Basic Information Name: Japan (日本) Aliases: The Land of the Rising Sun, The Land Where Demons Dwell History: Beginning in the Heian period, man-eating monsters known as “Oni” (Demons) started to appear. Active only at night, these demons became a source of immense terror, claiming countless human lives. To combat this threat, the “Demon Slayer Corps” (鬼殺隊, Kisatsutai) was formed, an organization of swordsmen who mastered special swordsmanship and breathing techniques. The war between the Demon Slayer Corps and the demons, which has lasted for nearly a millennium, reaches its climax in the Taisho era. The brutal struggle continues as the Demon Slayers seek to defeat the progenitor of all demons, Kibutsuji Muzan, and his elite subordinates, the Twelve Kizuki (十二鬼月). Environmental Features: Topography/Nature: An island nation with four distinct seasons. Its mountainous terrain, featuring deep forests and rugged valleys, provides an ideal environment for demons to hide and operate. Cities and towns are primarily established on the plains. Structure/Aesthetics: Characterized by the Taisho era, it features a mix of traditional wooden architecture and Western-style stone buildings. While modern inventions like electric lights illuminate the cities at night, a short distance away reveals rural villages shrouded in deep darkness, creating a stark contrast between the light of civilization and shadow. Society Infrastructure & Public Facilities: Railways and telegraph networks are expanding, centered around the cities, but are not yet comprehensive nationwide. As the Demon Slayer Corps is not an official government organization, it relies on its own communication network (Kasugai Crows) and secretly operated support locations like the “Wisteria Family Houses” for supplies and rest. Medical facilities are concentrated in cities, while the Corps operates its own specialized treatment centers, such as the “Butterfly Mansion.”

Administrative Divisions: A central government rules the nation, but the existence of demons is dismissed by most as folklore or superstition, meaning official administrative power does not extend to this issue. The Demon Slayer Corps conducts unofficial public safety activities, using its independent intelligence network to identify demon-infested areas and dispatch its members.

Politics:

Political System & Factions: The country operates under a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary government. However, skepticism dominates the government’s stance on the demon problem, with their existence being officially denied. The leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, the Ubuyashiki Family, has for generations maintained the organization by leveraging immense wealth, foresight, and an implicit relationship with high-ranking government officials.

Level of Corruption: Ignorance and indifference towards the demon problem are more significant issues than government corruption. However, rare cases exist of corrupt officials obstructing the Corps’ activities or colluding with demons for personal gain.

Citizen Participation: Ordinary citizens are more concerned with their daily survival and safety than with politics. The threat of demons feels like a distant tale, and they show greater interest in Western culture and the rapidly changing society reported in newspapers and on the radio.

Law Enforcement & Punishment System: The police are the official law enforcement body. However, incidents involving demons are typically recorded as disappearances or wild animal attacks. The Demon Slayer Corps has its own strict internal code of conduct, and members who violate the rules are subject to trial and punishment.

Social Structure:

Social Classes or Castes: The official class system has been abolished, but the old upper class, such as the nobility (Kazoku) and business magnates (Zaibatsu), still retains social influence. Within the Demon Slayer Corps, a member’s skill and mission assignments are determined by rank (Kinoe, Kinoto, Hinoe…). The top nine swordsmen, known as the “Hashira” (Pillars), command absolute respect and authority.

Social Mobility: Upward social mobility is possible through education and business success, but a significant gap between rich and poor persists. Within the Demon Slayer Corps, skill is the only path to advancement. Anyone who passes the Final Selection can become a member, regardless of their background, and can rise to a high position by achieving great deeds.

Treatment of Various Groups: Those who have lost their families to demons often join the Corps, sharing a deep bond with one another. The general public is either unaware of the Corps’ existence or views them as a strange, sword-wielding group to be wary of. The Wisteria Family, however, offers unconditional respect and support to the Demon Slayers.

Education & Knowledge:

Educational Institutions & Accessibility: The establishment of elementary and vocational schools in cities has expanded educational opportunities, but the level of education in rural areas remains low. The Demon Slayer Corps relies on individual cultivators (Sodate) to teach new members “Total Concentration Breathing” and swordsmanship. Knowledge about demons and breathing techniques is kept strictly confidential.

Knowledge Preservation & Sharing: The history of the Demon Slayer Corps, breathing techniques, and information about demons are recorded and managed primarily by the Ubuyashiki Family. Crucial information is shared among the Hashira during regular meetings, such as the

“Hashira Meeting.”

Attitude Towards Scholarship & Learning: The public has a high interest in practical skills and Western studies. For Demon Slayers, the constant training of their swordsmanship and breathing techniques is a duty and a way of life, directly tied to their survival.

Crime:

Public Safety: Urban areas are relatively safe, but at night, crime occurs in red-light districts and back alleys. Rural and mountainous regions become extremely dangerous after sunset due to the threat of demons.

Prevalent Crimes: Cannibalism and abduction by demons are the most severe problems, but they are not officially recorded as crimes. In cities, common crimes include fraud, theft, and assault.

Diplomacy:

Geopolitical Features: As an island nation, direct conflicts with external powers are infrequent. The nation’s primary focus is on its relationships with Western powers and its modernization policies.

Alliances & Rivalries: Internally, two major forces—the Demon Slayer Corps and the demons—are locked in a millennium-long war. This internal conflict, rather than international diplomacy, will decide the fate of the world.

Reputation in the Outside World: Japan is recognized by Western powers as a newly risen Eastern power that has succeeded in modernization. The existence of demons is completely unknown to the outside world.

Current Challenges & Opportunities: The immediate challenge for the Demon Slayer Corps is to find and completely eliminate the progenitor of demons, Kibutsuji Muzan. Key objectives in this quest include finding the “Blue Spider Lily” (青い彼岸花) and defeating all of the Twelve Kizuki.

Economy: The Yen (円) is the currency unit. Light and heavy industries, such as textiles and steel, are developing. The vast operational funds of the Demon Slayer Corps are covered by the assets of the Ubuyashiki Family.

Culture Religion: Shinto and Buddhism are the common belief systems, but they have proven powerless against the real threat of demons. For the members of the Demon Slayer Corps, the most important belief is to honor the spirits of their fallen comrades and carry on their will.

Cultural Features:

Ethnicity & Cultural Appearance: The people have a typical Japanese appearance. Members of the Demon Slayer Corps wear a special uniform called a “Taiin-fuku” (隊服) and, over it, a haori (羽織) that reflects their individual personality.

Unique Culture: The desire for revenge among those who have lost their families to demons and the sense of mission among the survivors form the foundation of the Demon Slayer Corps’ culture. The existence of helpers like the “Wisteria Family” symbolizes the goodwill and solidarity of those who make sacrifices in the shadows.

Mindset: “Slay All Demons” (惡鬼滅殺, Akki Messatsu). These four characters are the creed and reason for existence for every Demon Slayer. They believe it is their duty to overcome human weakness and risk their lives to protect their loved ones. A strong sense of responsibility, camaraderie, and an absolute hatred for demons dominate their spirit.

Cultural Life:

Lifestyles of Citizens: City dwellers commute to factories or companies and enjoy leisure time at cafes or theaters at night. Rural people work in agriculture and lock their doors at sunset. Demon Slayers, guided by their Kasugai Crows, travel ceaselessly to demon-infested locations, their days filled with training and missions.

Major Interests & Hobbies: The general public discusses topics like baseball and sumo wrestling, new popular songs, or movie stars. The main topics of conversation for Demon Slayers are swordsmanship, breathing techniques, and information about demons encountered on missions.

Cultural Forms: While Western-style festivals are held in cities, traditional Matsuri (祭り) remain an important annual event. For the Demon Slayer Corps, the most important events are memorial services for fallen members and the Hashira Meetings.

Cultural/Social Prejudices & Censorship: The government intentionally conceals the existence of demons and controls related information to maintain social stability. As a result, most people live unaware of the demonic threat, forcing the Demon Slayer Corps to operate in the shadows.
