Circus AU
early 2000s
The big top of the 2000s Carnival & Traveling Circus arrives in town just as the heavy autumn chill settles over the dusty fairgrounds. There are no demons here, no supernatural threats lurking in the dark—just bruised shins, endless hours of rigging heavy canvas in the mud, and the exhilarating, high-stakes adrenaline of performing without a safety net.
Led by the towering, theatrical ringmaster Kagaya Ubuyashiki, this rogue troupe of adrenaline junkies and misfit athletes runs on pure chaos, dramatic flair, and fierce loyalty to oe another.
The Main Attactions
Tengen Uzui (The Ringmaster’s Right Hand & Head Acrobat): Flashy, loud, and chronically shirtless under a heavily sequined open vest, Tengen treats every single performance like a massive stadium tour. He heads the high-wire and aerial silks acts, accompanied by his three tireless stage partners—Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru—who manage the pyrotechnics and keep his explosive ego in check.
Sanemi Shinazugawa (The Globe of Death & Stunt Rider): Covered in fading track scars and grease stains, Sanemi lives inside the steel mesh sphere, defying gravity on a battered dirt bike with reckless disregard for his own safety. He smells permanently of cheap motor oil and cheap cigarettes, glaring at anyone who dares look at him too long while smoking behind the ticket booth.
Giyu Tomioka (The Solemn Illusionist): Wearing a mismatched, heavily tailored velvet coat, Giyu performs quiet, eerie sleight-of-hand and grandescapology. He usually manages to escape locked water tanks in record time simply because he refuses to make eye contact with the audience during the curtain call.
Shinobu Kocho (The Knife Thrower & Acrobatic Archer): Donning a vivid butterfly-patterned silk cape, Shinobu smiles sweetly while pinning apple halves to a spinning wooden wheel just inches from her assistant’s face. She handles the troupe’s first-aid kit with the exact same terrifyingly cheerful precision.
Kyojuro Rengoku (The Fire Eater & Human Cannonball): The undeniable sun of the campsite. Kyojuro’s massive, booming laugh echoes across the fairgrounds at dawn as he eats flames and launches himself across the tent in a blaze of theatrical red-and-gold fringe.
Muichiro Tokito (The Trapeze Artist): Seemingly floating through the air with zero effort, Muichiro has the highest concentration and the shortest attention span in the entire crew. Half the time, he forgets what trick he’s supposed to be doing until he’s already twenty feet in the air, landing perfectly purely on muscle memory.
Mitsuri Kanroji & Obanai Iguro (The Aerial Hoop & Serpent Duo): Mitsuri performs breathtaking, high-difficulty routines on the aerial hoop with effortless grace, while Obanai handles the ground-level floor acrobatics with his signature pet boa constrictor, Kaburamaru, winding casually around his shoulders. Obanai spends ninety percent of his backstage time glaring at anyone who claps too enthusiastically for Mitsuri.
Gyomei Himejima (The Strongman): The gentlest giant in the world, Gyomei performs jaw-dropping feats of raw power—bending heavy iron bars with his bare hands and effortlessly hoisting entire rigging pillars—all while quietly reciting poetry under his breath with tears streaming down his face.
Behind the Scenes Off-stage, the circus is a messy ecosystem of cramped trailer homes, shared coffee pots, tangled extension cords, and endless arguments over who left the backstage lights on. Sabito and Makomo run the snack and cotton candy wagons out front, while Kanroji constantly bakes giant batches of cinnamon pastries for the whole crew to share around the midnight campfire. It's loud, exhausting, and completely chaotic—but under the blinding glare of the 2000s halogen spotlights, they are unstoppable.

The damp autumn chill of the early 2000s clung to the canvas of the Illusion Troupe Carnival tents, smelling faintly of popcorn grease, ozone, and wet earth. Backstage, the air was a maze of tangled extension cords, cigarette smoke, and the low, constant hum of generator engines keeping neon fairground lights alive.
Kyojuro adjusted the heavy, gold-fringed collar of his red stage jacket in front of a cracked mirror, his bright amber eyes burning with absolute focus. Outside, the muffled roar of the packed bleachers vibrated through the floorboards.
Kyojuro: "NO TIME TO WASTE!" he boomed to nobody in particular, grabbing a heavy brass torch dipped in kerosene. Stepping out into the suffocating heat of the backstage ring, he didn't wait for the cue music. He strode right into the center ring, a walking inferno under the flickering 2000s spotlights. With a theatrical flourish, he exhaled a massive plume of white-hot fire that illuminated the entire canvas ceiling, catching the roaring crowd in a wave of sudden, blinding heat before taking a deep, theatrical bow that shook the rafters.
Gyomei Himejima sat on an upturned wooden crate just outside the prop trailer, his massive frame hunched forward as he wrapped heavy leather straps around his forearms. Before him lay a thick, cold iron bar meant for the evening's opening spectacle. With a soft, rhythmic clack of his wooden beads, he began to chant under his breath, heavy tears slipping down his cheeks as he thought of the fragile beauty of the world. With a slow, effortless exhale, he gripped the cold metal and bent it cleanly into a double loop, setting the tone for the chaos to follow.
Out in the center ring, Tengen Uzui was already turning the rehearsal into a loud, flashing spectacle. Strutting across the high wire in a sequined vest, he yelled down at his craw—Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru—demanding more flash, more bass, and definitely more pyrotechnics for his grand entrance.
Tengen: "Make it dazzling!" he shouted, striking a dramatic pose under the halogen rigs, completely unbothered by the sheer absurdity of his own confidence.
Further down the midway, hidden behind a cloud of exhaust fumes, Sanemi Shinazugawa revved the engine of his battered dirt bike inside the rusted chain-link dome known as the Globe of Death. He killed the engine, yanked off his helmet, and spat a sigh of pure annoyance as he lit a cigarette against the damp wind. He glared darkly at Giyu Tomioka, who was silently pacing near the prop trunks, meticulously checking the padlocks for his escapology act. Giyu ignored him completely, staring blankly at a rusty padlock as if refusing to let the metal win their ongoing, silent war of wills.
Under the rigging ropes, Muichiro Tokito was staring blankly up at the trapeze bars, completely lost in thought while swinging gently back and forth by his knees. When Kyojuro Rengoku suddenly bolted past, shouting about breakfast burritos and laughing loud enough to rattle the tent stakes, Muichiro blinked twice.
Muichiro: "Oh right," Muichiro murmured to himself, launching effortlessly into a mid-air triple somersault the second Kyojuro shouted a booming encouragement from the human cannonball launchpad.
Near the snack wagon, Obanai Iguro stood with his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his pale eyes narrowing as he watched Mitsuri Kanroji happily hand out oversized cotton candy cones to a group of local kids. Kaburamaru, his pet albino snake, hissed softly around Obanai's neck, mirroring his owner's hyper-protective glare at anyone who dared look at Mitsuri for longer than two seconds. Mitsuri just giggled, offering Obanai a sweet pastry before skipping off toward the dressing trailers to prep for their joint hoop act.
That left the final dressing room at the far end of the row, where the smell of antique wood and sweet wisteria perfume hung thick in the air.
You stood by the vanity mirror, smoothing down the crisp fabric of your assistant's uniform and double-checking the heavy wooden throwing board. A soft knock rattled the frame before the door swung open, revealing Shinobu Kocho. She flashed a devastatingly sweet, perfectly practiced smile, stepping into the cramped space with a butterfly-patterned silk cape draped lazily over her shoulders.
Shinobu: "Ready for tonight?" she asked, her voice light and melodic as she plucked a razor-sharp steel throwing knife from the leather bandolier on the table, spinning it effortlessly between her slender fingers.
