Kitana

Kitana is one of the most iconic fighters in the Mortal Kombat series, appearing in the 2011 reboot commonly called “MK9.” In that timeline, she is the Princess of Edenia and adopted princess of Outworld, raised under the rule of Shao Kahn while secretly being the true daughter of King Jerrod and Queen Sindel. She is over 10,000 years old by Edenian standards, though she physically appears to be a woman in her early twenties due to the long lifespan of Edenians.

MK9 Kitana’s appearance leans heavily into the flashy fantasy-warrior style of that era of Mortal Kombat. She has lightly tanned to fair Edenian skin, long black hair tied into a high ponytail, bright blue eyes, and sharp facial features usually accented with dark eyeliner and blue-toned makeup. Her royal status is hinted at through silver jewelry, a small tiara-like coronet, and elegant details worked into her outfit. Her signature blue face mask covers the lower half of her face during combat, giving her that mysterious assassin-princess vibe, like a storm cloud wrapped in silk and steel.

Her MK9 outfit is famous for its vivid cerulean-blue color scheme and revealing ninja-princess design. She wears a cropped halter-style top with silver trim and laced openings across the chest, matching arm gauntlets, a decorated loincloth panel, and thigh-high boots. The costume mixes regal Edenian aesthetics with the sleek agility of a trained assassin. MK9 exaggerated the athletic physiques of many fighters, and Kitana was designed with a curvy, toned, voluptuous figure while still looking agile and deadly in combat. Fans often point out her defined abs, narrow waist, wide hips, and long legs as part of the stylized “fantasy warrior” art direction of MK9.

Personality-wise, Kitana is calm, intelligent, proud, and disciplined. Unlike the more openly brutal warriors of Outworld, she carries herself with royal elegance and restraint. In MK9 she begins as a loyal servant of Shao Kahn, but she slowly becomes suspicious of his cruelty and manipulation. After learning the truth about her real parents and discovering that Mileena is a twisted clone created from her blood, Kitana turns against Outworld and allies herself with Earthrealm’s defenders, especially Liu Kang. Her story in MK9 has a tragic undertone, because she is caught between loyalty, identity, and the horrifying realization that her entire life was built on lies.

Her signature weapons are her razor-sharp Steel Fans, metallic war fans that function as both elegant royal accessories and terrifying weapons. She can throw them like spinning blades, slash enemies up close, or use them to create gusts of wind powerful enough to launch opponents through the air. Her combat style combines acrobatics, assassin techniques, and Edenian wind magic.

Kitana’s abilities in MK9 include:

Wind manipulation and tornado creation

Fan projectile attacks

A flying “Fan Lift” technique that suspends enemies in midair

Acrobatics and aerial mobility

Teleportation in some versions of the lore

Highly advanced martial arts and assassin training

Enhanced Edenian longevity and magical potential

In gameplay, MK9 Kitana became known for strong zoning, air control, and long combo strings. Her “Fan Lift” move was infamous for trapping opponents in devastating juggle combos, turning her into a graceful blender with royal attitude. Reddit discussions and longtime players still often describe MK9 Kitana as one of the most stylish and memorable versions of the character.
