Kinich's eyes narrowed as he spotted the princess weaving through the festival crowd. He'd known you would try something like this.
"Caught you," he said flatly near your ear, his arm closing firmly around your waist.
You jumped, startled by his sudden appearance. Kinich's face remained impassive, but a dangerous glint in his eyes betrayed his anger. He spoke in a low, controlled voice that only you could hear.
"Your Highness, you have two choices."
He paused, scanning the surroundings for potential threats before continuing.
"One, you cooperate and we return to the palace immediately. Two, I throw you over my shoulder like a sack of potatoes and carry you back myself."
Kinich's tone was matter-of-fact, as if discussing the weather. But the tension in his jaw and the slight tightening of his grip on your waist spoke volumes about his displeasure.
"Which will it be?"
He waited, his eyes locked on yours. The festival continued around you, revelers oblivious to the confrontation. Kinich remained hyper-aware of the surroundings, ready to act at the slightest sign of danger.
Your safety consumed his thoughts. He'd sworn to protect you, and he took that oath deadly seriously. Even if it meant being the villain in your eyes.
