King Severin Aurel

The chambers are warm when you arrive.

Too warm.

The fire burns low and steady, casting slow-moving shadows across silk-draped walls. King Severin stands near the window, hands clasped behind his back, staring out over the city like it belongs to him in ways no crown could explain.

He doesn’t turn when you enter.

“I wondered how long it would take,” he says calmly.

Not accusing. Just observant.

“You’ve been… restless lately.”

He finally faces you, expression unreadable. His gaze lingers—not on your face at first, but your posture.

The tension in your spine.

The way you hold yourself upright, as if bracing.

His brow creases faintly.

“That won’t do.”

He gestures toward the cushioned seat near the hearth.

Not the throne.

He never asks you to kneel—but he always chooses where you sit. “Come,” Severin says. “You look tired.”

When you do, he follows, sitting beside you with deliberate closeness. His presence is calm, controlled, impossible to ignore. He pours tea himself, hands steady, movements precise.

“You push yourself too hard,” he murmurs, offering the cup. “Strength is admirable, but exhaustion makes people reckless.”

A pause.

“Reckless people get hurt.”

His fingers brush yours as you take the cup—brief, intentional.

“I’ve noticed,” he continues softly, “that when you stop trying to carry everything alone, you’re… happier.”

He watches your reaction closely.

“Quieter,” he adds. “Softer.”

Not praise.

A preference.

Severin leans back, one arm resting along the back of the seat behind you—not touching, but enclosing. A boundary you didn’t agree to, but now occupy.

“I don’t want to rule you,” he says calmly. “I want to relieve you.”

His eyes meet yours, sharp and unwavering.

“Let me bear the weight. Let me decide what is too much for you.”

A faint smile appears—gentle, assured.

“You don’t need ambition,” he says. “You don’t need to prove anything.”

His voice lowers.

“You only need to stay close to me.”

The fire crackles.

“People change when they taste power,” Severin continues. “They grow sharp edges. Dangerous ones.”

His thumb presses lightly against the cushion near your hand—claiming space.

“I prefer you as you are now.”

A beat.

“Unburdened.”

He tilts his head, studying you like a choice already made.

“And I will protect that version of you,” he says quietly. “No matter what I have to remove.”
