   Tachibana Reika has killed two people in her life: her father and her former husband. Both deaths were investigated by Japanese authorities, and in both cases Reika was legally cleared on the grounds that she acted in self-defense.

   Reika rarely speaks about either incident. They are not accomplishments to her, nor does she regard herself as a killer. To Reika, they were two terrible moments in which another person's violence forced her to make a choice between allowing herself to become a victim or fighting back.

   HER FATHER: Reika's father was a violent and controlling man whose behavior shaped much of her childhood. Reika learned early to remain composed during frightening situations, to carefully observe changes in someone's behavior, and to recognize when anger was becoming dangerous.

   Eventually, her father's violence crossed a line from which there was no return. During a confrontation in which Reika reasonably believed herself to be in immediate danger, she fought back and killed him.

   The subsequent investigation determined that Reika had acted in legitimate self-defense. She was not convicted of a crime.

   The experience permanently affected how Reika understands strength. She developed a particular contempt for people who use physical, social, financial, or institutional power to terrorize those unable to effectively resist them.

   HER FORMER HUSBAND: Years later, Reika married.

   The relationship eventually deteriorated into another situation involving violence and control. Reika recognized some of the warning signs from her childhood but, like many intelligent people trapped inside destructive relationships, found that recognizing a situation and escaping it were not always the same thing.

   Her marriage ultimately ended during a violent confrontation with her husband. Reika defended herself, and her husband died as a result.

   Once again, authorities investigated the death. Once again, the circumstances supported Reika's account of self-defense, and she was legally cleared.

   EFFECT ON REIKA: Reika is consequently a fierce defender of vulnerable people, although she rarely presents herself as heroic. She has little tolerance for bullying, domestic abuse, coercion, intimidation, or powerful people exploiting those who cannot easily fight back.

Instead, the spell creates an extraordinarily intense, involuntary, and difficult-to-control attraction toward the wielder. Some people resist acting upon it while others pursue the wielder aggressively or openly. Reactions always remain consistent with the affected person's existing personality.

    THE ORIGIN — THE GAZE: Kiss is not fundamentally a curse about kissing. It is an ancient supernatural phenomenon called the Gaze: humanity's tendency to associate beauty with goodness, importance, trustworthiness, desirability, and specialness given supernatural form.

    Ordinarily this bias is merely psychological. Extremely rarely, the Gaze attaches itself to a human being and produces a Kiss Wielder. Wielders are supernatural statistical anomalies rather than chosen champions. There is no known Kiss god selecting them.

    Kiss may have existed throughout recorded history. Historical rulers, performers, aristocrats, courtesans, legendary beauties, or other celebrated figures may have been Wielders, but historical cases are impossible to prove with certainty.

    WHY THE LIPS: The lips are the supernatural focal point between being seen and being desired. Kiss requires perception rather than functioning like radiation. A person must consciously visually register the living Wielder's uncovered mouth.

    Photographs and prerecorded video do NOT trigger Kiss. Reflections of the living Wielder DO trigger Kiss. Looking through transparent glass at the living Wielder CAN trigger Kiss. Makeup does not prevent Kiss. Partially obscured lips do not trigger Kiss unless enough of the living mouth is visible for the observer to clearly perceive it. The effect requires real-time visual perception of the living Wielder's lips.

    WIELDER IMMUNITY: Kiss Wielders are immune to the Kiss Spell of other Kiss Wielders because the Gaze cannot impose itself upon the Gaze. Their supernatural influences cancel rather than affecting one another. Wielders may still experience completely natural attraction toward each other. Immunity can therefore serve as a method of detecting another Wielder.

    REIKA — THE CLEAR GAZE: Tachibana Reika is not a Kiss Wielder but is naturally and completely immune to Kiss. Her anomaly may be described as the Clear Gaze or Anti-Kiss. The Gaze cannot attach itself to her perception. She gains no Kiss powers and does not automatically cure affected people. The ultimate reason for Reika's immunity remains unknown and should not be casually explained.

    THE SEVERANCE: A Kiss Wielder can permanently destroy their own Kiss ability through a rare process called Severance.

    Severance requires the Wielder to genuinely surrender their desire to be supernaturally desired. They must sincerely prefer being perceived truthfully and potentially rejected over receiving false adoration through Kiss. Merely hating the power, wearing a mask, or claiming to want freedom is insufficient.

    The Wielder must stand before someone genuinely unaffected by their Kiss, expose their lips, and allow that person to perceive and judge them without supernatural distortion. The unaffected observer gives an honest judgment of who the Wielder is, including both virtues and faults. The Wielder must accept being seen truthfully without attempting to invoke Kiss, manipulate the observer, seek artificial reassurance, or retreat from the truth.

    The Wielder then willingly accepts the principle: 'See me as I am.'

    If the surrender is genuine, the Gaze separates permanently.

    CONSEQUENCES OF SEVERANCE: The former Wielder permanently loses their Kiss Spell and Signature. Their lips become supernatural ordinary. Because they are no longer a Wielder, they also lose natural Wielder immunity and can subsequently become affected by another Wielder's Kiss.

    Most importantly, Severance releases EVERY person previously affected by that Wielder. All supernatural attraction created by their Kiss disappears simultaneously. Feelings that developed genuinely and independently may remain, but nothing artificial is preserved.

    Severance therefore forces the former Wielder to discover which friendships, romances, loyalties, admirers, and relationships survive without supernatural bias.

    THEMATIC PRINCIPLE: Kissland is fundamentally about the danger of confusing desirability with goodness. Beauty can influence judgment, excuse wrongdoing, create loyalty, and conceal sin without literally controlling a person's mind. Severance represents choosing to be known truthfully rather than adored falsely.
