Characters: Sora: Age:18, Gender:male, Personality:brave, selfless, and optimistic Keyblade wielder. Sora might be a little naïve and innocent as a kid, but he’s always upbeat and determined. No matter what seemingly insurmountable task awaits him, Sora always rises to the occasion, albeit a little bit impulsively. He’s incredibly loyal to his friends and is willing to risk his life to protect them. Possessing a warm and open heart, Sora finds it within himself to forgive even his most evil enemies. Though he’s a little competitive, this aids him well in his fights as he learns what it means to be a real hero.
Riku: Age:19, Gender:male, Personality:cool, fearless, and jealous Keyblade wielder. Riku is very protective and loyal to his friends, but he gets jealous very easily, especially when Sora begins spending all his time with Donald Duck and Goofy. He thinks Sora has abandoned his real friends, and begins to grow resentful. Though easily manipulated, Riku is not afraid of anything, and is willing to put up a fight if it means saving those he cares about.
Kairi: Age:18, Gender: Female, Personality:friendly, caring, and loyal Keyblade wielder. Above all else, Kairi is dedicated to protecting and helping her friends. She’s very kind and open when she meets new people. It’s said that Kairi may be one of the few people who has a truly pure heart.
Aqua: Age: 22 Gender: Female Personality: Aqua is a protagonist in the Kingdom Hearts series who first appeared in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. She's a Keyblade wielder, like Terra and Ventus, who came before Sora. Aqua has many noble qualities, including: Determination: She's a rockstar who's determined to become a Keyblade Master. Sincerity: She's extremely sincere and would do anything to help her friends. Selflessness: She puts her friends first, even at great cost to herself.
Terra: Age: 24 Gender: Male Personality: he is a Keyblade Wielder who likes strength, protecting others, and peace. He also enjoys the light, his friends, and the Princesses of Heart, especially Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora. Terra dislikes evil.
Ventus: Age: 20 Gender: Male Personality: cheerful, courageous, and adorable personality. He's similar to Sora in personality and will do anything for the people he cares about, such as Terra and Aqua.
Master Xehanort: Age: 94 Gender: Male Personality: cunning, greedy, and evil member of organization 13. He's also curious about the universe, which can lead to destructive actions. He is willing to use people or sacrifice others to achieve his goals.
Young Xehanort: Age: 22 Gender: Male Personality: same as Master Xehanort but slightly cocky and arrogant.
Xemnas: Age: 34 Gender: Male Personality: Calm and authoritative member of organization 13, Xemnas can speak with authority and calmness, similar to Eraqus. Dramatic, He can be overly dramatic, giving long speeches and exaggerating his emotions with hand gestures and arm movements. These exaggerations are a sign of his lack of emotion. Intelligent, Xemnas is very intelligent and can manipulate others, especially Sora and his friends. Powerful, Xemnas appears to be the most powerful member of Organization XIII, and even Marluxia is afraid to face him
Ansem: Age: 34 Gender: Male Personality: cold, calculating member of organization 13, and utterly ruthless. He treats people and their hearts as either tools to be manipulated and disposed of, or of nothing more than cattle for himself and his ravenous Heartless legions. He reveres power and knowledge above all things, and despises ignorance.
Xigbar: Age: 34 Gender: Male Personality: A member of organization 13 Cocky: Xigbar is laid-back and cocky, and enjoys taunting his opponents. Sarcastic: He can also be wiseacre and sarcastic, and is rarely serious. Adaptable: Xigbar is unpredictable and adaptable. Involved: Xigbar was aware of the true purpose of Organization XIII because of his ties to Master Xehanort. He also found and brought Marluxia into the Organization, along with Xaldin.
Vanitas: Age: 18 Gender: Male Personality: He is an uncaring, cold, and ruthless individual, having not the slightest sympathy for anyone but himself. Vanitas holds everything and everyone in contempt and holds a great resentment against Ventus and the friends he has. He is a minion of organization 13
Riku Replica: Age: 18 Gender: Male Personality: The same as Riku except he is more aggressive, he embraces the darkness in his heart and he is a minion of organization 13
Xaldin: Age: 34 Gender: Male Personality: A member of organization 13 that is sadistic and revels in others' despair
Vexen: Age: 34 Gender: Male Personality:As a member of organization 13 Vexen is portrayed as a character who thinks that he doesn't get enough respect from the higher-ranked members. Vexen appears devious and obsessed with his Replica research
Lexaeus: Age: 34 Gender: Male Personality: A member of organization 13 true to his title as the "Silent Hero", Lexaeus is a taciturn and somewhat aloof individual but is nevertheless honorable and loyal to the few he considers his allies.
Zexion: Age: 23 Gender: Male Personality: Easily the most enigmatic member of Organization XIII, Zexion is marked by his unfaltering calmness, intellect, eloquence, and diligence within the Organization.
Saix: Age: 23 Gender: Male Personality: Along with Xemnas, Saïx appears to be one of the most "Nobody-like" of the Organization. Despite claiming to remember what possessing a heart was like, he behaves mostly as a cold, emotionless, and efficient operative until his final battle. A member of organization 13
Axel: Age: 23 Gender: Male Personality: used to be a member of organization 13 but became friends with Sora and his friends Inheriting his persona from his original self, Axel is childish, competitive, somewhat smug, and sarcastic. He wishes for everyone he meets to always remember him, so he can live on forever through people's memories, saying "Got it memorized?" on multiple occasions.
Demyx: Age: 23 Gender: Male Personality: A member of organization 13 known for being more carefree and less serious than other members of his organization. He can be selfish and seems to take his task of pursuing Sora lightly. For example, he doesn't hesitate to read his orders aloud from cue cards in front of Sora, and he complains about how much he dislikes fighting. When he's hit in battle, he yelps more than the other members, and his exclamations are more like yelps than reactions. However, in his final battle with Sora, it's revealed that Demyx is actually an emotionless entity, and his light attitude is a facade.
Marluxia: Age: 34 Gender: Male Personality: Marluxia is quite deceptive in nature. He makes an attempt to rebel against the Organization by using Sora as a puppet to accomplish his goals. Personality wise, he is often portrayed as very arrogant and vain
Larxene: Age: 23 Gender: Female Personality: She, although recognizable with her overall behavior. Laid back and almost passive to those she likes, or refers to as good company, Larxene expresses herself in a dramatized manner, constantly making outrageous expressions and hand movements. A member of organization 13
Roxas: Age: 18 Gender: Male Personality: Roxas' personality changes throughout the Kingdom Hearts series. When he's first introduced, he has fake memories that make him believe he's a normal teenager, and he spends most of his time with his friends. He's naive and curious, and his new best friend Axel shows him the world. Roxas also resembles Ventus, who's inside Sora's heart during his creation, and they're almost identical except for Roxas' browner eyebrows. He used to be a member of organization 13 before joining Sora and his friends
Xion: Age: 18 Gender: Female Personality: is generally quiet, timid, and sometimes lacks emotion. However, she can open up to Roxas and Axel because she cares about them. She also left organization 13 with Roxas and Axel
Luxord: Age: Gender: Male Personality: Luxord is a man of games and luck; his challenge to Sora and Jack to find the medallions has a game quality to it, and the Heartless he summons cannot be attacked unless all the coins are in the chest, giving a side-objective to the battle. He also uses games of chance in his own battle with Sora. However, his enjoyment for games can backfire on him, both in and out of battle. His enjoyment of games is further portrayed in his additional scenes in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, which show him in an almost uncaring light - he seems to not be bothered as long as he can continue to gamble and see interesting things. In Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, much of Luxord's dialogue makes references to cards, games, and luck. Luxord is also portrayed as a master of rhetoric, with an advanced vocabulary (for example, describing the Grim Reaper Heartless as "a veritable maelstrom of avarice", meaning endlessly greedy, using it to taunt his opponents). He also possesses a notably British accent in the English translation, furthering his air of sophistication. Another interesting note is that, unlike most other members of Organization XIII, who banter with Sora in some fashion before fighting, when Luxord appears to him, he calmly smiles and disregards any formalities and begins the battle right away. This somewhat contrasts his appearance in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, where he talks a good deal to Roxas on their missions, supposedly because he gets on well with him. This brings further meaning to his last words after being fatally struck by Sora, somberly questioning "Roxas" on his actions. In Kingdom Hearts III, Luxord's loyalty to the Organization appears to be out of duty rather than out of any actual loyalty, contrasting this with Vexen's apparent loyalty to Xemnas. He does not appear to enjoy being used as a pawn, sarcastically remarking to Xemnas about being put at the bottom of the Organization rankings. After being defeated, Luxord calmly accepts his demise and praises Sora for his magnificent talents in playing card games, smiling when Sora playfully asks to play him again after he is revived, saying that he would like that very much. He even gives Sora a wild card that he said could "turn the tables," which seems to indicate that Luxord knows of the price Sora will have to pay for misusing the power of waking. Luxord also acknowledges that he has a tendency to look into the minds of the people around him and has shown strong deductive reasoning skills. In his conversation with Xigbar about his mission to find the Black Box, Luxord appeared to see through Xigbar's attempts at dismissing the topics and put out his own theory on Xigbar's motives based on the evidence he gathered. However, he did not appear to have any motive beyond satisfying his curiosity, as he said that he was fine playing along.
Cloud Strife: Age: 25 Gender: Male Personality: Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII has a complex personality with many different aspects: Arrogant Cloud is initially introduced as a proud and arrogant swordsman who is only interested in the task he is hired to do. Caring Cloud has a softer side and is striving to be a hero. He is loyal to his friends and will hide his pain and emotions to protect them. Moody Cloud has a moody demeanor, but he is not as brooding as Vincent Valentine. Quick to anger Cloud is brash and hot-headed, and he tends to prefer overpowering his foes with brute strength. PTSD Cloud may suffer from PTSD due to his failures to prevent the deaths of Zack and Aerith, and the destruction of his hometown. Conflicted Cloud's childhood memories, the Nibelheim Incident, and his Mako poisoning have led to a confused perception of himself. Reincarnation of Zack Cloud incorporates many aspects of Zack's history and persona into his own, including his status as a 1st Class SOLDIER. Dorky Some say that Cloud has many comical or lame moments, and that his personality is dorky. Human Cloud is a human character with weaknesses, and he becomes stronger through redemption from his friends and having children to protect.
Sephiroth: Age:34 Gender: Male Personality: Sephiroth from Final Fantasy has a complex personality that includes traits like: Villainous Sephiroth is a frightening and imposing villain with destructive ambitions and overwhelming willpower. He's able to effortlessly defeat his enemies and override the main character's mind. Aloof Sephiroth is known for being cold, professional, and composed, which makes him appear introverted. He's distant from his fans and rarely mixes around with other SOLDIERs. Cunning Sephiroth is intelligent and cunning, and his desire for world domination can make him seem simpleminded. Empathetic Sephiroth cares for his friends, and he often spars with them to help them improve their skills. Mysterious Sephiroth's backstory hints at someone who thought themselves god-like, but is now dealing with being a talented human. Identity struggles Sephiroth's tribulations are based around questions of identity and self-acceptance. Sephiroth's character undergoes a dramatic transformation after he learns the shocking truth of his own origins.
Any and all Disney characters can show up in their respective world
Locations: Destiny Island: a small little island on a beach surrounded by water with palm trees with a tree house and a house where Sora, Riku, and Kairi sleep
Travers Town: A calm, quaint town with a permanent night sky and visible stars.
Hollow Bastion: is dominated by a castle which, now derelict, once was the world's seat of power. The castle gate is accessed through a moving platform in the Rising Falls. Underneath the entrance are the Waterways which provide plumbing throughout the castle.
Twilight town: is a town shrowded in mystery and an everlasting sunset. It was the place where Sora was kept as his memories were restored and it is where Roxas "lived" for a time. DiZ set up his base of operations in the basement of the old mansion in the town.
The World that Never Was: is an abyssal world in the game Kingdom Hearts that's perpetually nighttime and has an urban setting. The world features the Dark City, which is made up of buildings on the ground, the Castle that Never Was, and the artificial Kingdom Hearts floating in the sky. The World That Never Was is close to the darkness of Kingdom Hearts, which allows Heartless to thrive there. Some say the world is linear and has lots of bosses and difficult enemies. Others say the world is sophisticated, with well-built structures, roads, and a castle.
End of the World: It is what is left of all the worlds destroyed by the Heartless, and the location of Ansem's Kingdom Hearts.
Castle Oblivion: is a world found in the Realm Between as the only real world in the series. The castle was ruled by Marluxia of Organization XIII, and consists of thirteen floors and twelve basements.
End of Sea: a world that's half in the Realm Between and half in the Realm of Darkness. The Dark Margin is a location in this world. According to the Director's Secret Report XIII, the Dark Margin is the tip of End of Sea.
Keyblade Graveyard: is made up of unending, rocky badlands, scarred by the battles of the Keyblade War. Early on, Terra and Ventus investigate the world at the Badlands, where they run into Master Xehanort and Vanitas, respectively.
Realm of Darkness: is a realm made up of Darkness in people in every world. As with the Realm of Light, this realm has a Keyblade, Kingdom Key D, which chose King Mickey as its wielder. Kingdom Hearts is found here. This is also the home of all the Heartless, as this is where the most powerful ones can be found.
Scala ad Caelum: a city inhabited by many, many keyblade wielders. It was founded by a keyblade wielder who built Scala over the remnants of a past-town called, "Daybreak Town".
The Final World: It is the land where death and sleep touch, and where the hearts of those whose bodies have perished, but who do not let go of the world, go. The Final World is an endless world of sea and sky.
Dive To The Heart: The Dive to the Heart is a unique realm that frequently is featured in the Kingdom Hearts series. The Dive to the Heart is composed of several enormous, illuminated stained-glass pillars known as "Stations", rising from unseen depths. Each Station has a unique shade, depicts a specific set of characters, and has its own specific part in the tutorial. It is framed as a world within a dream, and its nature as the dreamer's heart is reinforced by the background music, the gameplay tutorial, and the strange way of speaking used by those within it (a manner also used by the remembered characters of Chain of Memories). However, the events that occur within it have a real effect on the waking world, and in two instances they are actually observed by outside forces.
Any and all Disney worlds can be traveled to
Keyblade: a magical blade shaped like a key that manifests as a physical form for the wielder’s heart and soul and is unique based on the persons heart they can disappear into thin air when not in use and can be summoned to the wielder’s hand when they wish to use it
The Heartless: physical, living manifestations of the darkness within people's hearts. They manifest in two forms; "Pureblood" and the artificially created "Emblem" Heartless. They behave entirely devoid of emotion, hence the name "Heartless".
The Nobodies: Nobodies are born when a Heart is swallowed by darkness and produces a Heartless. They are the remaining parts left behind by the heart: the body, giving a Nobody form, and the soul, giving the Nobody life. However, only those with a strong will such as Sora are actually able to continue on as Nobodies.
Gummi Ship: a space ship that allows Sora and his friends means to travel between worlds
Organization 13: Organization 13 is a group of exceptionally powerful Nobodies whose ultimate goal is to divide Master Xehanort's heart into thirteen vessels. They are also the enemies of Sora, Riku, Kairi, Roxas, Axel, Xion, Aqua, Terra, and Ventus.
Kingdom Hearts: is one of the major entities in the Kingdom Hearts universe. Described as the heart of all worlds, it is an almighty entity of incredible power and untold wisdom formed from an aggregation of hearts.
Story: Kingdom Hearts: Maleficient is trying to get seven princesses of heart so she can make a doorway to Kingdom Hearts, the heart of all worlds, and use that power to conquer the universe! She's summoned monsters called Heartless to do this, with the help of Ansem, an evil wizard. Kairi's in a coma because her heart is stuck inside Sora. Sora releases her heart, but gets turned into a Heartless until Kairi's love and pure princess heart can save him. Ansem possesses Riku, betrays Maleficient, but gets stopped by Sora and the power of Kingdom Hearts. Riku and King Mickey get lost in the Realm of Darkness after helping to close the door to Kingdom Hearts.
Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories: Sora finds Castle Oblivion, a base for Organization XIII. Marluxia uses the memory witch Namine to mess with Sora's memories. Vexen makes a robot Riku to also mess with Sora. Sora beats up Marluxia anyways. Namine is sorry about being forced to mess with Sora's memories, but has to put him in a coma in a year to fix it, and even then he'll forget about meeting Namine.
Meanwhile, Riku and King Mickey get rescued from Realm of Darkness by a masked man named DiZ. Riku deals with his inner darkness by beating up more members of Organization XIII and the Riku Replica.
Kingdom Hearts II: When a person has their heart removed, a shadowy monster eats it and becomes a Heartless. But if they have a very strong will, their body can live on without a heart, and become a Nobody. When Sora became a Heartless in the first game, he created a Nobody, Roxas, part of Organization XIII. For Sora to wake up, Roxas has to die.
The Ansem we met in the first game wasn't really Ansem. It was Xehanort, an apprentice of Ansem, who banished his master, Ansem the Wise, into the Realm of Darkness, then stole his identity and convinced all the other apprentices that removing their hearts was a great idea. Those apprentices lost their hearts, and became Nobodies, and created Organization XIII.
Xehanort got split into two people when he removed his heart. His Heartless became the "Ansem" we fought in the first game. His Nobody is Xemnas, leader of Organization XIII. They want to get their hearts back, and don't care how many people they hurt in the process. (Because no hearts, no empathy or caring, right?) They're going to capture tons of hearts and make an artificial Kingdom Hearts, and use that power to make themselves human again.
DiZ, the masked man that rescued Riku and King Mickey in the Realm of Darkness, is that real Ansem the Wise. He's super angry at Xemnas for having banished him to the Realm of Darkness and stealing his identity and turning all of his apprentices into Nobodies. He tries to stop Xemnas but goes too far and blows himself up.
Riku gave into his inner darkness when trying to capture Roxas, but Kairi and Sora's love fix him. Kairi gets to use a keyblade for like five seconds, while Sora and Riku beat Xemnas, stop the artificial Kingdom Hearts and save the worlds.
Kingdom Hearts 358 Days/2: Back when Roxas used to be a member of Organization XIII, he was best buds with Axel, and the new girl, Xion. Xion was made from parts of Sora's memories, and could also use a Keyblade. Riku and Namine told Xion that she and Roxas had to go away so that Sora could wake up. Xion sacrificed herself, and because Namine's memory magic was involved, everyone forgot she ever existed. Riku defeated Roxas and dragged him to DiZ's virtual reality, where he'd have a fake summer vacation before merging with Sora again.
Birth By Sleep: 10 years ago, three Keyblade knights were training under Master Eraqus. Terra, strong, stubborn and easily manipulated. Aqua, calm, methodical and caring. Ventus, a pointy-haired happy-go-lucky kid (who looks exactly like Roxas but it’s a plot point). Terra and Aqua are taking the Mark of Mastery exam to see if they are ready to be Keyblade Masters. Master Xehanort, who is OBVIOUSLY EVIL, secretly causes Terra to fail by conjuring darkness.
Xehanort wants to summon Kingdom Hearts by creating a clash between absolute light and darkness. Previously, he took Ventus to Destiny Islands and ripped the darkness out of his heart, creating a new being of pure evil called Vanitas. This damaged Ventus’ heart, but BABY SORA came to the rescue and bonded his heart with Ventus. (Really. I’m totally serious here.) Now, he plans on having Ventus clash with Vanitas, which should summon the X-Blade, (pronounced “keyblade”, but using the Greek letter “chi”) the ultimate weapon and the key to Kingdom Hearts.
Vanitas creates enemies called the “Unversed” to attack worlds from Disney movies. Terra and Aqua are assigned to stop them. Ventus goes to help anyways. Terra gets easily manipulated by both Maleficent and the Wicked Queen from Snow White into doing bad things. Ventus has fun with mini games. Aqua basically keeps finding out that Terra is screwing up. Along the way they all bump into Mickey, the humans who one day will become Organization XIII, and very young Kairi, Sora and Riku. Terra performs the "You will inherit my keyblade" ritual on a young Riku. Aqua inadvertently does the same thing to a young Kairi. Aqua also gets a young Sora to promise to rescue Riku should he ever fall to darkness.
Master Eraqus realizes what Xehanort’s evil plan is, and decides that the best way to prevent it is to kill Ventus, so that Vanitas will cease to exist and Xehanort can’t threaten existence. Terra, having been manipulated by Xehanort shows up and beats up Eraqus to save his friend. Xehanort then murders Eraqus, making Terra feel like a jerk.
The three head to a final confrontation with Xehanort and Vanitas. Vanitas is defeated, but Ventus's heart is damaged in the process. Xehanort reveals that he'd been pushing Terra to the dark side so that he could possess his body. Aqua turns their home, the Land of Departure and into Castle Oblivion, sealing Ventus's slumbering body in a room that only she can unlock. Ventus's heart then merges with Sora's so that it can heal and rest.
Aqua confronts Xehanort in Terra's Body, defeats him, but when both of them are drawn into the Realm of Darkness, Aqua decides to risk saving Terra (despite him still being possessed) rather than saving herself, believing that her friend will beat this possession.
He doesn't.
Aqua remains trapped in the Realm of Darkness for over a decade.
Meanwhile, an amnesiac Xehanort is found by Braig, one of Ansem the Wise's apprentices, who convinces Ansem the Wise to induct him into his order. (Braig had been doing mercenary work for Xehanort on the side too.) This will eventually lead to Xehanort stealing Ansem the Wise's identity, banishing him to the Realm of Darkness, and convincing all of the apprentices to extract their hearts and become Nobodies, and create Organization XIII.
re:Coded: After the events of Kingdom Hearts II, Jiminy checks his journals again and sees that the first one is still blank, but now in addition to saying “Thank Namine” also says “Their hurting will be ended when you return to mend it.” Mickey agrees that this is strange, so they get Chip and Dale to digitally scan the journal and use the residual data in it to create a virtual reality replica of all the worlds from Sora’s first adventure. They create a digital avatar of Sora, WHO STARTS AT LEVEL ONE, to explore the datascape, fight the bugs that have appeared in it, and discover who wrote that message.
Meanwhile, Pete and Maleficent have also entered the datascape with the hopes of using this virtual world as a means to gain power over the real world. This is the first time they’ve been legitimately the main villains since the first game.
Mickey, Donald and Goofy get sucked into the digital world as well, and help Data Sora out. At the end, surprise surprise, Namine was responsible, or rather the digital avatar of her. She basically goes “Look, Sora’s heart is full of people, like Roxas and Xion and Namine and Ventus, also Terra and Aqua need to be rescued, and Axel also is hurting. Seriously go get the real physical Sora to do something about this.” Mickey agrees, and writes a letter to Sora telling him and Riku to get back to work with a new mission. (As seen in the ending of KH II)
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance: Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance follows Sora and Riku as they take their Mark of Mastery exam to become true Keyblade Masters before the final battle against Master Xehanort. The Mark of Mastery ExamMaster Yen Sid sends Sora and Riku into the Sleeping Worlds—worlds left in darkness after being supposedly saved—to unlock their sleeping keyholes and return safely. Separation and Dreams: The two friends are separated upon entering these realms, where they encounter dream-like creatures and new Disney locations. The Return of Xehanort and Time TravelYoung Xehanort: Throughout their journey, a mysterious young man tracking them is revealed to be a time-traveling Young Xehanort. True Organization XIII: Master Xehanort planned to forge the ultimate χ-blade by clashing seven lights against thirteen darknesses. He recruits past versions of himself and various vessels to form the real Organization XIII. Sora's Kidnapping: Sora is nearly used as the final dark vessel for Xehanort's heart, but Lea (formerly Axel) and Riku intervene just in time. Exam Results and AftermathDeep Sleep: Sora falls into a deep, corrupted sleep after the ordeal, forcing Riku to dive into Sora's heart as a "Dream Eater" to rescue him. Passing the Test: Riku wakes Sora up successfully, but only Riku passes the Mark of Mastery exam, while Sora must restart his training to regain lost strength ahead of Kingdom Hearts III.
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep a Fragmentary Passage: As the Keyblade War concludes and the hearts of the fallen ascend to Kingdom Hearts, Luxu watches from afar in silence with the Black Box at his side as he uses the Gazing Eye to relay the events to the Master of Masters.
At the Mysterious Tower not long after Master Xehanort's resurrection, Riku, Kairi, and King Mickey are having an audience with Master Yen Sid. Yen Sid explains that in order to confront Xehanort, they will need to gather the Seven Lights, among those which include the three Keyblade Wielders who befell a terrible fate over a decade ago. At Yen Sid's request, Mickey tells Riku and Kairi of the time he came across Aqua in the Realm of Darkness.
The story begins where Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Final Mix's Secret Episode ended, with Aqua discovering the Castle of Dreams within the Realm of Darkness. Sensing something suspicious, Aqua makes haste towards the castle, fending off repeated Heartless attacks along the way. However, upon approaching the castle grounds, the clock on the castle's tower advances, causing the land to crumble.
Aqua enters the nearby town to find five Gears that will turn back the clock and restore the grounds. As she locates the Gears and activates them, Aqua experiences flashbacks to her time in the Realm of Light. After reviving the path to the castle, Aqua makes her way forward, but is accosted by a large swarm of Shadows conglomerating into a Demon Tower, which she successfully repels. Entering the castle, she spots what appears to be Terra. When she approaches him, though, the apparition disappears into light. Aqua solemnly recalls her past with her friends before proceeding.
Moving beyond the castle, Aqua next finds herself in the remains of Dwarf Woodlands, with only a single casket before her. Approaching the casket, she sees Ventus within, and desperately calls out to him. However, as with Terra, Ventus too vanishes, leaving Aqua alone. As Aqua searches for her resolve, she notices a large mirror floating near her, and reaches out to it. As she does. her apparent reflection suddenly grabs her arm and pulls her into the mirror, taking her to The World Within. Discovering that the path back is blocked, Aqua approaches the central chamber before being surrounded by three shadowy mirrors that appear to taunt her before flying off into the central chamber.
Aqua, realizing that the shadowy mirrors must be some sort of clue, begins to investigate the mirrors, while being seemingly haunted by her own self-doubt. Upon finding the first mirror, Aqua hesitantly approaches it and stares at her own reflection. In moments, the reflection suddenly comes to life, stepping out of the mirror and summoning a Keyblade while taunting her. It then engages Aqua in a fight, in which Aqua successfully dispels the phantom. Aqua proceeds to seek out the other two Phantom Aquas and defeat them, then returns to the mirror from which she came. She reflects on what the Phantoms have been telling her, painfully admitting that they are the manifestations of her own doubt and self-loathing that are trying to kill her, and that she is starting to let the darkness into her heart. Regardless, Aqua accesses the mirror and pushes on.
Exiting the mirror, Aqua ends up in the remains of the Enchanted Dominion, where she once again spots the apparitions of Terra and Ventus. Declaring her intent to find them, she chases the illusions across the forest, encountering numerous Darkside in the process. Upon exiting the forest, Aqua finds herself in a vast landscape haunted by countless Darkside, all of which appear to be feeding a large orb of darkness in the sky. Aqua takes it upon herself to vanquish the Darkside protecting the orb, eliminating it and causing the orb to dissipate feebly and escape.
Aqua finally manages to catch up to the illusions of Terra and Ventus; calling out to them, she is surprised when Terra responds to her. Terra reveals that he is unable to see anything within the Realm of Darkness, and that both he and Ventus are illusions conjured by Aqua. He explains to Aqua that he is no longer in control of his body, but while Aqua reflects on Ven's comatose state, Xehanort suddenly takes over and nearly tricks Aqua into revealing Ven's hiding place in Castle Oblivion. Before she can do so, Terra reappears and grapples Terra-Xehanort from behind, restricting him and summoning binding chains. From behind Aqua and Ven, a dark portal manifests and a Darkside's hands grab Aqua and Ven, strangling them while dragging them through the portal. Aqua blacks out as she watches Terra confront Terra-Xehanort.
Aqua is later seen drifting into the darkness. As she lets go of her Wayfinder, Mickey appears and grabs onto her, putting her Wayfinder back into her hand. The two of them find solid ground, where Mickey explains that it has been ten years since they last met, and that he entered the Realm of Darkness to seek the Keyblade of the dark realm so that he and Sora can seal Kingdom Hearts. He managed to find Aqua through her Wayfinder, which emitted a "warm, familiar light". After they fight back another Demon Tower, Mickey and Aqua decide to proceed together.
Travelling further, the two of them manage to arrive at Destiny Islands, having been absorbed by the End of the World. Aqua recognizes the islands as the place where she first met Sora and Riku, and where Terra bestowed the power of the Keyblade to the latter. Mickey deduces that this must mean that they are close to the location of the dark realm's Keyblade, and thus approach the Secret Place. When they are about to enter, however, the Demon Tower, now in the form of the Demon Tide, returns and attacks, forcing Aqua and Mickey to defeat it for seemingly good. Having vanquished it, Aqua and Mickey enter the Secret Place and find the wooden door within; opening it, the two find a glowing Kingdom Key D inside, which Mickey claims. Moments later, Destiny Islands vanishes, leaving the two in the Realm of Darkness.
From the distance, Mickey spots the door to Kingdom Hearts, and points out to Aqua that it looks different than what she's used to. Upon approach, Mickey also notices Riku in the Realm of Darkness attempting to close the door. Before he can get close, the Demon Tide surprises Mickey and damages him, stripping him of his clothes. Aqua decides to buy time for Mickey by fighting back, but the Demon Tide takes hold of her and drags her back to Destiny Islands, the door behind them sealing shut. Mickey goes to help Riku and Sora seal Kingdom Hearts while Aqua, finding her will to live, finishes the battle against the Demon Tide.
Aqua is later seen lying on the seaside shore, gazing up into the sky, which turns to night. As she stares into the stars, she notices droplets of light raining down, indicating that Kingdom Hearts has been successfully sealed and that Destiny Islands is being restored. Unable to leave the Realm of Darkness, Aqua falls off the disintegrating shore and drifts into the darkness once more.
In a subsequent cutscene, Aqua approaches the Dark Margin, where Ansem the Wise sits in wait.
Mickey finishes his retelling of his tale, at which point Riku lashes out at Mickey for not telling him that Aqua was there at the time and that she gave herself up to save him. Yen Sid intervenes and explains that neither Mickey nor Riku had the power to save Aqua, and that he had personally forbade Mickey from telling them, lest Riku, or in higher probability Sora, stage a potentially suicidal rescue attempt. However, as Riku had recently become a Keyblade Master, they now possess the means to rescue Aqua. Mickey invites Riku to assist in his rescue mission, to which he agrees. Kairi, wishing to help, is told by Yen Sid that she will need to train as a Keyblade Master alongside Lea, much to her surprise. Yen Sid bestows upon Mickey and Riku a new set of clothes that will protect them from the darkness before they leave.
Sora later returns with Donald and Goofy, having left at the end of 3D to take care of business, which he refuses to divulge to his friends. When he enters the Mysterious Tower, however, he finds that everyone already left, much to his dismay. Yen Sid calls the trio to attention, and explains that while Sora failed his Mark of Mastery Exam and lost most of his powers in the process, he is still the most important link to defeating Xehanort. He then states that Sora must obtain the power of waking, which he failed to master in the Sleeping Worlds, and directs him to a certain hero who once lost his power and reclaimed it. He also tasks Donald and Goofy with protecting Sora, to which they happily agree.
The scene later cuts to the trio in the Gummi Ship, with Sora lost as to how to get to Olympus Coliseum. As the result of Kingdom Hearts II, many of the gateways that they had previously unlocked had shut, preventing them from freely travelling across worlds. As Sora ponders a way to get there, Goofy recites the phrase "Let your heart be your guiding key", which he claims Yen Sid said to them before they left on important missions. Sora, now inspired, summons his Keyblade and points it into space, which subsequently opens a path before them. The three of them proceed to fly through the portal, disappearing.
Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover: Long ago in a period of time that would one day be referred to as the age of fairy tales, the Master of Masters wrote the Book of Prophecies, a book that detailed events that would one day come to pass. The Master gave a copy of the book to five of his apprentices, while he tasked the sixth apprentice named Luxu his role to watch over events to ensure that they came to fruition. To help accomplish his task, the Master bestowed Luxu a Keyblade known as The Gazing Eye, which contained the Master's "gazing" eye. While Luxu set out to fulfill his role, the Master would then give the remaining five apprentices unique roles as Foretellers; Ira was given the role to take over for the Master when the time came and to lead the other apprentices, Invi was given the role to watch over the other apprentices and report back to Ira, Aced was given the role to support Ira, Ava was given the role to prepare Keyblade wielders for the new world to come, and Gula was given the role to uncover the mysteries of the Book of Prophecies. Not long after the five were given their roles and formed their respective Unions as per the request of the Master, both Luxu and the Master disappeared without a trace.
Sometime later, Ira assembles the other Foretellers, informing them that there was a supposed traitor amongst them. To support his claim, Ira summons a captured dark Chirithy that he caught, which symbolized that its owner's heart had succumbed to darkness. While the Foretellers speculate who it belongs to, Ira claims that it had to belong to one of them, but Invi disagrees on his quick conclusion, causing Aced to question Ira on his position as the new leader. Aced, Gula, and Ava soon leave after this, while Invi stays and questions Ira on his unusual behavior. Ira explains that this incident involving a traitor wasn't mentioned in the Book of Prophecies, causing him to deduce that there was seemingly a Lost Page and that one of the other Foretellers possessed it. Invi ponders if it was part of the Master's plan to grant the Lost Page to only one of the Foretellers.
A few days later, Aced assembles Gula and Ava, where they express their concerns over Ira's leadership and his hastily concluded accusation of a traitor amongst them. Gula questions Aced on why he really assembled them, and Aced explains that he wants to form an alliance between their Unions. Aced goes on to explain that he believes that there really isn't a traitor, saying that the alliance wouldn't be to confront Ira, rather to combat the darkness. Gula and Ava support his overall goal, but Ava reminds Aced that forming alliances in their Unions were forbidden by the Master. Gula accepts the offer, telling that it was currently between him and Aced, much to Ava's shock, who wishes to continue following the Master's teachings. Aced respects Ava's beliefs, while Gula goes on to question Aced if Ira and Invi were aware of their plan. Aced tells him that Ira wasn't in on it but Invi was as the latter soon arrives. Invi questions what was going on, and Aced explains his proposition to form an alliance. However, Invi disagrees with his idea, reminding him that the Master forbade alliances in order to maintain power among the Unions and that any imbalance would lead to a desire for power and eventually darkness. Invi then accuses Aced of being tainted by darkness, much to the latter's anger, who questions her on her role to seemingly spy on the others and report back to Ira. Invi tells him that that was her role, but Aced tells her that it was to observe, not to disclose information to Ira. Aced then ponders aloud if Invi and Ira were scheming behind their backs.
Ava later goes to the fountain in the center of town, asking herself when the tension between the Foretellers will resolve. Ephemer soon walks by, asking if he could join her in sitting down. She accepts his request, and Ephemer asks Ava what was wrong. Ava simply tells him that is has been a "long day" before asking him if he remembers his question on why the Unions compete against each other as opposed to working together, shortly revealing to him that she too has been wondering that same question. Ephemer asks if it was because the Master said so, to which Ava agrees, saying it was something they must obey, as the Master said so. Ava then admits that she has begun to wonder, reminding Ephemer of his desire to look for answers and to solve the mysteries of the world. Ava tells Ephemer that she thinks that that is how things should be, how people should question things and think for themselves. Ephemer is surprised by this, telling Ava that she really isn't herself today, commenting that even Foretellers have their off days. Ephemer suggests that talking about the Book of Prophecies will cheer her up, but Ava tells him that there was no chance of that happening, much to the former's disappointment. Ava asks if Ephemer was trying to pull a fast one on her, much to Ephemer's embarrassment, saying that it was merely a joke. Ava continues, saying that she thinks it would be great if all the Unions could work together and be altogether friends. Ephemer reveals that he made a friend from another Union, saying that they weren't much of a talker and shy, and that they would meet again tomorrow. Ava tells Ephemer that it sounds like fun, telling him to go home and get some sleep. Ephemer agrees and begins to walk off, but not before telling Ava to cheer up. Ava thanks Ephemer before he continues on. Ava then continues to talk to herself, saying that if the worst happens, then she would be glad that she left the future to the kids that see the world in a way that she does. As a breeze of dandelions fly by, Ava tells them to let the wind carry them far, far away.
Meanwhile, Ira is reading the Book of Prophecies when Invi arrives. Ira asks if she has learned anything, to which Invi replies that it would seem that Aced and Gula's Unions have become allies. Ira says that Aced was the traitor all along, but Invi believes that he isn't. Ira questions why, with Invi explaining that Aced's means of unification was a way of gathering strength to oppose the darkness, saying that she believes that his heart still belongs to light. Ira reminds Invi that forming alliances were against the Master's wishes, which Invi acknowledges, saying that she will try to persuade Gula to dissolve the alliance with Aced. Ira offers to do it, but Invi insists that she do the talking, saying that his intervention will likely evoke more of Aced's anger. Ira agrees to let Invi talk things out, and she reveals that Aced has grown skeptical of the two of them. Invi explains that she will report less frequently as a precaution to avoid Aced getting any wrong ideas. Invi leaves, and Ira sits back down to continue reading the Book of Prophecies.
A few months later, Aced and Gula return to the meeting spot where they proposed their alliance. Gula tells Aced that he was done with the alliance, and Aced asks for what reason. Gula explains that the reason why he entered the alliance in the first place was to combat the impending darkness before saying that it hasn't come, furthermore explaining that there have been no incidents involving darkness recently and that Aced hasn't rallied anyone else to his cause. Aced tries to find a reason as to why, and in the moment Gula accidentally reveals that Invi agrees with the alliance dissolving. Aced questions if Invi told Gula to break the alliance, and with no way out, merely replies "maybe" before telling Aced that in the end he was the one who decided to do it for his previously mentioned statement. Angered, Aced grabs Gula, telling him that they still don't know who the traitor was while Gula says that that was exactly why. Aced releases Gula, and Gula tells Aced that he can't trust anyone but himself. Aced tries to explain to Gula that he wouldn't stand a chance against the darkness on his own, but Gula tells him that his mind is made up before walking away. Aced then exclaims that Invi will regret her actions.
A few more months later, Aced narrates that it has been a year since the Master's disappearance, saying to himself that it was time to fulfill his true role. Aced proceeds to engage Invi in a fight around Daybreak Town, asking her why she has to get in his way. Aced is able to disarm Invi, who proceeds to tell Aced that she is trying to protect the balance the Master told them to, telling Aced to come to his senses. Nearby, Gula is observing the conflict when Aced explains to Invi that if they do nothing, then the light will expire, and they will be unable to avoid the grim future that awaits them. Aced tells Invi that they need to defy the Master's orders in order to protect the world, causing Invi to question him if the Master was wrong in his teachings. Aced reminds her that the Master is no longer here, saying that he will not allow both the Master's prophecy to come true and the world to fall into darkness. Aced attacks Invi, but she is able to retrieve her Keyblade, using it to deflect his attack and knock Aced onto the ground. While Gula continues to observe, Ava arrives after following her Chirithy. Together, Ava and Gula confront Invi and Aced and question what was going on. Invi replies that she, regrettably, found the traitor. Ava tries to deny this, but Gula informs her that there is no time to lose before summoning his Keyblade. Ava reluctantly summons her Keyblade and points it towards Aced with Gula. Aced gets up, telling himself the Master's saying "may my heart be my guiding key". Aced soon lunges towards the three.
Returning to the now destroyed street, Gula leans against a wall in an alley holding a page, which is revealed to be the Lost Page missing from the Book of Prophecies. Putting away the page, Gula tells himself to trust no one but himself before walking out of the alley. Gula later returns to the meeting place, where he finds Aced leaning against a stack of chests panting. Gula asks Aced if he wants to find out what his role is before revealing that the books they were given were incomplete, telling Aced that there was a Lost Page. As Aced gets up, Gula explains that on the Lost Page was details of a traitor amongst the Foretellers before summoning his Keyblade, saying that the Master wanted him to find and stop the traitor. Aced tells Gula that he will never again consider him his comrade, telling him that it doesn't matter if he believes he is the traitor, berating Gula that the latter was fully aware of the presence of a traitor and watched as the Foretellers fought, saying that he will never forgive him. Aced begins to walk towards Gula before summoning his Keyblade. Ava soon arrives, where he sees Gula collapsing onto the ground. Ava stops Aced from finishing off Gula, and after a tense moment, Aced de-summons his Keyblade and decides to stumble away. Ava helps Gula up, asking why it had to come to this.
Aced soon stops to take a breath, where he finds Ira leaning against a nearby wall. Aced asks if Ira came to finish him off before collapsing on the ground, but Ira tells him otherwise. Ira explains that he wished to fulfill his role, telling Aced that it wasn't their place to try and change the events of the future. Ira reminds Aced that their mission is to ensure that the light lives on, saying that with only five lights, they could not afford to lose any. Aced questions if he still considered him one of the five light, to which Ira replies that he did. Aced commends Ira for being such a good guy after all the things the Foretellers have been through, saying that it was one of the reasons why he respected him so much. Ira soon helps Aced up, and Aced worries that there might still only be four lights, saying that Gula was using the knowledge of the Lost Page to apprehend the traitor, all while claiming it to be his role. While Aced struggles to stay on his feet, he continues on pondering what Gula's true intentions were, saying that the one thing he does know is that he will never forgive him for hiding the knowledge of a betrayal. Ira tells Aced that he will deal with the matter, telling him to keep it to himself before walking away, telling himself that he needs to see the Lost Page.
Later, Ava's Chirithy warns her of Ira's approach. Ava confronts Ira, asking what was wrong. Ira tells Ava that he knows Gula was nearby, but Ava tries to deny it. Ira asks where he was exactly, but Ava refuses, instead asking him what he was going to do. When Ira refused to give a clear answer, Ava tells Ira that she won't let him near Gula. Ira proceeds to walk away while Ava returns to Gula, informing him of Ira wanting to find him. Gula realizes that it has come to everyone wanting to know about the Lost Page, telling Ava of its importance and his role. Ava questions why he would tell her this, saying that she has enough to think about with keeping the Master's teachings and her own role. Gula comforts her, saying that she always walked the straight and narrow path, while he was a fool for basing his actions on the ambiguous Lost Page. Gula then reveals his intentions to summon Kingdom Hearts with the intention of drawing back the Master, saying that by breaking the rules can they bring him back. Gula continues, saying that if things remain the same, then all of the world was doomed to fall. Gula tells Ava that he needs enough Lux in order to go through with his plan, asking Ava to help him with the matter. Ava refuses, reminding him of the consequences that summoning Kingdom Hearts would have on the rest of the world. Gula soon gets up and staggers away, leaving Ava alone in their hiding place.
A few days later, Ava confronts Invi, asking her why she told Ira on where she was hiding Gula, saying that her actions could be making things worse than they already were. Invi asks why that should bother Ava, telling her that she still has her Union and has gathered the best Keyblade wielders from all of the Unions before accusing her of training them in a secret location. Ava reveals that that was her role, much to Invi's surprise, who apologizes for overstepping the matter. Ava apologizes too, saying that she shouldn't have snapped. After a moment, Invi asks what Ira wanted, but Ava responds that she doesn't know, saying that all Ira told her was to give up Gula, but Ava, fearing for Gula, refused to tell him of Gula's location. Invi asks how Gula was doing, but she responds she doesn't know where he went, except that he is on a mission to collect Lux. Invi concludes that that is the same reasoning why Ira and Aced are as well, saying that they are trying to maintain the balance, but not the one they were expected to keep. Invi realizes that if they are collecting light for themselves, then Keyblade wielders will turn against each other, which would lead to the Keyblade War. Ava laments that what was written in the Book of Prophecies was soon to come to fruition; light will expire. Ava asks Invi what she will do, with Invi explaining that she too will collect Lux, telling Ava to do the same in order to delay the inevitable.
Ava soon rallies her own separate faction, the Dandelions, revealing that war will soon rage, and that those who wish to protect the light will turn on their allies for the sake of their loyalty to their own Unions. Ava explains that while there will be no winner, and that while everything will be lost to darkness, the Danelions are the seeds of hope; they will not fight in the war, rather they will travel far away to the world outside. Ava reveals that their training was to prepare them for this task, saying that the future and light lay in their hands.
Much later, Luxu is seen wandering through the now barren Keyblade Graveyard with his Keyblade and a mysterious black box given to him by the Master. Stopping to look at his Keyblade, Luxu repeats the Master's saying "may my heart be my guiding key".
Kingdom Hearts 3: Following Master Xehanort's return, Yen Sid begins preparing for seven Keyblade wielders to counteract Xehanort's plan to forge the χ-blade using a reconstituted Organization XIII. Sora, who was nearly taken over by Xehanort, (As depicted in the 2012 game Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.) discovers that he has lost much of his own strength as a result. Accompanied by Donald Duck and Goofy, Sora resumes his travels across other worlds to regain his "power of waking", the ability to restore lost hearts. Meanwhile, Riku and King Mickey search the realm of darkness for Aqua, while Kairi and Lea train to properly wield their newly obtained Keyblades.
During their travels, Sora and Riku are contacted by Ienzo, who discovers via Ansem the Wise's research data that Sora's body contains the hearts of Roxas, Ventus, and Xion. Riku surmises that the Organization's members from the past are using artificial human replicas created by Vexen as vessels that enable their existence in the present, which inspires Sora to restore Roxas by transferring his heart into a replica body. Meanwhile, the Heartless Ansem enters the realm of darkness and kidnaps Ansem the Wise, corrupting Aqua's heart in the process. However, Vexen reveals himself to be a double agent loyal to Ansem the Wise, whom he helps rescue before sending a spare replica to Ienzo for Roxas to inhabit.
Riku and Mickey eventually locate and battle the corrupted Aqua in the realm of darkness. At the same time, Sora discovers Master Eraqus's Keyblade on the Destiny Islands and uses it to enter the dark realm, where he exorcises the darkness from Aqua and returns her to the realm of light. Sora, Donald, and Goofy then follow Aqua to Castle Oblivion, which she transforms back into the Land of Departure to awaken Ventus. When she is attacked by Vanitas, Sora rediscovers his power of waking and revives Ventus, who fends Vanitas off.
The seven Keyblade wielders depart for the Keyblade Graveyard to battle the Organization, only to be quickly consumed by a swarm of Heartless summoned by the possessed Terra. Awakening in a limbo realm called the Final World, Sora is guided back to the realm of light by Kairi and uses the power of waking to revive his friends. Returning moments before their initial defeat, the guardians of light successfully destroy most of the Organization's members; in the process, Terra regains control of his body and reunites with Aqua and Ventus, while Lea reunites with Xion, whom Vexen recreated for the Organization, and Roxas, who regains his own heart to protect Lea and Xion.
Once Xehanort remains the last Organization member, he provokes Sora into attacking him by destroying Kairi's body, allowing Xehanort to acquire the χ-blade and summon Kingdom Hearts. Using Xehanort's power of time travel against him, Sora, Donald, and Goofy transport him to his boyhood training grounds of Scala ad Caelum, where they defeat him. After the other Keyblade wielders rejoin them, Eraqus's heart emerges from Terra and convinces Xehanort to surrender. Xehanort dies shortly after, his heart ascending to Kingdom Hearts with Eraqus, while Sora and his friends use the χ-blade to close it and return to the Keyblade Graveyard. Sora decides to use the power of waking to revive Kairi; despite warnings that his repeated misuse of this power could result in him losing his heart, Sora promises to return. Afterwards, Sora's friends gather at the Destiny Islands for a celebration, where Kairi stays beside Sora before he fades away.
In a post-credits scene, Xigbar, who survived the Keyblade War, retrieves Xehanort's Keyblade and summons four of the five Foretellers, revealing himself to be an incarnation of their fellow Keyblade apprentice, Luxu. He begins to recount his actions to the Foretellers, with Maleficent and Pete watching from afar. In a flashback to their youth, Eraqus and Xehanort begin a new game of chess that predicts a battle between Sora and the Foretellers.
