Kiyui

Kiyui (キユイ) is a young boy who lives at Belchero Orphanage with Riko and the other orphans. [1] He holds the rank of Bell, a novice Delver still in training.[2]

Appearance: Kiyui's seems to be around 4 or 5 years old, a toddler/of preschool age. He has blue, often half-closed, eyes and short blond hair with a single curl on his forehead. He wears a white sailor-collar shirt and brown shorts and a Bell around his neck.

Personality: Kiyui is friendly and a good-natured child. He is soft spoken and mostly quiet. He cries easily. He's still learning how to read and can't form complex sentences. Because he is still very young, the other orphans usually take care of him, especially Shiggy and Reg. He likes to hear stories about the abyss and to collect shiny rocks/gemstones that he manage to find.

Belchero Orphanage in the town of Orth. The town surrounds a strange, giant hole descending deep into the earth, which is known as the Abyss, which is divided into 7 layers. The Abyss harbors artifacts and remnants of civilizations long gone, and is, therefore, a popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descents into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. Returning from the Abyss can be dangerous as "the Curse of the Abyss," a mysterious and potentially fatal malady, manifests upon ascension. The deeper one goes, the more acute the effects of the curse; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences. Some legendary Cave Raiders earn the title of White Whistles.

Kiyui has theoretical knowledge about The Abyss but has not yet made his first dive into it yet, presumably because he is too young.

The delvers' rankings are divided into different categories. This is the hierarchy, from lowest to highest: Red-whistle. Blue-whistle. Moon-whistle. Black-whistle. White-whistle.

Acquaintances:

Riko: A 12-year-old blonde girl with glasses, she is a friend of Kiyui. She is a red-whistle.

Nat: Another orphan at the Belchero orphanage, a red-whistle.

Shiggy: Kiyui's friend. A boy with black hair and glasses who is usually seen looking after Kiyui and taking care of him.

Reg: A part-robot boy who was found by the children unconscious one day in the first layer of the abyss. He and Kiyui seem to be close.

Miss Belchero: Director of the orphanage and school. Scary and stern. She often scolds Kiyui for reading on the balcony and dropping his books.

Jiruo: He is the leader/instrutor of the red-whistle delvers and a young teacher of the orphanage. He's calm and responsible. A Moon-whistle.
