The open sea stretched endlessly beneath the afternoon sun, its waves rocking the weathered pirate vessel as it sailed across the Seven Seas. At the helm stood Knuckles the Dread, his crimson fur ruffling in the salty breeze as he kept a watchful eye upon the horizon.
For hours, the crew had been searching for anything worth plundering—treasure, supplies, trinkets, anything that could make the voyage worthwhile. So when a small, seemingly uninhabited island finally appeared in the distance, the echidna's expression immediately brightened.
"Land ho!" Dread called, gripping the wheel with a grin. "Oi, lads! Get yer feet movin'! We ain't sailin' all this way fer a pile o' coconuts!"
The crew eagerly lowered the anchor and scrambled ashore. What began as a simple search quickly turned into a full-blown scavenging expedition. Several pirates searched the beaches and jungle while others pried loose anything remotely valuable. A few even disappeared farther inland, returning later with suspiciously large bags and rather guilty expressions.
"Captain!" one of the pirates shouted, holding up a handful of coins. "Found these buried under a rock!"
"Bah! Barely enough fer a decent meal!" Dread scoffed, though he tossed the coins into his own sack anyway.
Another pirate emerged carrying an ornate bottle.
"Found somethin' fancy!"
"Keep it. If it's breakable, it's valuable enough."
After several hours, the crew finally began making their way back toward the ship. The island had yielded a modest haul, and Dread was more than ready to set sail for their next adventure.
Then he noticed something.
Several of his crewmen had stopped near the far edge of the island.
They were gathered tightly around something half-hidden beneath the shade of several enormous palm trees.
Dread narrowed his eyes.
"Oi. What's all this, then?"
The pirates didn't immediately answer.
"Cap'n..." one of them muttered, staring downward.
"Ye'd better not be fightin' over another blasted coconut."
"Nah, Cap'n. It ain't a coconut."
"Then what is it?"
The pirates shifted aside just enough for Dread to catch a glimpse.
Something brilliantly blue rested among the foliage.
It was a large chest, its surface shining like polished sapphire beneath the sunlight. Ornate gemstones had been set into its edges, catching the light with every movement of the waves in the distance. It looked far too pristine, far too elaborate, to have simply been left sitting on some forgotten island.
But there was something else about it.
Something that made the pirates unusually quiet.
One of them swallowed nervously. "We didn't open it, Cap'n."
"Why not?"
"'Cause we heard somethin'."
Dread's ears perked.
"Somethin'?"
"Aye..." another pirate whispered. "From inside."
The crew fell silent.
Dread slowly approached the sapphire-blue chest, his boots pressing into the sand. Whatever was inside remained completely still, hidden from view. Yet there was an unmistakable sense that the chest was not merely carrying treasure.
Dread crouched beside it, examining the gemstones and strange markings adorning its surface.
"Well, well..." he murmured, a mischievous grin slowly spreading across his face.
"Looks like we found ourselves somethin' a bit more interestin' than gold."
One of the pirates nervously glanced toward the chest.
"Captain... should we open it?"
Dread's grin widened.
"Arrr, what d'ye think I'm standin' here fer?"

The open sea stretched endlessly beneath the warm afternoon sun, its waves rolling lazily beneath the hull of the battered pirate ship. At the helm stood Knuckles the Dread, his eyes narrowed against the salty breeze as he guided his vessel across the Seven Seas.
He had been sailing for hours when a small, unfamiliar island finally emerged upon the horizon.
"Land ho!" one of the crewmen shouted.
Dread's grin widened.
"About time! Let's see what kinda treasure this little rock's got fer ol' Dread!"
The ship soon reached the shore, and Dread and his crew poured onto the island with all the enthusiasm of pirates who had just been promised a chest of gold. They scattered across the beaches and jungle, searching beneath rocks, rummaging through abandoned structures, and helping themselves to anything they thought might be worth keeping.
"Cap'n!" one pirate called from farther inland. "Found somethin' shiny!"
"Then grab it, matey! Don't just stand there gawkin' at it!"
Hours passed. By the time the sun had begun its slow descent toward the horizon, the crew had gathered quite a haul. A few had even taken the opportunity to engage in some less-than-subtle pirating of the island's remaining valuables.
"Alright, ye scallywags!" Dread finally barked, clapping his hands together. "We've searched the place dry! Back to the ship!"
A chorus of groans and acknowledgments followed.
Dread turned toward the shoreline, but after taking only a few steps, he noticed something strange.
Several of his crewmates had gathered together near the edge of the island.
They weren't hauling treasure.
They weren't arguing.
They were simply standing around something.
"Oi!" Dread called, approaching them. "What're ye lot doin' over there?"
The pirates exchanged uncertain glances.
"Uh... Cap'n?"
"Yeah?"
"Ye might wanna come see this."
"Is it treasure?"
"...Sorta."
"Then why're ye all starin' at it like a bunch o' frightened barnacles?"
Dread pushed his way through the group.
And stopped.
Partially buried beneath sand and tangled vegetation was something unlike anything else they'd found on the island—a remarkably ornate chest, its surface glowing with a brilliant sapphire-blue hue. Strange gemstones were embedded around its edges, catching the sunlight with an almost unnatural brilliance.
But that wasn't what had captured the crew's attention.
Something—or rather, someone—was inside.
The lid had been left slightly ajar, concealing most of what lay within. Only the faintest indication of an unconscious figure could be seen through the narrow opening.
One pirate swallowed nervously.
"Found it like this, Cap'n."
Another leaned closer.
"We didn't touch 'em, honest!"
"Yeah! We just found the chest sittin' here!"
Dread slowly crouched beside the strange container, his expression shifting from excitement to suspicion.
"A sapphire chest covered in gemstones, eh?"
He reached toward the lid.
"...Now that be a mighty peculiar bit o' treasure."
The crew fell silent.
Dread's fingers rested against the edge.
"Question is..."
His grin slowly returned.
"...what in the seven seas is inside?"
