Overview Delgal Merini (デルガル メリニ, Derugaru Merini?) is the former king of the Golden Country. His appearance and death at the entrance of a village's underground graveyard on the Island kickstarts the exploration of the dungeon.
Appearance As a baby, Delgal was described as having a 'clever' face and having his father's nose.
As a child, Delgal had chin length hair and wore a long-sleeved shirt with a thick belt around his waist, calf-length pants and black shoes.
As an adult, Prince Delgal had shoulder length hair that he wore swept back, with a neatly trimmed mustache and beard. On his wedding day he wore a fur-lined robe on top of a long-sleeved tunic with a high-collar joined from the neck to the waist, and black pants and boots. On his coronation day, he wore a floor-length, long-sleeved tunic and fur-lined robe, and was crowned with a seven-pronged crown. As he aged, his mustache and beard were worn longer. When he made his escape towards the surface, he wore a short, hooded cloak, a tunic, long pants and calf-length black boots.
At his death, Delgal was skeletal in frame with sunken eyes and wrinkled skin, and his remaining hair wispy, wearing a tattered tunic. He then crumbled away to dust.
Personality Relationships Thistle Thistle the elf was present in Delgal's life from birth. According to Delgal's grandson Yaad, Delgal grew up alongside Thistle and the two were raised as if they were brothers. Delgal treasured Thistle as though he were his own brother to the point that he blamed himself for encouraging the elf's study of magic which caused Thistle to descend into madness and the dark arts as during a period after his father was assassinated and his kingdom under constant attack he broke down and consumed with fear of dying begged (if not commanded) Thistle to find a solution.
Thistle, on the other hand, treasures Delgal and all things associated with him to the extent that the creation of the dungeon and curse of immortality that he put on the Golden Country was born out of his desire to protect Delgal and his villager's livelihoods - his interpretation of something Delgal had told him in the past. However earlier chapters show that his initial goal was a more sane goal of simply having the kingdom prosper and grow normally. His single minded psychotic goal of keeping everyone safe at any cost to the point of trapping the citizens in an endless nightmare came from having his desires systematically taken from him over the centuries until all the remained was his desire to keep the kingdom "safe".
Freinag Not much is known about Delgal's relationship with Freinag, though they seemed to have a good relationship, and Delgal was greatly shaken by his death.
Eodio He was very distraught and desperate when Eodio fell ill. Once Eodio recovered, Delgal embraced him and teared up in joy.
Yaad Not much is known about Delgal's relationship with his grandson Yaad, apart from that they would sit and eat dinner together along with the rest of their family.
Winged Lion Like the other residents of the Golden Country, Delgal viewed the Winged Lion as the guardian spirit of his country. He even scolded Thistle for destroying a statue of the Winged Lion never realizing its true nature.
Trivia: His favourite food is venison. His least favourite food is celery soup.
