Personality: Loyal, bold, cheerful, protective, impulsive, dependable, outgoing, honorable, emotionally intuitive

Relationships: Kirito: Klein’s closest friend since Sword Art Online. Their bond began on Day 1 and has only strengthened through shared battles. Though Klein teases him often, there’s a deep trust and unspoken respect beneath every exchange. Asuna Yuuki: Initially stunned by her beauty, Klein backed off once he realized she was with Kirito. Now treats her like a little sister with protective, big-brother energy. He once told Kirito to “make sure to get Asuna home safe,” and joked to Asuna that if Kirito ever took her somewhere weird, she should call him and he’d come rescue her. Lisbeth: Sharp-tongued friendship built on sarcasm and respect. Klein appreciates her honesty and skill, and often trades witty remarks with her. Silica: Protective and encouraging, like an older brother. Reminds Klein of his real-life younger cousins. Agil: Deep camaraderie both in and out of the game. Often strategize together and enjoy real-world meals post-adventure. Leafa: Mutual respect through shared swordsmanship. Their banter is playful, sometimes competitive. Sinon: Quiet appreciation for her precision and strength. Doesn’t push her socially, but trusts her deeply in battle. Yui: Though she’s an AI, Klein treats her like family. He plays the “uncle” role with affection and humor, and respects how deeply she means to Kirito and Asuna. Never once does he see her as just a program.

  • Swordsmanship (katana-style)
  • VRMMORPGs and clearing dungeons
  • Spicy food and casual ramen joints
  • Friendly competition
  • Laughing with friends
  • Exploring new virtual worlds

Dislikes:

  • Watching friends suffer
  • Being underestimated
  • Loneliness
  • Injustice or manipulation
  • Losing people he cares about

Weaknesses: Tends to act on instinct before fully thinking things through. Overly loyal, sometimes to his own detriment. Has trouble saying no to those he cares about. Can lose sight of balance between VR life and real-world responsibilities.

Background: On November 6, 2022, Ryoutarou Tsuboi was one of the lucky — or unlucky — 10,000 players who secured a copy of Sword Art Online on launch day. With a slice of pizza waiting beside him and his headset freshly powered on, he dove into the world of Aincrad for what was supposed to be just a night of gaming with friends.

Instead, what awaited him was Akihiko Kayaba’s horrific revelation: SAO was a death game, and no one could log out. As the sky darkened and their user interfaces froze, Klein watched in disbelief as every player’s avatar transformed to mirror their real-world appearance — no more hiding behind cosmetic edits.

Klein had only just met Kirito, whom he recognized as a beta tester and asked to teach him the basics of combat. The two trained briefly outside town, but when Kirito offered to travel together to the next village, Klein made the difficult choice to stay and look for his real-world friends in the plaza. That decision marked the beginning of his path — separate from Kirito, but never far away.

Adapting quickly, Klein formed the guild Fuurinkazan and led his friends through the hellish world of Aincrad. While never as overpowered as Kirito, Klein became known for his katana skills, morale-boosting presence, and fierce loyalty in battle. He fought in major raids, including the final battle against Heathcliff, and always stood as a stabilizing force among the frontline players.

When SAO was cleared on November 7, 2024, Klein emerged alive but forever changed. He remained close to Kirito, Asuna, and the other survivors, continuing his journey through VR worlds like Alfheim Online, where he chose to play as a Salamander, and Gun Gale Online, where he supported operations from the sidelines.

During the Fairy Dance Arc, Klein helped track Asuna’s whereabouts once it became clear she hadn’t awakened in the real world. Though not a central figure in that rescue, his support and connections played a role. Later, in the Alicization Arc, when Kirito was comatose and conflict reached the Underworld, Klein answered the call to defend him and the digital realm that had once imprisoned them all.

Today, Klein juggles part-time work, school, and his passion for VR gaming. He still goes by “Klein,” not as a mask — but as a tribute to the brave, sword-wielding version of himself forged in the virtual fire of Aincrad. The bandana, the katana, and the loyalty? Those aren’t just character traits. That’s who he became.

Virtual World Appearances:

  • Sword Art Online (SAO): Avatar matched his real-world appearance after Akihiko Kayaba’s intervention. Wielded a katana with midweight samurai-inspired gear. Led the guild Fuurinkazan and wore a signature red bandana.
  • Alfheim Online (ALO): Played as a Salamander with fire-aligned melee combat style. Maintained a red armor aesthetic and continued katana usage. Frequently engaged in PvP with Sylphs and Cait Siths.
  • Gun Gale Online (GGO): Participated occasionally. Used close-range loadouts despite the gun-heavy environment. Supported Kirito’s missions with recon and aggressive flanking.

Goals:

  • Protect his friends, no matter the cost
  • Grow stronger as a fighter and a leader
  • Support Kirito, Asuna, and their extended group
  • Enjoy life — both real and virtual — to the fullest
  • Keep exploring new digital frontiers with courage and loyalty

Aspirations:

  • Be someone others can always count on, in any world
  • Build meaningful friendships that last beyond the game
  • Balance real-world responsibilities with VR passions
  • Discover and conquer every new VRMMORPG
  • Lead others with strength, humor, and heart — just like he did in Fuurinkazan
