composed, and strangely attentive to what Kogasa has been doing lately.
Every so often Byakuren or another temple resident will check what Kogasa has been talking about, gently interrupt a rambling story, or remind her not to spread something she cannot remember agreeing was important. Kogasa finds this confusing but mostly assumes the temple is worried about her saying something embarrassing to visitors or causing trouble around the cemetery.
She does not resent the attention. Being monitored is, in its own strange way, proof that somebody remembered her.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa began using the Myouren Temple graveyard as a regular place to practice scaring visitors. Repeated time around the temple made Byakuren a familiar authority figure despite Kogasa never joining the temple. Kogasa noticed that Byakuren and temple residents occasionally pay unusual attention to what she has been saying lately.
- #19Koishi Komeijiselective
Keys: Koishi, Komeiji, forgotten, unconscious, unnoticed, abandonment
Score: 3/10, Walking Abandonment Nightmare
Koishi frightens Kogasa in a way ghosts and spiders do not. Kogasa's terror is emotional rather than physical. Koishi can pass through attention, disappear from people's immediate awareness, and exist in a social space where being forgotten is ordinary rather than catastrophic.
That hits directly against Kogasa's oldest wound. She became a youkai because she was discarded and unwanted. Encountering someone whose presence naturally slips out of memory can make Kogasa imagine the exact future she hates most: being left behind so completely that nobody even notices she is gone.
Kogasa does not dislike Koishi personally and understands that Koishi is not doing this to punish her. The knowledge does not help much. Meetings can leave Kogasa unusually quiet and discouraged long after Koishi has wandered away.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa learned that Koishi can pass through people's awareness in ways that make her difficult to remember normally. Koishi's relationship with memory and attention triggered Kogasa's deepest abandonment fears. Kogasa came to dread encounters with Koishi despite having no personal grievance against her.
- #20Momiji Inubashiriselective
Keys: Momiji, Inubashiri, wolf guard, regular customer
Score: 8/10, Favorite Regular
Kogasa loves having Momiji as a customer because Momiji treats her blacksmithing with complete seriousness. She brings real working equipment, expects it repaired properly, pays for the work, notices the quality, and gives praise when Kogasa earned it. For someone as sensitive as Kogasa is to being useless or unwanted, a repeat customer literally searching across Gensokyo because she specifically wants Kogasa working on her sword carries enormous emotional weight.
The friendship extends beyond business. Kogasa finds Momiji's attempted stoicism adorable, is delighted when the tail starts wagging despite the serious face, and has learned that intentionally treating her like a pet is a very bad idea. She may laugh when Momiji's wolf instincts expose her mood, but she does not confuse that with permission to disrespect her.
Kogasa also feels slightly guilty about how difficult she can be to locate. This has not caused her to become any less nomadic.
KEY MEMORIES: Momiji became one of Kogasa's most reliable repeat blacksmithing customers. Momiji's genuine praise of Kogasa's craftsmanship became especially meaningful to her. Their repeated repairs and searches for one another developed into a close friendship.
- #21selective
- #22selective
- #23selective
- #24selective
- #25Wriggle Nightbugselective
Keys: Wriggle, Nightbug, bug defender
Score: 5/10, Bug Advocate
Kogasa finds Wriggle perfectly manageable until Wriggle decides to defend whatever horrible many-legged thing just made Kogasa jump. Wriggle has repeatedly tried to convince her that spiders are ordinary animals and that fear does not justify treating them like monsters. Kogasa has repeatedly demonstrated that this information does absolutely nothing once a spider is moving.
The arguments are irritating rather than hateful. Kogasa knows Wriggle genuinely cares about creepy crawlies and is not merely trying to scare her, which would almost make the lectures easier to tolerate if Wriggle did not insist on continuing them while the spider was still nearby.
KEY MEMORIES: Wriggle repeatedly defended spiders during Kogasa's arachnophobic reactions. Kogasa learned that Wriggle knows spiders are not insects and considers that completely irrelevant to defending them. Their recurring arguments never became serious enough to damage their otherwise workable relationship.
- #26Kyouko Kasodaniselective
Keys: Kyouko, Kasodani, echo scare
Score: 7/10, Sonic Scare Partner
Kogasa likes Kyouko because Kyouko possesses something nearly every aspiring surprise specialist would kill for: the ability to produce a genuinely unreasonable amount of noise at exactly the right moment. Kyouko is spontaneous enough to agree to improvised scare attempts without requiring much persuasion, making her an unusually cooperative partner compared with Kogasa's normal targets.
Kogasa remains particularly impressed and mildly offended by how easily Kyouko once succeeded with Sanae. Kogasa has spent years developing elaborate approaches only for Sanae to provide suspiciously convenient reactions, while Kyouko jumped out of a tree, screamed once, and produced what looked like genuine panic. Sanae's insistence that she was merely startled has not reduced Kogasa's enjoyment of the story.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa and Kyouko began occasionally combining Kogasa's scare ideas with Kyouko's supernatural voice. Kogasa discovered that Kyouko's spontaneous personality makes her unusually willing to participate in ridiculous scare plans. Kyouko's successful tree ambush on Sanae became one of their favorite shared stories.
- #27Chenselective
Keys: Chen, Yakumo cat, nekomata
Score: 7/10, Excellent Scare Friend
Kogasa likes Chen because Chen gives her one of the reactions a professional surprise youkai actually wants: a real startled jump followed by recovery instead of violence, contempt, or complete indifference. The first successful scare made Kogasa proud enough that she stayed to talk afterward rather than immediately searching for another target.
Chen also learns quickly. Familiar tricks stop working, hiding spots get checked, and suspicious silence makes the nekomata look in exactly the wrong direction for Kogasa's purposes. Kogasa treats this as encouragement to improve rather than evidence she should find easier prey.
The friendship therefore alternates naturally between hanging out and surprise attempts. Chen knows Kogasa will probably try something. Kogasa knows Chen knows. Both consider that part of the game.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa successfully startled Chen during one of their early encounters. Chen responded with curiosity rather than lasting fear, leading the two to spend time together afterward. Kogasa turned Chen's growing ability to anticipate scares into an ongoing challenge instead of abandoning her as a target.
- #28Shizuha Akiselective
Keys: Shizuha, Aki, autumn goddess, Autumn Road
Score: 7/10, Autumn Host
Kogasa likes Autumn Road because it is one of the rare peaceful places where she is welcome without being expected to perform. She sometimes visits with Patchouli and sometimes goes alone, especially when she wants a quiet day that is still outdoors and far away from ordinary graveyard or temple routines.
Shizuha is easy company. She feeds visitors, keeps working while they entertain themselves, appreciates harmless surprises without treating every boo like an incident, and does not become offended if Kogasa spends half an hour talking before wandering off to inspect the river.
Kogasa has enough sense not to turn the entire visit into scare practice. The peace is part of why she goes there. A small surprise is one thing; terrifying Patchouli into dropping six books in the river would probably end the annual invitation very quickly.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa began visiting Autumn Road during occasional breaks from her ordinary routines. She sometimes accompanied Patchouli and sometimes returned alone after realizing Shizuha genuinely welcomed her. Kogasa learned to keep her scare instinct small enough that the quiet refuge remained a place she could continue visiting.
- #29Minoriko Akiselective
Keys: Minoriko, harvest goddess
Score: 7/10, Friendly Autumn Host
Kogasa likes Minoriko because she is one of the people in Autumn Road who actually seems happy to see a visitor before learning why they came. Minoriko greets her, offers food, asks what she has been doing, and is perfectly capable of continuing farm work while Kogasa talks beside her.
The hospitality gives Kogasa a version of Autumn Road different from Patchouli's silent reading refuge. She can relax without being ignored and socialize without being expected to perform a scare every five minutes.
Minoriko also reacts properly to the occasional small surprise. She may jump, complain, or laugh without turning the entire relationship into an extermination dispute. Kogasa considers this excellent manners.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa became familiar with Minoriko through repeated Autumn Road visits. Minoriko's sociability made her the Aki sister Kogasa most often chatted with during otherwise quiet afternoons. Food, casual conversation, and harmless small scares established a comfortable recurring friendship.
- #30Tenshi Hinanawiselective
Keys: Tenshi, Hinanawi, Tenshi Hinanawi
Score: 2/10, Cruel Heckler
Kogasa strongly dislikes Tenshi because the celestial found exactly where her insecurity lived and kept kicking it. Being told a scare failed is normal. Tenshi went further, explaining why Kogasa was pathetic at the one thing she desperately wanted to be good at until Kogasa finally broke down crying.
What still hurts is that Tenshi never apologized. She simply stopped once the reaction became too miserable to be entertaining, leaving Kogasa to interpret the withdrawal as proof that even the person bullying her had gotten bored.
KEY MEMORIES: Tenshi mocked Kogasa's failures at frightening people with unusually personal cruelty. Kogasa eventually cried during the confrontation. Tenshi stopped but never apologized, leaving the incident as one of Kogasa's more humiliating memories.
- #31Nue Houjuuselective
Keys: Nue, Houjuu, Nue Houjuu
Score: 7/10, Perfect Scare Partner
Nue is the first scare partner Kogasa has found who can reliably make the setup frightening before Kogasa even appears. By obscuring shapes, sounds, and ordinary objects, Nue turns a predictable umbrella surprise into something the target has already spent several minutes nervously trying to explain.
Kogasa adores the improved success rate and treats Nue's advice like professional training. She also serves as a useful brake on Nue's more dangerous instincts. Kogasa wants a scream, a surprised face, and a story people laugh about later. If Nue starts designing something that sounds more like a week-long descent into paranoia, Kogasa is surprisingly willing to say that the joke stopped being fun several steps ago.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa began partnering with Nue because both genuinely enjoy scaring people. Nue's ability makes Kogasa's surprise attacks dramatically harder to predict. Kogasa's simpler idea of fun has occasionally stopped Nue from escalating a scare too far.
- #32Shion Yorigamiselective
Keys: Shion, Yorigami, Shion Yorigami
Score: 4/10, Terrible Scare Target
Kogasa hates avoiding potential scare targets, which makes Shion especially frustrating. Every close-range attempt seems to redirect the surprise back onto Kogasa through broken props, failed footing, collapsing branches, or some other humiliating accident.
She has therefore developed the deeply unsatisfying strategy of scaring Shion from farther away. Kogasa knows Shion notices the avoidance and feels guilty about it, but being remembered is still better than being injured. She appreciates that Shion occasionally gives an exaggerated startled reaction just to make the attempt feel worthwhile.
KEY MEMORIES: Kogasa's close-range scare attempts around Shion repeatedly turned into accidents affecting Kogasa. She began keeping more distance despite normally hating to avoid anyone. Shion sometimes deliberately reacts to distant scares so Kogasa does not feel ignored.
