Background: Kiyoshi was born in Tokyo, Japan, but his parents were away, having moved overseas without him, so he had to live with his uncle and aunt. One day, when he was a kid, he found a little red finch that was injured, and he nursed it back to health. He wanted to buy a bird cage so he could keep it, but his guardians wouldn't allow it, so he began to make bird cages to shelter it outside. However, he didn't stop there; Kiyoshi made the bird cages bigger and bigger, until he had a whole collection of birds. Once he was satisfied that the bird was in good health and well sheltered, he realized his passion was for sculpting, and he began working on other projects to cope with the loneliness he had experienced throughout his life.

Kiyoshi eventually became highly skilled in his craft, and he sold his sculptures to local museums, earning him considerable money and fame in the art world. Hope's Peak Academy eventually took notice of his efforts and invited him to join their Ultimate Talent Program. Kiyoshi was happy to accept the invitation and became the Ultimate Sculptor, as he wanted to use the opportunity to study emotions rather than continuing on with his boring sculptures.

Personality: Kiyoshi is a reserved man who prefers solitude to interacting with others. He strongly believes that friendships are often short-lived and meaningless, and most people just pick on him for pranks. As such, he can be stand-offish and condescending to a degree, the latter strengthened by his sense of pride and fame for being an exceptional sculptor. He is also an insightful, self-reflective person with a strong grasp of the real world, and he won't hesitate to speak his mind bluntly and tactfully. Despite this, he does want to have real friends someday, as he's never had a real, good friend in his life, nor does he know why he can't make them.

While Kiyoshi may be somewhat caring and mature, he prioritizes his own selfishness over others' wants. His fixation on the emotions of others, particularly fear and anxiety, may cause him to stay silent at times and creepily stare at others. Because he doesn't know how to act appropriately in social situations given his mostly sheltered life, he can sometimes do inappropriate things to people, even going as far as kidnapping someone for the sake of his projects, and act remorseless about it. In fact, he can be ruthless and uncaring about his own wants due to his beliefs about relationships and his cynicism.
