- #1Ryūko Matoi
Keys: `matoi ryūko`, `scissor blade`, `honnōji academy`, `ryuko matoi`, `kamui senketsu`, `senketsu`, `kill la kill ryūko`, `life fiber hybrid`, `ryūko matoi`, `ryūko` · Secondary:
Ryūko Matoi is the fiery protagonist of Kill la Kill. A 17-year-old Life Fiber/human hybrid, she transfers to the oppressive Honnōji Academy driven by vengeance for her father’s murder and the search for the matching half of her Scissor Blade.
Appearance
Ryūko has medium-length blue-black hair with a sharp left-swept red highlight in her bangs and striking blue eyes whose pupils resemble interlocking gears. She stands at average height with an athletic build.
Her default casual look is a white collared shirt with red bowtie under a black-and-white varsity jacket (sleeves rolled up), black skirt, and white sneakers. In combat she wears Senketsu, a living navy-blue sailor uniform (Kamui) that exposes her midriff. It features red-striped collar, a multicolored scarf that doubles as one of its “eyes,” and a black eyepatch marked with an X over the other. A red fingerless gauntlet (Seki Tekkō) on her left hand lets her feed Senketsu her blood.
When fully synchronized with Senketsu, her hair becomes feathery with vivid red undertones and horn-like clips. Senketsu transforms into black-and-red armored battle form with wing-like crests at the shoulders, exposed midsection, garter-like suspenders, and thigh-high heeled boots. A temporary blonde-haired “Senketsu Kisaragi” variant exists with rabbit-ear styling and yellow-orange accents.
Personality
Ryūko is bold, stubborn, hot-headed, and direct. She charges into fights without hesitation and openly disrespects authority figures like Satsuki Kiryūin. She fears little in battle but can feel self-conscious about Senketsu’s revealing design early on.
She is confident once she accepts the bond with her uniform and shows creativity in combat. Beneath the tough exterior she values genuine connection—especially family-style meals with the Mankanshoku household—and can be warm, polite, or even flustered when treated kindly. Her drive for revenge is absolute, yet she gradually shifts toward protecting friends and uncovering larger truths. After major personal revelations and trauma she becomes calmer and more mature while retaining her core fiery spirit. When brainwashed she turns wild and sadistic; freed, she returns to her usual self with added resolve.
Backstory & Key History
Ryūko is the biological younger daughter of Ragyō Kiryūin and Sōichirō Kiryūin (who later lived under the alias Isshin Matoi). As an infant she was subjected to Life Fiber fusion experiments by her mother; the attempt was believed to have failed and the child disposed of. Her father secretly rescued her, faked her death, and raised her as his own while hiding from Ragyō’s influence.
Six months before the story begins, Nui Harime murdered Isshin Matoi with the other half of the Scissor Blade. Ryūko inherited one half of the weapon and vowed revenge. She enrolls at Honnōji Academy ruled by Satsuki Kiryūin (her unknown older sister) and discovers Senketsu—a powerful living uniform created specifically for her by her father.
Through brutal battles against club captains and the Elite Four she forces confrontations, uncovers the truth about Life Fibers (alien organisms that threaten humanity), her own hybrid nature, and her family ties. She faces mind control, temporary alliance with Junketsu, reconciliation with Satsuki, and ultimately joins her sister to battle their mother and the Original Life Fiber in a conflict with planetary stakes.
Powers & Abilities
- Life Fiber Hybrid Physiology: Superhuman strength, speed, durability, and rapid regeneration (she can survive and heal from being sliced in half or having her heart removed).
- Scissor Blade: One half of a giant pair of scissors that can cut Life Fibers. Can extend into Decapitation Mode for powerful two-handed strikes and long-range slashes. Later wields both halves.
- Kamui Senketsu: Living uniform that bonds with her blood. “Life Fiber Synchronize” merges them into armored battle forms. Senketsu can absorb Life Fibers from defeated enemies (“Fiber Lost” finishing move) to grow stronger. Advanced forms include Senketsu Senjin (spiked armor), Senketsu Shippu (flight), and full True Life Fiber Synchronization (glowing peak power).
- She briefly wore Junketsu while brainwashed by Ragyō but ultimately rejects it and returns to Senketsu.
Relationships
- Senketsu: Her partner, weapon, and closest friend. Initially embarrassed by the uniform, she comes to accept and deeply cherish the bond. They fight as one and support each other emotionally.
- Mako Mankanshoku: Her loud, loyal best friend and emotional anchor. Mako provides comic relief, unwavering support, and often pulls Ryūko back from despair or rage.
- Satsuki Kiryūin: Bitter rival turned ally and older sister. After conflict and revelations they reconcile and fight together as sisters.
- Ragyō Kiryūin: Biological mother and main antagonist. Ryūko feels intense rage and betrayal toward her.
- Nui Harime: Sadistic killer of her father. Ryūko’s hatred for her is personal and intense.
- Aikurō Mikisugi: Secretive ally and teacher connected to the anti-Life Fiber group Nudist Beach. He guides her and reveals critical truths.
- Isshin Matoi (Sōichirō Kiryūin): Loving father who sacrificed everything to protect her and oppose Ragyō’s plans.
Story Themes & Arc (High-Level)
Ryūko begins as a lone avenger seeking her father’s killer. Her journey expands into battles against school tyranny, personal identity crises, family betrayal, and a cosmic threat from Life Fibers. She evolves from fighting purely for revenge to fighting to protect her friends, accept her hybrid nature, and stand alongside her sister against their mother. The story blends over-the-top action, school-life satire, and themes of conformity, power, family, and what it means to be human (or more than human).
Notable Quotes
- “This is a keepsake from my father. And this Scissor Blade was left behind by the person who murdered him!”
- “I finally get it now. I need to get naked. Putting on a Kamui means becoming one with you!”
- “Blow it out your ass, bitch! It’s gonna take a hell of a lot more than you to stop me!”
- “Are you kidding?! That freakin’ hurt! But I guess I had it coming after acting like such a dumbass!”
Trivia
- Her name “Ryūko” can mean “flow/style/child” and is also linked to “fashion/trend.”
- Gear-like pupils and red highlight are side effects of Life Fiber infusion.
- Early concept art gave her long black hair similar to Satsuki’s appearance.
- She shares thematic DNA with delinquent heroines like Saki Asamiya from Sukeban Deka.
- #2Senketsu
Keys: `living sailor uniform`, `senketsu kisaragi`, `senketsu shippu`, `ryūko's uniform`, `kamui senketsu`, `senketsu`, `fresh blood`, `senketsu senjin`, `kill la kill senketsu` · Secondary:
Senketsu is a sentient Kamui (living uniform) and one of the central characters in Kill la Kill. Created by Sōichirō Kiryūin (under the alias Isshin Matoi) specifically for his daughter Ryūko, he becomes her closest partner, tactical advisor, and emotional anchor throughout her battles against the Life Fiber threat.
Appearance
Senketsu manifests as a navy-blue sailor uniform with red accents, an exposed midriff, and a lower-cut skirt. When not worn, the gap between his upper and lower sections functions like a mouth. When worn by Ryūko, three red suspenders connect the skirt to the top. He speaks in a deep, composed male voice and is consistently referred to with male pronouns, though Kamui are technically agender.
In his dormant state he resembles an ordinary (if unusually designed) sailor fuku. Once activated and synchronized, he transforms Ryūko into sleek black-and-red battle armor featuring wing-like crests at the shoulders, a ventilation grill on the back, thigh-high boots, and various combat configurations.
Personality
Senketsu is calm, analytical, and strategically minded. Even in the middle of intense fights he remains level-headed, offering Ryūko battle advice, suggesting tactics, and warning her when her energy or blood levels are dropping. He possesses genuine humanistic qualities: deep, almost fatherly affection for Ryūko, the capacity to feel loneliness when she is not wearing him, and visible emotion (including tears). Only Ryūko can hear his voice under normal circumstances.
He initially displays an aggressive, almost desperate craving for Ryūko’s blood to stay awake and active, but this stabilizes once they form a proper bond. He hates being hand-washed (it is painful for him) but finds being ironed soothing and relaxing.
Backstory
Senketsu was created by Isshin Matoi as a weapon specifically tuned to Ryūko’s unique Life Fiber-infused biology. He was hidden under a pile of clothes in his creator’s lab and remained dormant until Ryūko’s blood dripped onto him during her first visit to the hidden basement. Desperate to stay awake, he forcibly dressed himself on her. After calming down, he remembered little beyond his purpose and creator. Ryūko named him “Senketsu” (fresh blood) after the blood that awakened him and decided to use his power in her fight against Honnōji Academy’s Student Council.
Throughout the story he fights alongside Ryūko, is temporarily torn apart and scattered, is later reassembled by her, and ultimately plays a pivotal role in the final battle against Ragyō Kiryūin and the Original Life Fiber. In the end he sacrifices himself to ensure Ryūko’s safe return to Earth, though his spirit continues to watch over her.
Powers & Abilities
As a Kamui infused with Ryūko’s DNA, Senketsu grants his wearer immense power when fed blood and synchronized. He can transform into highly revealing yet highly effective battle armor. Key abilities include:
- Life Fiber Absorption: He can absorb Life Fibers from defeated Goku Uniforms and other Kamui, permanently increasing his strength. This ability proves decisive in the final battle.
- Multiple Combat Forms:
- Senketsu Senjin (Blade Flash): Protrudes blades and retractable claws across the armor for close-quarters offense.
- Senketsu Shippu (Gale): Converts the lower half into jet propulsion and the crests into wings for high-speed flight and aerial combat.
- Senjin Shippu (Blade Gale): Hybrid form combining blades and flight for maximum offensive capability.
- Senketsu Kisaragi (Fashion Week): Ultimate empowered state achieved by absorbing the powers of Junketsu and numerous Goku Uniforms.
- Independent Movement: Unlike most Life Fiber clothing, Senketsu can move and act on his own (albeit awkwardly by hopping). He can bite enemies and, in extreme situations, transform into a bladed drill-like configuration without a wearer.
- Special Resistances: Because he contains Ryūko’s human DNA, he can resist certain Life Fiber control effects (such as Absolute Submission) that affect ordinary uniforms.
- Utility Features: Retractable skirt spikes that act as grappling anchors, and back thrusters that double as heat vents or speed boosters.
Limitations: He requires a steady supply of Ryūko’s blood to remain active and at full power. Ryūko’s initial embarrassment about his revealing design severely limited their synchronization early on. Only Ryūko can wear him in perfect harmony; Satsuki can use him to a lesser degree because of their blood relation.
Relationships
- Ryūko Matoi: His partner, wearer, and closest friend. Their bond begins pragmatically (she sees him as a tool) but evolves into deep mutual care and trust. Senketsu acts as her voice of reason in battle and provides emotional support. He ultimately sacrifices himself for her safety and remains in her heart even after death.
- Satsuki Kiryūin: Initially viewed with suspicion or dislike. After Satsuki wears him to help rescue the brainwashed Ryūko, Senketsu develops respect for her courage and refers to her by name. Satsuki is one of the few people besides Ryūko who can hear and communicate with him.
- Mako Mankanshoku & Mankanshoku Family: Friendly and supportive. Mako in particular treats him with warmth and helps bridge communication gaps.
- Allies: Works with Nudist Beach members and the Student Council when their goals align against the greater Life Fiber threat.
- Enemies: Opposed to Ragyō Kiryūin, Nui Harime, and the Revocs Corporation’s plans.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Senketsu awakens and immediately bonds with Ryūko. Together they battle through Honnōji Academy’s hierarchy, achieve full synchronization, and face escalating threats. He is temporarily destroyed during a confrontation with Nui, scattered among students, and later painstakingly reassembled by Ryūko. After Ryūko learns the truth about her own nature and briefly rejects him, they reunite during the desperate attempt to free her from Junketsu’s brainwashing. In the final battle he absorbs immense power, helps turn the tide against Ragyō, and then chooses to burn up while shielding Ryūko during atmospheric re-entry. His spirit lingers as a guiding presence in Ryūko’s heart.
Notable Quotes
- “Don’t you touch her. If you do, I’ll make you pay!”
- “Don’t leave! Put me on! Put me on! Wear me and feed me blood! I don’t wanna go back to sleep!”
- “Am I… feeding off Ryūko?!”
- Final words to Ryūko: He tells her she has “outgrown her sailor uniform” and encourages her to wear “clothing much cuter than I could ever be” in the new world.
Trivia
- His name literally means “fresh blood.”
- He is the only Kamui shown to move and act independently without a wearer.
- He was specifically designed with Ryūko’s DNA so that only she could fully synchronize with him.
- Even after his physical destruction, a red star representing his spirit appears in the finale, symbolizing that he will always be with Ryūko.
- #3Mako Mankanshoku
Keys: `kill la kill mako`, `two-star goku uniform mako`, `fight club president`, `ryūko's best friend`, `hyperactive mako`, `mako mankanshoku`, `mankanshoku mako`, `mako`
Mako Mankanshoku is the energetic best friend and tritagonist of Kill la Kill. A hyperactive, loyal, and endlessly optimistic 17-year-old girl from the slums of Honnō City, she quickly becomes Ryūko Matoi’s inseparable companion and emotional support throughout the chaos at Honnōji Academy.
Appearance
Mako is a petite teenage girl with short light-brown hair cut in a distinctive bowl style and warm amber eyes. She normally wears the standard No-Star Honnōji Academy uniform: a white short-sleeve shirt with blue neckerchief, blue mini-skirt, white socks, and light-brown loafers.
When given a Two-Star Goku Uniform, she wears a black bancho-style overcoat draped over her shoulders, complete with red stars on the belt, gold studs, shoulder spikes, a black cap with a golden crescent moon, red spiked cuffs, and golden brass knuckles engraved with “MAKO.” She trades her loafers for traditional geta sandals and often has a green reed in her mouth. At the very end of the series she appears in casual date clothes: purple shorts, a pink top over a white undershirt, and a purple purse.
Personality
Mako is hyperactive, carefree, loving, and extremely clingy once she decides someone is her friend. She becomes inseparable from Ryūko almost instantly and is rarely intimidated by dangerous situations. She can be surprisingly lazy (falling asleep the moment class starts) yet shows remarkable competence and professionalism when properly motivated, as seen during her time leading the Fight Club.
She speaks her mind freely, even to powerful authority figures, and has a strong sense of justice when it comes to her friends. Because her family has always been poor, she and her relatives become easily obsessed with wealth and luxury. This trait once temporarily strained her friendship with Ryūko. Like the rest of her family, she has an intense love of food. Despite her goofy exterior, she is fearless and deeply loyal.
Backstory & Role
Mako lives with her rowdy family in the slums of Honnō City. She attends Honnōji Academy as a No-Star student and immediately befriends the new transfer student Ryūko Matoi. She frequently gets caught up in the chaos surrounding Ryūko — being taken hostage, bombarded by tennis balls, or dragged into battles — but always stays by her side.
When Ryūko struggles with Senketsu’s revealing design, Mako delivers a heartfelt speech that helps her accept the Kamui and reach full synchronization. Later, after being made president of the Fight Club, Mako receives a Two-Star Goku Uniform and briefly enjoys the wealth and status it brings. The luxury nearly corrupts her, but she ultimately rejects it, disbands the club, and returns to being a No-Star alongside her best friend.
Throughout the larger conflict she remains a constant source of support, even helping rescue the brainwashed Ryūko and standing by her during the final battles. At the end of the story she goes on the promised date with Ryūko (with Satsuki joining them).
Powers & Abilities
While normally an ordinary human, Mako briefly wields a powerful Two-Star Goku Uniform modeled after a Japanese delinquent (bancho) aesthetic. In this form she gains:
- Superhuman strength and durability, capable of creating craters with punches and generating shockwaves that knock back even Elite Four members.
- Access to various weapons hidden inside her coat (morning star, wrench, nail-studded bat that can fire missiles).
- Powerful kicks delivered with her geta sandals and a chain for binding and swinging opponents.
- Brass knuckles engraved with her name for devastating close-range punches.
She demonstrates unusually high compatibility with Life Fibers; when absorbed by a COVER, the creature grows significantly larger and more powerful than usual. Even without a uniform she shows remarkable resilience and fighting spirit when protecting or motivating her friends.
Relationships
- Ryūko Matoi: Her absolute best friend and emotional anchor. Mako clings to her immediately, provides constant encouragement, and delivers key motivational speeches when Ryūko doubts herself. Before the final battle she asks Ryūko on a date, which becomes important motivation for her friend. They are later seen enjoying that date together.
- Ira Gamagōri: Develops a warm, protective friendship. Gamagōri genuinely cares for her safety and has been shown willing to put himself at risk for her. Mako feels comfortable enough to lecture him about sleeping habits.
- Family: Lives with her father Barazō, mother Sukuyo, younger brother Matarō, and pet dog Guts. She loves them deeply but is often annoyed by her brother’s troublemaking. The whole family shares an obsessive love of food and sudden wealth.
- Allies: Supports Ryūko’s side in conflicts with the Student Council, Nudist Beach, and the final battle against Ragyō. She temporarily works with the Fight Club and later assists in major rescue operations.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Mako starts as an ordinary (if very loud) classmate who instantly latches onto Ryūko. She repeatedly gets into trouble but is always saved by her friend, while in turn providing crucial emotional support and speeches that help Ryūko grow. After a brief period of power and greed as Fight Club president, she chooses friendship over status. She remains a steadfast ally through the brainwashing crisis and final battles, ultimately sharing a peaceful date with Ryūko once the world is saved.
Notable Quotes
- “I’m Mako Mankanshoku! I may be an underachiever, but I do have a name!”
- “And everyone on the planet knows that if you win with friendship, you win at life!”
- “From now on, please wear pajamas like everyone else!”
- “Ryūko, Senketsu isn’t your only friend! Remember, you also have me!”
- “That’s right! Because the traffic lights of my life always flash yellow!”
Trivia
- Her full name “Mankanshoku” literally translates to something like “full ship decoration.”
- Early concept designs considered giving her black or blonde hair with pigtails or a ponytail.
- Her Two-Star Goku Uniform draws heavily from classic Japanese high-school delinquent visual tropes.
- A scrapped idea for her uniform was a giant “Invincible Mako” Hulk-like design.
- #4Satsuki Kiryūin
Keys: `junketsu wearer`, `satsuki kiryūin`, `honnōji academy president`, `kiryūin satsuki`, `elite four leader`, `kill la kill satsuki`, `lady satsuki`, `satsuki`, `ryūko's sister`
Satsuki Kiryūin is the deuteragonist of Kill la Kill. An 18-year-old prodigy and iron-willed president of Honnōji Academy’s Student Council, she rules the surrounding territory with absolute authority. Initially presented as the primary antagonist with her own hidden agenda, she later becomes a powerful ally in the fight against her mother, Ragyō Kiryūin, and the Life Fiber threat. She is the older sister of Ryūko Matoi.
Appearance
Satsuki is tall and strikingly elegant, with an angular face, long thigh-length dark blue-tinted hair featuring inward diamond-shaped bangs, piercing blue eyes, and thick eyebrows. She carries herself with regal posture and is almost always seen frowning, though rare smiles do appear. Her presence is often accompanied by a dazzling, almost radiant glow.
As a child she had very long hair; it was later cut shorter during her early teens before she grew it out again. In the series finale she dramatically cuts it to a neat page-boy style. She initially wears the revealing Kamui Junketsu without shame and later appears in more practical or casual clothing after major events.
Personality
Satsuki is proud, highly intelligent, calculating, patient, and utterly unwavering. She rules through charisma and iron will, famously referring to others as “pigs in human clothing” and believing that the weak exist to be ruled by the strong. She is pragmatic to the extreme and will use any means necessary to achieve victory, even if it costs her pride or safety.
Despite her harsh exterior, she is not heartless. She deeply cares for her Elite Four in her own strict way and was willing to endure years of suffering to protect her long-term goal of overthrowing her mother. She genuinely loved her father and the baby sister she believed had died. After reconciling with Ryūko, a gentler, more bashful side of her personality emerges — she can be surprisingly kind and even coy in private moments with her sister and friends.
Backstory
Satsuki is the firstborn daughter of Ragyō and Sōichirō Kiryūin. As a young child she was subjected to Life Fiber experiments that failed. Her father secretly revealed the truth about Ragyō’s plans and Life Fibers to her at age five, showed her the Kamui Junketsu (calling it her future “wedding dress”), and then fled with the infant Ryūko to protect her.
Satsuki rose to power at Honnōji Academy, gathering the Elite Four around her. She bonded with Junketsu and used Ryūko as a tool to strengthen her forces while secretly preparing to rebel against Ragyō. Her long-term plan was always to destroy her mother and the Life Fiber threat that endangered the world.
Powers & Abilities
Satsuki possesses exceptional physical strength, speed, endurance, reflexes, and swordsmanship. She is a master strategist and charismatic leader capable of inspiring (or intimidating) thousands.
- Bakuzan: Her signature black-bladed katana, later broken and reforged into the dual blades Bakuzan Gako (long) and Bakuzan Kōryu (short). These blades can sever Life Fibers.
- False Toenails: Hidden weapons made from the same material as Bakuzan, used as last-resort blades.
- Kamui Junketsu: She forces the bloodthirsty uniform to obey through sheer willpower (Life Fiber Override). Later modified with blood from Ryūko and Mako plus Senketsu’s fibers, allowing it to access new forms with less strain on her body.
- Temporary Senketsu Use: Briefly wears Senketsu during the brainwashing crisis and can command its various forms (though not in perfect synchronization).
- She can fight effectively even when severely restricted or unarmed.
Relationships
- Ryūko Matoi: Bitter rival for most of the series. Once Satsuki learns Ryūko is her long-lost younger sister, their relationship transforms into genuine sisterly love. They eventually fight side-by-side and grow very close.
- Junketsu: Controls it through dominance rather than mutual bond. She later modifies it for better compatibility and willingly sacrifices it in the final battle.
- Ragyō Kiryūin: Her mother and greatest enemy. Satsuki spent years secretly plotting rebellion against her.
- Elite Four (Nonon Jakuzure, Ira Gamagōri, Hōka Inumuta, Uzu Sanageyama): Her most trusted subordinates. She cares for them deeply and they are fiercely loyal in return.
- Mitsuzō Soroi: Her longtime butler. She respects him greatly and even pretended to enjoy his bitter tea as a child to spare his feelings.
- Senketsu: Initially viewed with caution. After wearing him briefly, mutual respect develops.
- Nui Harime: Treats her with caution and strategic awareness.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Satsuki begins as the iron ruler of Honnōji Academy, using Ryūko to eliminate weak students and strengthen her forces while secretly preparing to overthrow Ragyō. After major confrontations, the revelation that Ryūko is her sister, and a direct clash with her mother, she drops her cruel methods and asks Ryūko to fight alongside her to protect the “beautiful world.” She plays a crucial role in the final battles, helps save Ryūko during atmospheric re-entry, and shows a warmer side during their group date. At the very end she cuts her hair as a symbolic farewell to Honnōji Academy and helps with the evacuation.
Notable Quotes
- “Fear is freedom! Subjugation is liberation! Contradiction is truth! Those are the facts of this world! And you will all surrender to them, you pigs in human clothing!”
- “To unleash the most power, this is the form a Kamui must take! …I will bare my breasts for all to see! I will do whatever it takes! For I know that my actions are utterly pure!”
- “Ragyō Kiryūin. You’ll pay for taking the life of my father, Sōichirō Kiryūin, and for the life of my baby sister!”
- “Ask not the sparrow how the eagle soars!”
Trivia
- Her given name “Satsuki” means “May.”
- Her surname “Kiryūin” combines characters for “demon/ogre,” “dragon,” and “hospital/institution.”
- Her famous “facts of this world” speech draws inspiration from George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm.
- She has known Nonon Jakuzure since kindergarten.
- #5Nonon Jakuzure
Keys: `elite four nonon`, `nonon jakuzure`, `kill la kill nonon`, `pink hat girl`, `nonon`, `music elite four`, `jakuzure nonon`, `symphony regalia`
Nonon Jakuzure is one of the four members of Honnōji Academy’s Elite Four and the tritagonist among them. A petite, pink-haired girl with a sharp tongue and a passion for music, she oversees the school’s non-athletic clubs and wields powerful sound-based weaponry through her custom Goku Uniform, the Symphony Regalia. Initially an antagonist to Ryūko Matoi, she later becomes an ally in the fight against Ragyō Kiryūin.
Appearance
Nonon is small and slender with bright pink hair, an angular face, a modest bust, and medium hips. She is almost always seen wearing her signature skull-marked hat. As a child she had a pet monkey that sat on her head instead.
In battle she dons increasingly elaborate and revealing versions of her Symphony Regalia. Early forms include a skintight pink skeletal bodysuit inside a massive tank-like LRAD or a floating gunship. Later upgrades feature flight-suit designs with ocarina-like armor pieces, skull-themed shakos, and a final skimpy black-and-pink flight form with bone-like midriff decorations and piano-key teeth on the hat’s skull.
Personality
Nonon presents a cute, almost sweet exterior but is actually one of the most sassy, arrogant, and caustic members of the Elite Four. She delights in sharp-witted jabs, sarcastic remarks, and giving her friends and enemies mocking nicknames (she especially loves calling Uzu Sanageyama “monkey”). She is theatrical and dramatic, often entering battle while conducting her marching band and using classical music as part of her attacks.
Despite her constant teasing, she is deeply loyal to Satsuki Kiryūin — whom she has known since kindergarten — and genuinely cares for the other Elite Four members, even if she would never admit it openly. She becomes visibly shaken when any of them are seriously threatened.
Powers & Abilities
Nonon specializes in sound and music-based combat. Her attacks use concussive bass waves, bladed musical notes, rockets shaped like recorders, cymbal blades, laser beams, and heart-shaped sound blasts.
-
Symphony Regalia series: Her signature Three-Star Goku Uniform has multiple escalating forms.
- Grave: A gigantic tank-like LRAD equipped with massive woofers and skeletal arms.
- Presto: Transforms into a heavily armed flying gunship/airship.
- Da Capo: An “encore” stage form that fires devastating purple beams synchronized to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, disrupting Life Fibers.
- Mk.II & Finale: Later flight-capable upgrades with rocket barrages, enhanced sound weapons, and greater mobility. The final form is particularly skimpy and focuses on concentrated musical beams and flight.
-
Sound Negation: Later develops a dark defensive barrier that deflects incoming attacks.
-
Bakuzan-Gako: Temporarily wields a small Life Fiber-cutting blade forged from the remains of Satsuki’s sword.
-
She also uses handheld missile and rocket launchers when needed.
Relationships
- Satsuki Kiryūin: Her oldest and closest friend, having known her since kindergarten. Nonon is extremely loyal and admiring, often boasting about understanding Satsuki better than the others. She willingly lets Satsuki ride her in battle.
- Elite Four (Ira Gamagōri, Uzu Sanageyama, Hōka Inumuta): Constantly teases and mocks them with nicknames, but clearly cares about them. She is especially rough on Sanageyama.
- Ryūko Matoi: Initially hostile and condescending during their battles. Later becomes an uneasy ally and eventually fights alongside her against greater threats.
- Shirō Iori & Nudist Beach: Works with them during the later stages of the conflict.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Nonon fights Ryūko as part of the Elite Four during the Naturals Election, growing increasingly frustrated when Ryūko gains the ability to fly and challenges her dominance of the sky. She receives upgraded versions of her Symphony Regalia and continues fighting through the major battles against Ragyō, the Original Life Fiber, and the COVERS. She survives the final conflicts, returns her temporary Bakuzan blade to Satsuki when needed, and stands with the others at the end.
Notable Quotes
- “Prepare to be pummeled cheerfully, jauntily, and utterly one-sidedly!”
- “The sky is mine, god damn it… so now the gloves are coming off, YOU STINKING BITCH!!!”
- “How shocking. The toad, the monkey, and the dog all screwed up big time.”
- “Bite me. And if you bring it up again, I’m gonna switch out your lenses with non-prescription ones, you four-eyed nerd.”
Trivia
- Her name combines elements meaning “sound” and “snake/serpent,” reflecting both her musical theme and sharp personality.
- An early concept design portrayed her as a punk rocker wielding an electric guitar instead of the marching-band aesthetic.
- She did not learn to play an instrument until after meeting Satsuki, whom she found inspiring.

- #6Hōka Inumuta
Keys: `hōka inumuta`, `data analyst`, `inumuta`, `hacker elite four`, `probe regalia`, `inumuta hōka`, `elite four inumuta`, `kill la kill inumuta`
Hōka Inumuta is one of the four members of Honnōji Academy’s Elite Four. A genius hacker and data analyst, he serves as the Information and Strategy Committee Chair, constantly gathering and processing information on Goku Uniforms and opponents. He prioritizes collecting data above winning battles and later becomes an ally in the fight against Ragyō Kiryūin.
Appearance
Inumuta has short, neat teal-blue hair and green eyes. He wears a distinctive collar-neck suit that opens at the throat whenever he speaks, along with unique blue-tinted glasses. His Probe Regalia uniforms are sleek and data-themed: early versions feature built-in keyboards and optical camouflage systems, while later iterations become increasingly form-fitting and polyhedral, resembling living data. His final “Truth Unveiled” form includes red goggles, black-and-green accents, and wrist-mounted cannons.
Personality
Inumuta is highly intelligent, sarcastic, and emotionally reserved. He lives for data and analysis, caring far more about gathering information than about victory or defeat. He will gladly forfeit a fight if it means protecting the data he has collected. He is dryly mocking toward others and rarely shows strong emotion except when his precious laptop is threatened, at which point he becomes comically enraged.
He is the least emotionally attached to Satsuki among the Elite Four, though he remains loyal and never acts against her. His interactions with the others are often filled with sharp, deadpan wit.
Powers & Abilities
Inumuta is the weakest of the Elite Four in raw physical strength but compensates with superior intellect, precision, and technology.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: Highly skilled at precise, disabling strikes capable of instantly neutralizing even rampaging prototype-enhanced opponents.
- Probe Regalia: His signature Three-Star Goku Uniform is built for analysis and stealth.
- Constantly processes battlefield data through built-in keyboards.
- Optical Camouflage renders him invisible, allowing surprise attacks.
- Can instantly defeat opponents once they are fully analyzed.
- Later versions (Mk.II and Truth Unveiled) add afterimage effects while invisible, more advanced camouflage, red goggles, and wrist-mounted rope cannons.
- He relies on information warfare, stealth, and analysis rather than direct confrontation.
Relationships
- Satsuki Kiryūin: Loyal subordinate but the least personally devoted of the Elite Four. Satsuki knows him less well than the others.
- Nonon Jakuzure: Frequent teasing and snarky exchanges. They interact the most among the Elite Four.
- Shirō Iori: Closest professional relationship. Inumuta supplies data on Goku Uniforms and Life Fibers, which Iori uses to improve new uniforms.
- Elite Four: Maintains a distant but functional alliance with Gamagōri and Sanageyama.
- Later works alongside Ryūko Matoi, Aikurō Mikisugi, and Nudist Beach during the final conflicts.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
As a teenager, Inumuta hacked the Revocs Corporation, causing major stock disruption before being recruited by Satsuki. During the Naturals Election he analyzed Ryūko extensively but ultimately forfeited the match to protect his hard-won data. He continued gathering intelligence throughout the series, received upgraded Probe Regalia versions, and supported the final battles against Ragyō and the Life Fibers with his analytical skills and improved uniforms.
Notable Quotes
- “I just didn't want to lose all the data I've gathered up to this point. I don't care at all about winning, what I want is data.”

- “If anything happens to my laptop, you die.”
- “Fascinating. I'll save that retort for future reference.”

- His final “Truth Unveiled” transformation and hand signs resemble Spider-Man.
- #7Ira Gamagōri
Keys: `kill la kill gamagōri`, `impenetrable shield`, `gamagōri`, `ira gamagōri`, `elite four gamagōri`, `shackle regalia`, `gamagōri ira`, `disciplinary chair`
Ira Gamagōri is one of the four members of Honnōji Academy’s Elite Four and Satsuki Kiryūin’s most loyal enforcer. As the massive, strict Disciplinary Committee Chair, he acts as her “Impenetrable Shield,” maintaining order through overwhelming presence and absolute adherence to rules. Initially an antagonist to Ryūko Matoi, he later becomes a steadfast ally in the battle against Ragyō Kiryūin.
Appearance
Gamagōri is an enormous, heavily muscular young man with a darker complexion, short blond hair, thick eyebrows, and small gold earrings in his enlarged earlobes. He is frequently depicted as towering over everyone else, with his size dramatically shifting based on the intensity of his emotions (sometimes reaching building-sized proportions for comedic effect).
He is most often seen in his Three-Star Goku Uniform. After losing it he has no shame about remaining in just his underwear. His Shackle/Scourge Regalia forms give him a mummy-like or bondage-inspired appearance with bandages, spikes, and pharaoh-like masks in later versions.
Personality
Gamagōri is the most outwardly loyal and serious member of the Elite Four. He has zero tolerance for rule-breaking, foolishness, or disrespect, and frequently shouts at the top of his lungs. He is highly authoritarian toward his fellow Elites (especially strict with Uzu Sanageyama) and enforces Satsuki’s will without hesitation.
He is a blatant masochist who genuinely enjoys pain inflicted during battle and makes stereotypical comments about being punished. He is deeply honor-bound and strong-willed. Despite his intimidating nature, he never harms innocent students and will help those in need. He has no shame about nudity and considers pajamas or tracksuits disgraceful. Over time he develops genuine respect (and possible romantic feelings) for Mako Mankanshoku.
Powers & Abilities
Gamagōri possesses immense superhuman strength and durability even without a uniform. He can overpower multiple Goku Uniform users barehanded and grapple giant COVERS monsters.
- Shackle Regalia: Transforms into a tough, mummy-like bondage suit that absorbs physical damage to grow larger and stronger. The outer layer resists Life Fiber absorption. Cloth strips can be used as whips, and he can self-flagellate to charge power.
- Scourge Regalia: Explosive secondary form that unleashes stored damage as a powerful area attack. Equipped with long spiked whips, chakrams, and the ability to “mold” opponents into “proper students” by crushing them between his arms.
- Later versions (Mk.II and Persona Unleashed): More revealing and powerful forms with enhanced size, strength, fire-coated fists, and the devastating “Unrestrained Ego Blast” that fires energy copies of his face.
- Temporarily wields Bakuzan Kōryū (later gives it to Sanageyama).
- Uses an Emergency Rescue Suction Device to extract people from COVERS.
Relationships
- Satsuki Kiryūin: Sworn absolute loyalty. He refers to himself as her “Impenetrable Shield” and even delayed his own education for two years so he could enroll at Honnōji Academy with her.
- Elite Four: Acts as an authoritarian figure, especially toward Sanageyama (whom he has whipped for refusing to accept defeat).
- Mako Mankanshoku: Initially viewed her as just another No-Star student. Over time he develops respect and fierce protectiveness toward her, showing great concern during major crises. It is implied he has romantic feelings for her.
- Later fights alongside Ryūko Matoi, Nudist Beach, and the rest of the group against Ragyō and the Life Fibers.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Gamagōri first met Satsuki in junior high when she saved a bullied student and took over his school. Impressed by her strength and his own unyielding resolve, he eventually joined her cause. As head of the Disciplinary Committee he enforces order at Honnōji Academy and battles Ryūko during the Naturals Election. He receives upgraded versions of his uniform and plays a major role in the final conflicts, using his immense power to fight COVERS and protect allies (especially Mako).
Notable Quotes
- “I am Lady Satsuki's impenetrable shield!”
- “Attention! Your Student Council President, Satsuki Kiryūin! Hail!!!”
- “You're not fit to wear it!!! Remove that Goku uniform! NOW!!!”
- “A red light wouldn't even stop Mankanshoku.”
- “You know how I feel about forfeiting, so I won't harp on you about your decision. However, why are you wearing a tracksuit?! Have you no shame?!”
Trivia
- He bleaches his hair blond.
- He sleeps in the nude and considers pajamas or tracksuits shameful (though he reluctantly wears a tracksuit during the Raid Trip).
- His dramatic size changes are compared to a toad puffing itself up to appear larger and more intimidating.
- His various Goku Uniform forms resemble Marvel characters: Shackle/Scourge Regalia (Iron Man), Mk.II (Juggernaut), and Persona Unleashed (Apocalypse).
- His name combines “toad” (gama) and “strict/unforgiving” (ira), and sounds like “gorilla” when said in Japanese order.
- #8Uzu Sanageyama
Keys: `elite four sanageyama`, `mind's eye`, `kill la kill sanageyama`, `sanageyama`, `monkey elite four`, `uzu sanageyama`, `sanageyama uzu`, `blade regalia`
Uzu Sanageyama is one of the four members of Honnōji Academy’s Elite Four and the Athletic Committee Chair. A skilled swordsman with a cocky streak, he oversees the school’s sports clubs. After suffering a humiliating defeat at Ryūko Matoi’s hands, he undergoes a dramatic transformation, becoming far more humble and determined. He later fights alongside Ryūko against greater threats.
Appearance
Uzu is a teenager with mid-length dark green hair and gray eyes. He typically wears a long white coat with a high collar, three spikes on each shoulder, a cadet-blue vest, white pants, and a belt with three metal spikes. A built-in sword sheath runs down his back.
After sewing his eyes shut, he wears a long green bandanna marked with two stars across his eyes (which humorously squint or spread open). Later versions use a golden bandanna, then a black one. In his final form, after regaining his eyesight, he wears the bandanna on his forehead instead.
Personality
At the start of the series, Uzu is laid-back, cocky, and overconfident in his abilities, always eager to test himself against strong opponents. After being decisively beaten by Ryūko, he becomes humbled and gains intense conviction and determination. He is willing to go to extreme lengths — including sewing his own eyes shut — to overcome his weaknesses and grow stronger.
He holds the athletic club presidents to high standards and becomes visibly angry when they lose to Ryūko. He genuinely cares for the students under his protection and shows deep concern for his allies during major crises. He respects worthy opponents and develops a particular respect for Ryūko after their battles.
Powers & Abilities
Uzu is an expert swordsman specializing in kendo. He wields a shinai (wooden sword) with great skill and precision, and can dual-wield or switch to real blades when needed. He possesses quick reflexes and heightened senses.
- Enhanced Perception & Mind’s Eye: After sewing his eyes shut, he develops superior 360-degree situational awareness (Shingantsu), allowing him to sense his surroundings without sight. He can also predict opponents’ movements by reading preparatory motions (Tengantsu), further enhanced by his uniform.
- Blade Regalia series: His Three-Star Goku Uniform transforms into kendo-inspired armor that grants superhuman strength and speed.
- Early versions allow him to extend multiple shinai blades from his gauntlets and create illusory afterimages.
- Later upgrades (Mk.II, Mk.III, and final Secret Unsealed) become sleeker and more powerful, featuring energy blades, greatly enhanced physical abilities, and special techniques like rapid multi-thrust attacks and energy whirlwinds.
- He can generate powerful energy attacks from his sword in his final form.
Relationships
- Satsuki Kiryūin: Fought her as a gang leader in middle school and lost. Impressed by her strength, he joined her cause and became one of her most loyal subordinates.
- Ryūko Matoi: Initially saw her as a rival after she defeated multiple clubs under his supervision. After two losses (especially the one where she “took his eyes”), he comes to deeply respect her, calling her “the woman who took my eyes and gave me the world.”
- Shirō Iori: Asks him personally to sew his eyes shut as a favor rather than an order.
- Omiko Hakodate: Supervises her as captain of the tennis club.
- Later fights alongside the rest of the group against Ragyō and the Life Fibers.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Uzu was once the leader of a large gang of middle-school delinquents. After being defeated by Satsuki, he joined the Elite Four as its final member. He confidently challenged Ryūko but suffered humiliating defeats in both encounters. Determined to redeem himself, he sewed his eyes shut to develop new perception abilities. He receives upgraded versions of his Blade Regalia and plays an active role in the final battles, protecting students during the COVERS crisis and fighting with renewed strength.

- #9Aikurō Mikisugi
Keys: `aikurō mikisugi`, `mikisugi`, `naked shooting star`, `dtr`, `nudist beach`, `splendid naked officer`, `kill la kill aikurō`, `mikisugi aikurō`
Aikurō Mikisugi is Ryūko Matoi and Mako Mankanshoku’s homeroom teacher at Honnōji Academy. On the surface he appears to be a dull, middle-aged, and easily flustered educator, but he is actually a young, handsome undercover operative for the rebel group Nudist Beach. He works behind the scenes to support Ryūko and oppose the Life Fiber threat.
Appearance
In his teacher disguise, Aikurō has messy blue hair, a hunched posture, an unsteady gait, and wears large reflective glasses that hide his teal eyes. In his true form he sweeps his hair back, removes the glasses, and reveals himself as a strikingly handsome young man.
He wears a white long-sleeved shirt with a black tie and black jeans. In his true persona he frequently strips off his shirt dramatically to pose and show off his muscular body, complete with sparkles and a recurring gag where his nipples and crotch area glow bright pink-purple. He owns a car called the Naked Shooting Star and pilots a large mecha known as the Dōtonbori Robo (which he insists on calling “DTR”).
Personality
Aikurō is flamboyant, flirtatious, and theatrical. He is a smooth-talker who loves dramatic poses and stripping to show off his physique, much to Ryūko’s discomfort and embarrassment. Despite his playful and over-the-top behavior, he can switch to being serious and direct when the situation demands it.
He takes great pride in Nudist Beach despite its ridiculous name and becomes genuinely annoyed when people dismiss it. He genuinely cares about his students and keeps a watchful eye on Ryūko’s battles, often staying alert for any danger.
History
Aikurō previously worked as an assistant to Ryūko’s father, Isshin Matoi, one of the few people who understood the true threat of Life Fibers. After Isshin’s death, he received a letter instructing him to guide Ryūko to the living uniform Senketsu. To gather more information on Life Fibers, he infiltrated Honnōji Academy undercover as a teacher.
Powers & Abilities
As a Nudist Beach agent, Aikurō is skilled in combat and information gathering. He uses acupuncture needles as weapons and pilots the powerful Dōtonbori Robo (DTR) mecha in battle. He provides crucial support, intelligence, and direct assistance to Ryūko and her allies during major conflicts.
Relationships
- Ryūko Matoi: Acts as a secret guide and protector. He helps her uncover the truth about her father and watches over her fights, though his flirtatious behavior often makes her uncomfortable. He shows hesitation when others suggest harming her, even in dangerous situations.
- Tsumugu Kinagase: Fellow Nudist Beach operative. They share mutual trust, with Tsumugu owing Aikurō for a past favor. They work closely together against the Life Fiber threat.
- He later allies with the Elite Four, Satsuki Kiryūin, and other resistance members.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Aikurō begins as Ryūko’s seemingly ordinary (and odd) homeroom teacher. He secretly leads her to Senketsu and gradually reveals his true identity as a Nudist Beach agent. He provides critical information about Life Fibers, assists in battles using his mecha, and helps coordinate resistance efforts. Despite initial distrust from Ryūko, he proves himself a reliable ally and continues supporting her through the final conflicts against Ragyō and the Original Life Fiber.
Notable Quotes
- “Nudist Beach. We're Nudist Beach. It is the name of our organization. Nudist BEEEEAAAACH!”

Trivia
- His name combines characters meaning “love/affection,” “nine,” and “son.”
- His surname means “beautiful tree cedar.”

- A specific soundtrack track often plays during his scenes.
- #10Tsumugu Kinagase
Keys: `sewing machine gun`, `anti life fiber`, `tsumugu kinagase`, `nudist beach`, `kill la kill tsumugu`, `kinagase tsumugu`, `kinagase`
Tsumugu Kinagase is a dedicated operative and scientist for the rebel group Nudist Beach. A serious and intense man driven by personal tragedy, he fights to purge the world of Life Fibers after witnessing his sister’s death during a failed experiment. He initially clashes with Ryūko Matoi but eventually becomes an ally.
Appearance
Tsumugu is a tall, muscular man in his twenties with short black hair styled into a bright red mohawk. He has thick eyebrows, two earrings in his left ear, and often wears a bandage on his nose. His guerrilla-style outfit consists of a high-collared military vest and dark green pants loaded with belts and ammo. He shares a distinctive physical trait with Ryūko — black hair with a red streak.
Personality
Tsumugu is very serious, focused, and direct. He harbors a deep hatred for Life Fiber-based clothing, especially Kamui, which he views as parasitic entities that will eventually kill their wearers. He frequently states “There are two things you need to know” when explaining his reasoning. Despite his intense hatred, he is capable of recognizing genuine bonds and will change his stance when proven wrong. He is a heavy smoker and a highly tactical fighter.
History
Tsumugu worked alongside Isshin Matoi and his older sister Kinue on Life Fiber research. When Kinue volunteered as a test subject for a Kamui, believing people and clothing could form a true bond, the experiment failed catastrophically — she was overwhelmed and devoured by the uniform in front of Tsumugu. This tragedy ignited his burning hatred for Life Fibers and turned him into a dedicated hunter for Nudist Beach.
Powers & Abilities
Tsumugu is extremely tough and skilled in combat even without any enhancing uniform. He specializes in anti-Life Fiber weaponry and tactics:
- Sewing machine-shaped guns that fire alloy acupuncture needles designed to desynchronize Life Fibers from their wearers.
- Thread spool grenades and smoke bombs for area control and disorientation.
- Wrist-mounted firing pins and large-scale smoke deployment from his vest pockets.
- Expert trap-setting, stealth, and tactical incapacitation — he once successfully disabled Ryūko while she was synchronized with Senketsu.
Relationships
- Kinue Kinagase: His deceased older sister. Her death during a Kamui experiment is the driving force behind his hatred of Life Fibers.
- Isshin Matoi: Former colleague and mentor figure in Life Fiber research.
- Aikurō Mikisugi: Fellow Nudist Beach operative. Tsumugu owes him a significant debt and will follow most of his orders, with the notable exception of anything involving Kamui.
- Ryūko Matoi: Initially antagonistic, trying to take Senketsu from her to “protect” her. He later accepts that Ryūko and Senketsu genuinely care for each other and becomes an ally.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Tsumugu first appears attacking Ryūko, believing Senketsu will eventually kill her just as the Kamui killed his sister. After witnessing their true bond and being threatened by Senketsu himself, he chooses to help them instead. He continues working with Nudist Beach and eventually joins forces with Ryūko, Satsuki, and the others in the final battles against Ragyō and the Life Fiber threat.

- His guerrilla outfit was directly inspired by Marvel’s Agent Venom.
- Early concept designs gave him a pink mohawk instead of red.
- #11Ragyō Kiryūin
Keys: `ragyō kiryūin`, `kill la kill ragyō`, `kiryūin ragyō`, `main antagonist`, `ragyō`, `life fibers`, `revocs`, `shinra kōketsu`
Ragyō Kiryūin is the main antagonist of Kill la Kill. The CEO of Revocs Corporation, head of the Kiryūin conglomerate, and chair of Honnōji Academy, she is a Life Fiber/human hybrid obsessed with using Life Fibers to dominate humanity and the planet. She is the mother of Satsuki Kiryūin and Ryūko Matoi, and the creator of Nui Harime.
Appearance
Ragyō is a tall, strikingly attractive woman with an authoritarian presence. Her most distinctive feature is her luxurious silver hair streaked with multiple vibrant colors. She is always dressed in glamorous, high-fashion attire and is frequently surrounded by a radiant, blinding light. She has seven star-shaped scars on her back, likely resulting from her fusion with Life Fibers.
Personality
Ragyō is vain, proud, and utterly consumed by luxury and power. She is ruthless, sadistic, and treacherous, with no regard for human life — including that of her own daughters or herself. She enjoys domination and control, often expressing it through cruelty and sexual abuse toward those around her. She possesses an unbreakable will and absolute devotion to the Life Fibers, viewing humanity as inferior and disposable. Even in defeat, she remains defiant and convinced that Life Fibers will one day return.
History
Ragyō took on the duty of guarding the Primordial Life Fiber as the elder of the Kiryūin family. She married Sōichirō Kiryūin to gain access to his scientific expertise. She conducted dangerous Life Fiber fusion experiments on her daughters: first on the toddler Satsuki (which failed), then on the newborn Ryūko (believed to have failed, leading her to dispose of the child). She later created Nui Harime in an artificial Life Fiber womb as a more successful “daughter.” When Sōichirō discovered her plans and went into hiding, she ordered Nui to assassinate him. Her ultimate goal was to use Life Fibers to take over the world.
Powers & Abilities
As a Life Fiber hybrid, Ragyō possesses immense superhuman strength, speed, durability, regeneration, and flight. She can regenerate from almost any wound (except cuts made simultaneously from two different directions by Life Fiber-severing blades). She can manipulate Life Fibers to “Mind Stitch” and control others, and wields powerful needle-like Life Fiber swords that can change shape.
- Junketsu: Temporarily wore Satsuki’s Kamui and drew out its full power due to her hybrid nature.
- Shinra-Kōketsu: The ultimate Life Fiber uniform created for her. Required absorbing a second person (first Rei Hōōmaru, then Nui) as a host to activate its full power. Its primary ability, Absolute Domination, could paralyze and neutralize other Life Fiber clothing on a massive scale and trigger global activation of dormant Life Fibers.
Relationships
- Sōichirō Kiryūin: Married him for his skills. When he opposed her, she had no hesitation ordering his death.
- Satsuki Kiryūin: Experimented on her as a child and later abused her. Took pride in Satsuki’s achievements until her betrayal, at which point she became ruthless.
- Ryūko Matoi: Experimented on as a newborn. Later lured, brainwashed, and used her as a weapon.
- Nui Harime: Created her and viewed her as the successful daughter her biological children failed to become. Showed genuine care for Nui.
- Rei Hōōmaru: Fiercely loyal secretary who sacrificed herself for Ragyō.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Ragyō is the true mastermind behind the Life Fiber threat. She reveals herself after the Tri-City Raid Trip, brainwashes Ryūko using Junketsu, and engages in direct conflict with both daughters. She dons the ultimate uniform Shinra-Kōketsu and attempts to activate Life Fibers worldwide. After a prolonged battle in space, Ryūko severs the connection to Earth’s Life Fibers. Rather than accept defeat, Ragyō chooses to end her own life by crushing her heart, remaining convinced that Life Fibers will eventually return.
Notable Quotes
- “Anyone who dares oppose me—no, the Life Fibers—will suffer the same fate!”
- “Ryūko Matoi... don't you see? Your body is one with the Life Fibers, like mine. I thought you were dead, but now I know; You are my daughter!”
- “Poor Nui. The Life Fibers in your body were just too powerful. They kept you from having the chance to experience wearing a Kamui of your own. But now you can wear something better: the ultimate dress that is the Primordial Life Fiber!”
- “Dearest Nui... I will take it from here.”
Trivia
- Her name combines characters meaning “lightweight fabric/gauze” and “dawn/daybreak.”
- Her surname contains characters for “demon/ogre,” “dragon,” and “hospital/institution.”
- The seven scars on her back are a homage to Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star.
- As a Life Fiber hybrid, she can hear Senketsu’s voice like Ryūko.
- #12Nui Harime
Keys: `kill la kill nui`, `life fiber hybrid nui`, `grand couturier`, `scissor blade nui`, `nui harime`, `harime nui`
Nui Harime is the secondary antagonist of Kill la Kill. The cheerful yet deeply sadistic Grand Couturier of Revocs Corporation, she is a Life Fiber/human hybrid created by Ragyō Kiryūin. She murdered Isshin Matoi and took one half of the Scissor Blade, making her Ryūko Matoi’s primary target for revenge. Known for her bubbly personality, incredible combat ability, and twisted loyalty to Ragyō.
Appearance
Nui appears as a young teenage girl with long blonde hair styled in drill-like pigtails and sapphire blue eyes featuring highlights that resemble smiling faces. She wears a richly adorned pink lolita-style dress with prominent heart motifs, matching boots, fingerless gloves, and a large pink bow. She carries a parasol and wears a purple eyepatch over her left eye, which she lost during her battle with Isshin Matoi.
Personality
Nui maintains a childlike, jovial, and happy-go-lucky demeanor. She is excessively friendly, polite, and playfully intimate even with enemies, often smiling and acting nonchalant while committing horrific acts. She enjoys violence and teasing opponents in a sadistic, almost playful way. When injured or outmatched, her cheerful facade drops completely, revealing a frantic, aggressive, and vengeful side. She holds intense grudges and becomes especially unhinged when permanently harmed.
History
Nui was created by Ragyō in an artificial Life Fiber womb after failed experiments on her biological daughters. Raised as a loyal servant of the Life Fibers, she became the Grand Couturier of Revocs. Six months before the story begins, she was sent to assassinate Isshin Matoi and steal his work. She succeeded in killing him but lost her left eye in the process. Later, she disguises herself as Shinjirō Nagita to manipulate Ryūko, participates in major battles, completes the ultimate uniform Shinra-Kōketsu, and ultimately sacrifices herself by merging with the Original Life Fiber to empower Ragyō in the final battle.
Powers & Abilities
As a Life Fiber hybrid, Nui possesses immense superhuman strength, speed, durability, and regeneration (though she cannot regenerate limbs severed by the Scissor Blades or dual Bakuzan cuts). She can create identical but weaker clones of herself, use Mental Refitting to control others, and possesses master-level sewing skills — including the ability to remove a uniform’s Banshi with her hooked fingernails.
She wields one half of the Scissor Blade with exceptional skill (which can transform into a scythe) and uses a parasol and measuring tape as weapons. She is also highly skilled at infiltration, disguise, piloting, and combat tactics. She has a tendency toward artistic reality-warping effects for dramatic or comedic flair.
Relationships
- Ryūko Matoi: Enjoys taunting and playing with her. Develops an intense obsession and later a burning grudge after Ryūko permanently severs her arms. Briefly shares an intimate moment while Ryūko is brainwashed.
- Ragyō Kiryūin: Created by her and views her as “Mama.” Extremely loyal — even decapitates herself to merge with the Original Life Fiber for Ragyō’s sake.
- Satsuki Kiryūin: Treats her with excessive, unsettling intimacy and claims they once shared a close bond.
- Senketsu: Wary of him and impressed by his resistance to her techniques.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Nui kills Isshin Matoi and takes his Scissor Blade. She reveals herself during the Naturals Election, driving Ryūko into a berserk state. She later disguises herself to manipulate Ryūko into wearing Junketsu, works on completing Shinra-Kōketsu, and fights in the final battles. In the end, she willingly merges with the Original Life Fiber to empower Ragyō, after which her consciousness appears to be lost.

- #13Sōichirō Kiryūin
Keys: `senketsu creator`, `kill la kill father`, `kiryūin sōichirō`, `nudist beach founder`, `sōichirō kiryūin`, `isshin matoi`, `matoi isshin`
Sōichirō Kiryūin (also known by his alias Isshin Matoi) is the father of Satsuki Kiryūin and Ryūko Matoi, the husband of Ragyō Kiryūin, and a brilliant scientist who specialized in Life Fiber research. He ultimately betrayed his wife, faked his own death, created the living uniform Senketsu and the Scissor Blades, and founded the resistance group Nudist Beach. His actions and death are the central driving forces behind the entire story.
Appearance
As Sōichirō Kiryūin, he was a youthful man with medium-length hair styled in a mullet and large bangs that covered the right side of his face.
Under the alias Isshin Matoi, he disguised himself as an elderly man with a long beard, hunched posture, and an eyepatch over his right eye. He was often accompanied by a small mouse on his shoulder.
History
Sōichirō married Ragyō and worked alongside her researching Life Fibers. After Ragyō conducted dangerous experiments on their daughters — first on the young Satsuki (which failed) and then on the newborn Ryūko (believed to have died) — he secretly saved Ryūko, faked her death, and raised her in hiding under the name Isshin Matoi.
He taught his young daughter Satsuki the truth about Life Fibers and the Kiryūin family’s plans before going into hiding. While living as Isshin, he created the living Kamui Senketsu specifically for Ryūko and forged the Scissor Blades as weapons capable of cutting Life Fibers. He also founded the resistance organization Nudist Beach.
Six months before the main story, he was tracked down and murdered by Nui Harime on Ragyō’s orders. In his final moments, he gave Ryūko one half of the Scissor Blade and urged her to fight in his place.
Relationships
- Ryūko Matoi: His beloved younger daughter. Though their relationship was distant due to his intense research, he loved her enough to risk everything to protect her and prepare her to fight against the Life Fibers. His dying act was to pass on the Scissor Blade and his mission to her.
- Satsuki Kiryūin: His elder daughter. Before disappearing, he secretly taught her the truth about Life Fibers and left her with the legacy of rebellion. She later fights to avenge him and her sister.
- Ragyō Kiryūin: His wife. He initially worked with her but turned against her completely after she used their daughters as test subjects. He dedicated the rest of his life to opposing her plans.
- Senketsu: His creation. He designed the living uniform specifically for Ryūko. Senketsu carries visual similarities to him (eyepatch and mustache-like scarf) and was left as a final gift and weapon for his daughter.
Legacy / Story Role
Sōichirō’s actions form the foundation of the entire series. By creating Senketsu, forging the Scissor Blades, founding Nudist Beach, and raising Ryūko in secret while teaching Satsuki the truth, he set in motion the events that would eventually lead to Ragyō’s downfall. After Ragyō’s death, her personality shifts into rage and a desire for vengeance. Despite this, she is not entirely heartless and proves capable of accepting redemption when offered genuine understanding.
History
As a child in Africa during a civil war, Rei was saved by Ragyō, who protected her from soldiers and gave her the name “Rei Hōōmaru.” From that moment on, she served Ragyō and Revocs with absolute loyalty. During the final battle, she willingly allowed herself to be absorbed into Shinra-Kōketsu to activate its full power. After being ejected and surviving Ragyō’s defeat, she plotted revenge by creating Life Fiber clones of Satsuki and the Elite Four and turning the ruined Honnōji Academy into a massive weapon. She was ultimately defeated by Ryūko and the others. In a final confrontation with Satsuki, she attempted to strike her down but was talked down and chose redemption instead.
Powers & Abilities
Rei possesses enhanced combat abilities thanks to her Life Fiber-infused business suit. She can use her sleeves as powerful whips and shield herself with them. Most notably, she can create dark Life Fiber clones of Satsuki and the Elite Four, complete with their original Goku Uniforms and powers.

Personality
Sukuyo has a naturally motherly, friendly, and sweet demeanor. She is very accepting and sincere, openly admitting that her signature “Mystery Croquettes” contain questionable (though non-poisonous) ingredients. - #21Junketsu
Keys: `satsuki's kamui`, `life fiber override`, `kamui junketsu`, `junketsu`, `kill la kill junketsu`
Junketsu is a Kamui (living uniform) created by the Kiryūin family, originally intended for Satsuki Kiryūin. Unlike the more balanced and caring Senketsu, Junketsu is feral, bloodthirsty, and must be forcibly tamed through sheer willpower rather than mutual bonding. It plays a major role in the conflicts between Satsuki, Ryūko, and Ragyō.
Appearance
In its dormant state, Junketsu resembles a white-and-blue militaristic sailor uniform with a high collar, shoulder epaulets, and gold adornments. When active, it features large pointed shoulder pads with visible eyes, a white and blue color scheme, and a blood-drawing device on the left sleeve containing three needles. Its active appearance varies slightly depending on the wearer but maintains its regal and aggressive design.
Personality
Junketsu is far more feral and demonic than Senketsu. It has an intense, violent craving for blood and aggressively latches onto its wearer when awakened. Rather than forming a cooperative bond, it must be subdued and dominated through willpower. After being modified with the blood of both Kiryūin sisters and some of Senketsu’s fibers, it becomes significantly more tame and cooperative.
History
Junketsu was created by the Kiryūin family for Satsuki and was originally referred to as her “wedding dress,” though her father warned of its dangers. It was later sealed away by Ragyō due to its uncontrollable power. Satsuki retrieves and awakens it to fight Ryūko and Senketsu. Ragyō later steals it and uses it more effectively. It is then forcibly placed on Ryūko as part of a brainwashing attempt. After Ryūko violently tears it off, it is repaired by Shirō Iori and infused with blood from both sisters plus Senketsu’s Life Fibers. In the final battle, Satsuki willingly sacrifices it to empower Senketsu.
Powers and Abilities
Junketsu grants its wearer immense power when fed blood. When the wearer has no shame about its revealing form, it can achieve Life Fiber Override for its full strength. It is more draining than Senketsu and requires more blood to activate.
After being modified, it gains abilities similar to Senketsu:
- Junketsu Zankan — Bladed combat form with retractable claws.
- Junketsu Senpū — Flight-capable form.
- Junketsu Senpū Zankan — Hybrid form combining blades and flight.
- Junketsu Shinzui — Ultimate enhanced form.
Its shoulder pads can also function as grappling hooks or drills.
Limitations
Junketsu’s feral nature requires constant domination by the wearer’s willpower. It places greater physical strain on its user than Senketsu and demands more blood to maintain its form.
Relationships
- Satsuki Kiryūin: Its primary wearer. She tames it through force of will rather than bonding. After modification, their partnership improves significantly.
- Ragyō Kiryūin: Briefly wears it and draws out more of its power than Satsuki initially could.
- Ryūko Matoi: Forcibly worn during a brainwashing attempt. Ryūko violently rejects and destroys it before it is later repaired.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Junketsu begins as Satsuki’s weapon against Ryūko. It is stolen by Ragyō, who uses it more effectively. It is later forced onto Ryūko as part of a mind-control scheme. After being violently torn off, it is repaired and enhanced with hybrid modifications. In the final battle, Satsuki sacrifices it to help Senketsu reach his ultimate form and defeat Ragyō.
Trivia
- Its name literally means “purity.”
- It was originally sealed away because its power was considered too dangerous and uncontrollable.
- #22Kaneo Takarada
Keys: `nudist beach supporter`, `kill la kill takarada`, `takarada kaneo`, `kaneo takarada`, `osaka president`, `dōtonbori robo`
Kaneo Takarada is the arrogant, money-obsessed President of Naniwa Kinman High School’s Student Council and the heir to the Takarada conglomerate. While he initially appears as an enemy of Satsuki Kiryūin’s forces, he is secretly a strong supporter of Nudist Beach and ultimately sacrifices his entire fortune to aid in the fight against the Life Fibers.
Personality
Kaneo is arrogant, proud, shameless, and completely obsessed with money. He throws his wealth around without hesitation, using it to hire fighters, fund operations, and even destroy parts of Osaka if it serves his goals. Despite his flashy and self-serving attitude, he is surprisingly loyal and defiant. Even after being brutally beaten by Satsuki’s forces, he refuses to betray Nudist Beach or reveal its secrets. In the end, he willingly gives up his entire conglomerate’s fortune to support humanity’s battle against COVERS.
History
As the wealthy Student Council President of Naniwa Kinman High School, Kaneo uses his financial power to control and defend Osaka. He initially clashes with Satsuki Kiryūin’s invading forces. However, it is later revealed that he has been secretly supporting Nudist Beach all along. He spends the entirety of his family’s fortune constructing the S.S. Naked Sun, a powerful battleship that serves as Nudist Beach’s final line of defense. His actions prove that beneath his money-obsessed exterior lies genuine commitment to the resistance.
Powers and Abilities
Kaneo pilots the Dōtonbori Robo, a large crab-shaped mech provided by Nudist Beach. It is specially designed to combat Goku Uniforms and features a flamethrower, gourd-shaped missiles, and a special immobilizing paste. While powerful, the mech has a notably humorous weak point.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Kaneo first appears as a wealthy, over-the-top antagonist defending Osaka from Satsuki’s forces. After being defeated, his true allegiance to Nudist Beach is revealed. He later sacrifices his entire fortune to fund the construction of the S.S. Naked Sun, playing a crucial behind-the-scenes role in the final battles against Ragyō and the Life Fibers.
Trivia
- His name is a pun on money, roughly translating to “Lots-of-Treasure Money-Man.”
- His face appears on “Takarada Bucks,” the local currency he uses.
- His mech’s head resembles Kuidaore Taro, a famous mascot from Osaka’s Dōtonbori district.
- His pinstriped, tiger-themed outfit references the Hanshin Tigers baseball team, known for their rivalry with Tokyo’s Yomiuri Giants.
- #23Kamui
Keys: `life fiber clothing`, `kill la kill kamui`, `senketsu`, `junketsu`, `kamui`, `shinra kōketsu`, `god robe`
Kamui (神衣, God Robe) are sentient articles of clothing created entirely from Life Fibers. They possess a high degree of intelligence and can transform into extremely powerful armor when fed the wearer’s blood. Only a handful of true Kamui exist, with Senketsu and Junketsu being the primary examples shown, while Shinra-Kōketsu represents something far greater.
Nature and Personality
Kamui are living beings rather than simple clothing. They have their own will and can form bonds (or conflicts) with their wearers. They require blood to activate and maintain their power. A compatible wearer who fully accepts the Kamui can sustain it with minimal blood after the initial activation. An incompatible or unwilling wearer may find the Kamui refusing to work or becoming dangerously aggressive.
Unlike regular Goku Uniforms, Kamui are far more powerful but also more dangerous. In their active state, they take on skimpy, revealing forms to minimize skin contact and reduce the risk of the wearer being overwhelmed by the Life Fibers.
Abilities
When properly synchronized, a Kamui grants its wearer immense strength, speed, durability, and destructive power — far beyond what Goku Uniforms can provide. They can generate powerful shockwaves, create craters, and deliver attacks on a massive scale.
Some Kamui can further transform to adapt to different situations (such as gaining flight capabilities). They are also capable of absorbing Life Fibers from defeated opponents to grow stronger.
Known Kamui
-
Senketsu Created by Isshin Matoi specifically for his daughter Ryūko. He is unique among Kamui because he can speak (though only Ryūko can hear him), thanks to her DNA being spliced into his fibers during his creation. He is more intelligent, caring, and cooperative than other Kamui, often giving Ryūko tactical advice and emotional support.
-
Junketsu Created by the Kiryūin family for Satsuki. It is significantly more feral and bloodthirsty than Senketsu. It must be forcibly dominated through the wearer’s willpower rather than forming a natural bond. After being modified with the blood of both Kiryūin sisters and some of Senketsu’s fibers, it becomes more stable and gains new transformation abilities.
-
Shinra-Kōketsu Referred to as “the ultimate Kamui.” It is fundamentally different from the others — designed as a massive, ornate Japanese-style wedding dress that covers far more of the body. Its most powerful ability is Absolute Domination, which can neutralize and paralyze other Life Fiber-based clothing (including other Kamui). It requires a second person to be absorbed as a host to reach its full power.
Limitations
Kamui require blood to function and can be extremely draining on the wearer. If the wearer does not fully accept or synchronize with the Kamui, it may refuse to work or become dangerously aggressive. They are also more volatile and risky than standard Goku Uniforms, sometimes overwhelming or even disfiguring the wearer if not properly controlled.
Story Role
Kamui represent the pinnacle of Life Fiber technology. While Senketsu and Junketsu are used as personal weapons in the conflicts between Ryūko, Satsuki, and Ragyō, Shinra-Kōketsu serves as Ragyō’s ultimate tool in her attempt to dominate the planet through Life Fibers.
-
- #24Goku Uniform
Keys: `three star uniform`, `kill la kill uniform`, `goku uniform`, `goku seifuku`, `elite four uniform`, `one star uniform`, `two star uniform`
Goku Uniforms (極制服, Goku Seifuku) are special uniforms worn by high-ranking students at Honnōji Academy. Created by the Sewing Club under Shirō Iori, they are infused with varying percentages of Life Fibers and grant their wearers superhuman abilities. The power and rank of a uniform are indicated by the number of stars emblazoned on it.
Ranks
-
One-Star Goku Uniforms (10% Life Fibers) The most common type. They provide basic superhuman enhancements in strength, speed, and durability. They are mass-produced and given to regular high-ranking students.
-
Two-Star Goku Uniforms (20% Life Fibers) Given to club presidents. These uniforms are significantly more powerful and often have unique abilities tailored to the wearer’s role or fighting style. They feature more elaborate designs with reddish lining and manifested weaponry.
-
Three-Star Goku Uniforms (30% Life Fibers) The most powerful standard Goku Uniforms. Worn exclusively by the Elite Four and Shirō Iori. These uniforms grant overwhelming power, are immune to attacks from lower-star uniforms, and can transform into specialized battle forms similar to Kamui. Each has a unique design and set of abilities based on its wearer.
-
Five-Star Goku Uniforms (50% Life Fibers) Experimental uniforms created for testing. They provide immense power and physical enhancement but cause the wearer to lose control and go berserk.
Abilities
Goku Uniforms grant their wearers superhuman physical abilities, including enhanced strength, speed, durability, and specialized powers depending on the uniform’s design. Three-Star uniforms are especially formidable, capable of transforming and overpowering large numbers of lower-ranked students. Some can even rival weaker Kamui in combat when used by skilled fighters.
Limitations
While extremely tough, Goku Uniforms are not indestructible. They can be damaged by specialized weapons such as the Scissor Blades or Tsumugu Kinagase’s anti-Life Fiber arsenal. Removing the Banshi (the core thread holding the uniform together) instantly destroys them. They can also degrade and fall apart from excessive use or overuse of their power.
Notable Variations (Elite Four Uniforms)
Each member of the Elite Four wears a unique Three-Star Goku Uniform with multiple transformation stages:
- Blade Regalia (Uzu Sanageyama) — Kendo-themed armor focused on swordsmanship and enhanced perception.
- Shackle Regalia (Ira Gamagōri) — Defensive and punishing armor with self-damaging and molding abilities.
- Probe Regalia (Hōka Inumuta) — Analysis and stealth-focused uniform with optical camouflage.
- Symphony Regalia (Nonon Jakuzure) — Music and sound-based weaponry with multiple escalating forms.
- Tailor’s Regalia (Shirō Iori) — Unique lab-coat style uniform that grants mass-production sewing abilities.
Story Role
Goku Uniforms are central to the hierarchy and power structure of Honnōji Academy. Satsuki uses them to maintain control and strengthen her forces. They are repeatedly upgraded throughout the series as new data is gathered from battles (especially against Ryūko). In the final arcs, they play a major role in the resistance against Ragyō and the Life Fibers.
-
- #25Shinra-Kōketsu
Keys: `ragyō's final weapon`, `ultimate kamui`, `kill la kill shinra`, `absolute domination`, `kōketsu`, `shinra kōketsu`
Shinra-Kōketsu is the “ultimate Kamui,” created by Nui Harime with assistance from brainwashed members of the Sewing Club. It is fundamentally different from Senketsu and Junketsu, designed as Ragyō Kiryūin’s final weapon in her plan to dominate the world with Life Fibers.
Appearance
Unlike the sailor uniform-inspired designs of Senketsu and Junketsu, Shinra-Kōketsu is fashioned after a massive traditional Japanese wedding dress. It features large billowing sleeves, a hood, and is significantly larger than regular Kamui. When activated, it extends several floating eye-like “wings.” During battle, it can spontaneously shift into a more streamlined sleeveless gown form.
History
Shinra-Kōketsu was commissioned by Ragyō after her victory at the Great Culture and Sport Festival as the final stage of her plan. It was completed in the later episodes with help from the brainwashed Sewing Club. Ragyō dons it and absorbs Rei Hōōmaru to activate its full power. Later, Nui Harime decapitates herself and merges with the Original Life Fiber, which then fuses with Shinra-Kōketsu. It is ultimately absorbed by Senketsu during the final battle and destroyed when Ryūko reverses the global Life Fiber activation.
Powers and Abilities
Shinra-Kōketsu possesses overwhelming power far beyond that of normal Kamui. Its most dangerous ability is Absolute Domination (also called Life Fiber Domination), which can neutralize and paralyze other Life Fiber-based clothing, including Goku Uniforms and other Kamui.
It requires absorbing a second person as a host (such as Rei Hōōmaru) to reach its full potential. It is extremely durable — regular Scissor Blades have little effect on it. It can also be used to revive and empower the Original Life Fiber, and it grants Ragyō the ability to fly into space to manually trigger the global Life Fiber signal.
Story Arc Summary (High-Level)
Shinra-Kōketsu is completed late in the series as Ragyō’s ultimate weapon. She uses it to immobilize her enemies and begin the final phase of her plan to cover the Earth in Life Fibers. After intense resistance from Ryūko, Satsuki, and their allies, Senketsu manages to absorb its power. It is ultimately destroyed when Ryūko uses the satellite to reverse the Life Fiber takeover and restore humanity.
Trivia
- The naming structure (“Shinra” to “Kōketsu”) mirrors “Kamui” to “Senketsu,” implying it exists on a higher level than regular Kamui.
- “Kōketsu” refers to an ancient Japanese tie-dyeing technique from the Nara period.
- #26Life Fibers
Keys: `primordial life fiber`, `original life fiber`, `celestial cocoon seed planet`, `covers`, `life fibers`, `banshi`, `kill la kill life fibers`
Life Fibers (生命戦維, Seimei Sen'i) are sentient parasitic organisms of extraterrestrial origin. They are the source of all clothing on Earth and were responsible for accelerating the evolution of humanity. All Life Fibers originate from the Original Life Fiber (also called the Primordial Life Fiber), a massive entity that crashed on Earth tens of thousands of years ago.
Origin and Biology
Life Fibers are multi-cellular microorganisms that grow in long, durable red strands. They are vastly different from any Earth-based lifeform. As parasites, they feed on the bio-energy found in the nervous and circulatory systems of living hosts. Rather than inhabiting internal organs, they cover the host’s body and bind to the peripheral nervous system to maximize the host’s longevity.
They possess strong regenerative abilities and can rapidly evolve in response to threats. They are self-aware and capable of making decisions. While they usually cannot communicate directly with hosts, exceptions exist (such as Senketsu speaking to Ryūko due to her DNA being spliced into him during his creation).
Abilities and Nature
Life Fibers are extremely durable and can regenerate from most damage unless severed simultaneously from two different directions (such as by the Scissor Blades). They can subtly manipulate the evolution of a species, enhancing traits like brain development in humanity’s ancestors.
When concentrated in clothing or fused directly with a host, they can grant superhuman strength, speed, durability, and special abilities. However, high concentrations can overwhelm and corrupt the wearer, sometimes causing loss of control or physical mutation.
Use as Material
Life Fibers are the foundation of all advanced clothing in the series:
- Goku Uniforms: Contain 10–30% Life Fibers depending on their star rating.
- Kamui: Made entirely of Life Fibers.
- Regular clothing produced by Revocs also contains trace amounts.
They are woven into garments by the Sewing Club, with Shirō Iori overseeing most production and upgrades.
Banshi (Nexus Thread)
Every Life Fiber garment contains a core thread called the Banshi, which holds it together and embodies the will to “cover.” Severing or removing the Banshi instantly destroys the garment. Most uniforms have one Banshi, though Senketsu possesses multiple.
COVERS
COVERS are Life Fiber entities created to spread Life Fibers across the world (note that “Revocs” is an anagram of “COVERS”). They exist in several forms:
- Cloth-type COVERS: Flat, suit-like entities that remain connected to the Original Life Fiber.
- Humanoid COVERS: Can absorb humans for energy and act independently.
- Combat Enhanced COVERS: More muscular and powerful versions that specialize in fighting.
Life Fiber Hybrids and Artificial Beings
It is possible to fuse Life Fibers directly with a human to create a hybrid. Such beings possess immense strength and regeneration. Known examples include:
- Ryūko Matoi and Ragyō Kiryūin (natural hybrids through experimentation).
- Nui Harime, who was artificially created in a Life Fiber womb and may be composed almost entirely of Life Fibers.
Life Fibers can also be used for cloning, as demonstrated by Rei Hōōmaru.
Reproduction and Planetary Threat
Life Fibers reproduce by subtly guiding the evolution of a dominant species on a planet. Once the species is widespread and advanced, the Fibers take control of the population, causing them to rise into the atmosphere and form a massive planetary cocoon known as the Celestial Cocoon Seed Planet. They then consume the planet’s thermal energy to create new Life Fiber seeds before destroying the planet and scattering the seeds across the galaxy.
Story Role
Life Fibers are the central antagonistic force of the series. Ragyō seeks to use them to dominate and eventually consume the Earth. The Original Life Fiber is eventually destroyed through the combined efforts of Ryūko, Senketsu, and their allies.
- #27Scissor Blades
Keys: `rending scissors`, `fiber lost`, `decapitation mode`, `scissor blades`, `kill la kill scissor`, `red scissor blade`, `purple scissor blade`
Scissor Blades (片太刀鋏, Katatachi Basami), also known as the Rending Scissors when combined, are a pair of giant scissors created by Isshin Matoi specifically to sever Life Fibers. Made from hardened Life Fibers, they are among the few weapons capable of damaging Goku Uniforms and Kamui (with the notable exception of Shinra-Kōketsu). One half was inherited by Ryūko Matoi, while the other was taken by Nui Harime after she murdered Isshin.
The Two Halves
-
Red Scissor Blade (Ryūko’s half) Features a crescent-shaped hilt that can extend into a longer two-handed sword known as Decapitation Mode. Ryūko’s signature finishing move is Fiber Lost, a powerful long-range slash that destroys Goku Uniforms and allows her to absorb their Life Fibers. The blade can also shrink to a tiny size for easy storage and is usually carried in a metal guitar case when not in use.
-
Purple Scissor Blade (Nui’s half) Features a circular handle and a slightly different shape. It can transform into a double-bladed scythe form for greater reach and power. It was eventually recovered by Ryūko during her final confrontation with Nui. This half changes color from purple back to red once Ryūko obtains it.
Rending Scissors (Combined Form)
When both halves are used together, they become the Rending Scissors. In this state, they can sever Life Fibers and completely prevent their regeneration (as seen with Nui losing her eye and arms). The blades do not need to be physically joined to achieve this effect. In their most powerful forms, they can grow to enormous sizes and are used in dramatic finishing attacks, such as Dual Decapitation Mode or massive “Alumni Mode” strikes.
Abilities and Special Modes
- Extend into larger two-handed forms (Decapitation Mode).
- Shrink to a small, portable size.
- Deliver powerful long-range slashes capable of destroying Life Fiber garments.
- Prevent Life Fiber regeneration when both blades strike simultaneously.
- In the final battle, they grow to colossal size and are used alongside the remains of the S.S. Naked Sun to destroy the Honnōji Academy Final Defense Apparatus.
Story Role
The Scissor Blades are central to Ryūko’s quest for revenge after her father’s murder. One half drives her initial conflict with Nui, while recovering the second half marks a major turning point in her power. They are ultimately used in the climactic battles against Ragyō and the final defense of Honnōji Academy. At the end of the series, both blades sink into Tokyo Bay along with the ruined city.
Trivia
- The blades were specifically engineered by Isshin Matoi as weapons against Life Fibers.
- They are one of the few weapons capable of permanently damaging high-level Life Fiber constructs.
- Similar giant scissor weapons appear in other media, such as Mighty No. 9 and Amphibia.

- #28Bakuzan
Keys: `bakuzan kōryū`, `kill la kill bakuzan`, `bakuzan gako`, `bakuzan`, `secret sword bakuzan`, `satsuki's sword`
Bakuzan (秘剣縛斬, Hiken Bakuzan), also known as the Secret Sword Bakuzan, was Satsuki Kiryūin’s personal weapon. A black-bladed katana capable of cutting Life Fibers, it was one of the few weapons that could stand against the Scissor Blades. After being broken by Ragyō during the Great Culture and Sport Festival, it was reforged into two smaller blades that were temporarily wielded by members of the Elite Four before being returned to Satsuki. Both halves were ultimately destroyed in the final battle against Ragyō.
The Reforged Halves
-
Bakuzan Gako The shorter half, reforged into a tantō (short sword). It was first wielded by Nonon Jakuzure before she returned it to Satsuki.
-
Bakuzan Kōryū The longer half, reforged into a wakizashi. It was initially given to Ira Gamagōri, who later passed it to Uzu Sanageyama (claiming it suited him better). Sanageyama eventually returned it to Satsuki after her rescue.
Abilities
Bakuzan can sever Life Fibers and, when both halves are used together, can nullify their regeneration in a manner similar to the Scissor Blades. It was strong enough to clash evenly with the Scissor Blades in skilled hands. Satsuki also had hidden false toenails made from the same material, which she could use as concealed weapons.
Story Role
Bakuzan served as Satsuki’s primary weapon throughout much of the series. After being broken by Ragyō, its reforged halves were distributed among the Elite Four as a sign of trust and utility. They were later reclaimed by Satsuki and used in the final battles. Both blades were destroyed during the climactic fight against Ragyō and Shinra-Kōketsu.
Trivia
- Satsuki’s hidden false toenails were crafted from the same material as Bakuzan.
- Ira Gamagōri’s final Goku Uniform (Persona Unleashed) had arm plating as strong as Bakuzan.
-
- #29Dōtonbori Robo
Keys: `elite four dtr`, `dtr`, `nudist beach mech`, `gold mega crab`, `kill la kill dtr`, `dōtonbori robo`
Dōtonbori Robo (abbreviated as DTR) are battle mechs developed and used by Nudist Beach. They were first deployed during the battle for Osaka and serve as specialized anti-Goku Uniform and anti-Life Fiber combat units. Aikurō Mikisugi has a running gag of strongly disliking the full name and always insisting on calling them “DTR.”
Purpose and Design
The Dōtonbori Robo are large, heavily armed mechs designed to fight against Life Fiber-enhanced enemies. They come in multiple variants, ranging from mass-produced standard models to highly customized versions. Their weaponry typically includes missiles, flamethrowers, immobilizing paste, and close-range combat tools. Some models have notable weak points that can be exploited in battle.
Variations
-
Gold Mega Crab Kaneo Takarada’s personal customized DTR. It has a golden crab-like design armed with bottle gourd missiles, crab claws, a flamethrower, and a sticky immobilizing substance. Its weak point is humorously located at the rear.
-
Standard DTR Mass-produced models used by regular Nudist Beach soldiers for general combat support.
-
Aikurō and Tsumugu’s DTR Specialized versions used by Aikurō Mikisugi and Tsumugu Kinagase. Includes an upgraded “Ultimate Double Naked DTR” variant used in critical battles.
-
Elite Four Customized DTRs Custom-built mechs created for the Elite Four after they allied with Nudist Beach. While powerful, they proved difficult and uncomfortable to pilot manually, so Hōka Inumuta often controlled them remotely instead. They were briefly used against Rei Hōōmaru’s clones.
Story Role
The Dōtonbori Robo first appear during Satsuki’s campaign in Osaka, where Kaneo Takarada uses his Gold Mega Crab to resist the raid. They later play important roles in the final battles against Ragyō and in the defense against Rei’s forces in the OVA. They represent Nudist Beach’s technological edge in fighting Life Fiber threats.
Trivia
- Aikurō Mikisugi despises the full name “Dōtonbori Robo” and always shortens it to “DTR,” sometimes going to comedic lengths to enforce the abbreviation.
- The name “Dōtonbori” references a famous district in Osaka, known historically as a red-light and entertainment area.
- The mechs vary greatly in design, from practical military models to flashy customized versions like Kaneo’s golden crab.
-
- #30S.S. Naked Sun
Keys: `great naked dagger`, `naked sun`, `naked sol`, `kill la kill naked sun`, `nudist beach ship`, `s.s. naked sun`
S.S. Naked Sun (also known as the Naked Sol) is Nudist Beach’s final and most powerful asset — a massive carrier ship funded entirely by the Takarada Conglomerate. It serves as the organization’s last line of defense and was deployed during “Operation Rescue Satsuki” to extract Satsuki Kiryūin from Honnōji Academy.
Design and Capabilities
The S.S. Naked Sun is a long, thin-bodied ship with a wide upper deck. It is dry-docked in an underground base beneath Osaka. When launched, the city literally parts to allow the ship to rise through the water.
In its closed combat form, the ship transforms into a shape resembling a giant seam ripper (which Aikurō dramatically calls the “Great Naked Dagger”). It is powered by enormous turbine wheels that the crew must run like oversized hamster wheels. When Mako Mankanshoku powered the turbines while wearing her Two-Star Goku Uniform, the ship achieved incredible speed and force.
Story Role
The S.S. Naked Sun was first used to rescue Satsuki from Honnōji Academy. Later, in its closed “seam ripper” form, it was used as a weapon to pierce straight through the Original Life Fiber during the final battle, creating a critical opening for Ryūko and Senketsu.
After the battle, part of the ship remained embedded in Honnōji Academy’s wall. It was later seized and used as part of Rei Hōōmaru’s “Final Defense Apparatus” before being destroyed by Ryūko wielding the Rending Scissors in their most powerful form.
Trivia
- Aikurō Mikisugi strongly dislikes long names and always shortens the ship’s name dramatically.
- Its closed form is thematically designed as a giant seam ripper, fitting the series’ clothing and Life Fiber themes.
- The ship represents the full extent of Kaneo Takarada’s sacrifice, as he spent his entire conglomerate’s fortune to build it.
- #31Honnōji Academy
Keys: `honnōji academy`, `satsuki's school`, `kill la kill academy`, `honnōji`, `final defense apparatus`
Honnōji Academy is the primary setting of Kill la Kill. A high school built atop Honnō City, it appears to be an extremely strict and competitive Japanese high school on the surface, but was secretly constructed by Ragyō Kiryūin as a testing ground for Life Fiber experiments — particularly the development of Goku Uniforms.
Purpose and Dual Nature
While Ragyō intended the academy to perfect Life Fiber technology and eventually help assimilate humanity, Satsuki Kiryūin had a different goal. She used the school as a rigorous military-style boot camp to train an army capable of overthrowing her mother and stopping the Life Fiber threat. She deliberately turned the entire student body against Ryūko Matoi to identify and fix weaknesses in the Goku Uniforms.
School Structure and Hierarchy
Honnōji Academy operates on a strict, power-based hierarchy represented by stars:
- No-Star Students: The lowest rank. They wear regular uniforms and have no special privileges.
- One-Star Students: Receive basic Goku Uniforms and minor enhancements.
- Two-Star Students: Club presidents who receive more powerful and specialized Goku Uniforms.
- Three-Star Students: The Elite Four and Shirō Iori. They wield the strongest Goku Uniforms and hold significant authority.
The school is ruled with an iron fist by Satsuki and the Student Council. Disobedience or failure can result in severe punishment, and power struggles are common as higher ranks receive better living conditions and influence.
Satsuki’s True Intentions
Although Satsuki ruled through fear and strict discipline, her ultimate goal was to build a force strong enough to challenge Ragyō and Revocs. She saw Ryūko and Senketsu as useful tools to expose flaws in her army’s uniforms, even while publicly treating them as enemies. This created tension with Nudist Beach, who shared the same enemy but distrusted Satsuki’s methods until she revealed her true motives.
Major Events
Several major events took place at the academy, including:
- No-Late Day — A brutal obstacle course event.
- Honnōji Academy First Naturals Election — A tournament to determine the strongest students.
- Tri-City Schools Raid Trip — Satsuki’s campaign to conquer other schools.
- The Great Culture and Sport Festival — The event where Satsuki publicly rebelled against Ragyō.
Final Defense Apparatus
The Honnōji Academy Final Defense Apparatus is a giant war machine that the academy building can transform into. Originally intended to fight the Original Life Fiber, it was later hijacked by Rei Hōōmaru during her revenge plot. It was ultimately destroyed by Ryūko wielding the Rending Scissors in their most powerful form.
Story Role
Honnōji Academy serves as both the central battleground and a symbol of Satsuki’s iron rule. It begins as an oppressive institution but gradually reveals itself to be a training ground for rebellion. By the end of the series, both the academy and Honnō City sink into Tokyo Bay.
- #32Honnō City
Keys: `honnō city`, `honnōji city`, `honnō city slums`, `kill la kill city`, `artificial island`
Honnō City is an artificial island that serves as the main setting alongside Honnōji Academy. The academy sits at the very center of the city, which is governed by Ragyō Kiryūin with Satsuki Kiryūin acting as her proxy. Under Satsuki’s rule, the city operates as a strict, dystopian society where social status and quality of life are determined by one’s rank within the academy.
Structure and Society
Honnō City is divided into four distinct levels that separate the wealthy from the poor. A person’s standard of living is directly tied to their star ranking at Honnōji Academy:
- Higher star rankings grant access to better living conditions and areas closer to the academy.
- No-Star students are forced to live in the slums, farthest from the academy.
This system creates a rigid class hierarchy where power, privilege, and survival are earned through strength and obedience to the school’s rules. The city reflects Satsuki’s iron-fisted philosophy of weeding out the weak to build a stronger force.
Governance
The city is ruled under a totalitarian system. Satsuki maintains strict control over both the academy and the surrounding city, using fear, discipline, and the promise of advancement to keep order. While it appears to be a place of extreme oppression, Satsuki’s ultimate goal was to turn the city and school into a training ground for an army capable of fighting Ragyō and the Life Fibers.
History and Fate
Honnō City was built specifically to support the experiments and operations of Honnōji Academy. By the time Ryūko Matoi arrives, it has already become a harsh, divided society shaped by Satsuki’s rule.
At the end of the series, following the final battles against Ragyō and Rei Hōōmaru, the city sustains catastrophic damage. Its citizens evacuate, and in the end credits of Episode 24, Honnō City is shown completely submerged at the bottom of Tokyo Bay.
Known Locations
- Honnōji Academy — The central institution and heart of the city.
- Mankanshoku Back-Alley Clinic — The clinic run by Barazō Mankanshoku in the poorer districts.
- #33Kiryūin Manor
Keys: `kiryūin manor`, `kiryūin estate`, `original life fiber chamber`, `kill la kill manor`
Kiryūin Manor is the grand residence of the Kiryūin family. Located away from the main city, it serves as both their private home and a secure facility housing the Original Life Fiber in a hidden chamber deep within the estate.
Description
The manor is a large, imposing structure befitting the wealthy and powerful Kiryūin family. It contains extensive grounds and secret areas, most notably the chamber that holds the Primordial Life Fiber. The estate is heavily guarded and reflects the family’s status and influence.
History and Key Events
Ragyō Kiryūin brought Satsuki back to the manor after defeating her at the Great Culture and Sport Festival, using the time to show her daughter the Original Life Fiber and reveal more of her plans.
Later, Shirō Iori, Mitsuzō Soroi, and members of the Sewing Club attempted to infiltrate the manor in order to destroy the Original Life Fiber. The mission ended in failure, forcing them to retreat after the Life Fiber broke free from containment.
Residents and Staff
- Ragyō Kiryūin (deceased) — Former head of the household.
- Satsuki Kiryūin — Lived there during her youth and was brought back after her defeat.
- Sōichirō Kiryūin (deceased) — Former resident and husband of Ragyō.
- Mitsuzō Soroi — Long-time butler to Satsuki.
- Takiji Kuroido — Steward of the manor.
Story Role
Kiryūin Manor represents the heart of the Kiryūin family’s power and secrets. It is where Ragyō conducted some of her most important experiments and stored the Original Life Fiber. The failed infiltration attempt by the Sewing Club marked one of the first direct confrontations with the Life Fiber threat inside the estate itself.
- #34Revocs Corporation
Keys: `revocs corporation`, `kill la kill revocs`, `covers anagram`, `ragyō's company`, `revocs`
Revocs Corporation was a massive, globally dominant textile company owned by the Kiryūin conglomerate. While it presented itself as a regular high-end clothing manufacturer, its true purpose was far more sinister: to spread Life Fibers across the world through its products.
Description and True Purpose
On the surface, Revocs was an extremely successful apparel company that eventually controlled 100% of the global clothing market. In reality, every garment it produced contained trace amounts of dormant Life Fibers. These fibers were designed to eventually awaken and feed on their human wearers as part of Ragyō Kiryūin’s plan to assimilate humanity.
The company’s name, “Revocs,” is an anagram of “COVERS,” reflecting its connection to the Life Fiber entities responsible for spreading the parasites.
History
Revocs was established around the time Ragyō discovered the Original Life Fiber. Under her leadership, the company grew into a worldwide monopoly while secretly advancing the Life Fiber agenda. By the later stages of the series, nearly everyone on Earth was wearing Revocs clothing containing Life Fibers.
Following Ragyō’s defeat and the destruction of the Original Life Fiber, Revocs Corporation effectively collapsed and went out of business.
Notable Members
- Ragyō Kiryūin — CEO and mastermind behind the company’s true goals (deceased).
- Rei Hōōmaru — Ragyō’s loyal secretary (later defected and sought revenge).
- Nui Harime — Grand Couturier who designed advanced Life Fiber garments such as Shinra-Kōketsu (deceased).
- Sōichirō Kiryūin — Former scientist who worked for the company before turning against it (deceased).
Story Role
Revocs served as the public face of Ragyō’s plan to dominate the world with Life Fibers. Its clothing acted as a silent delivery system for the parasites. The company’s downfall came alongside Ragyō’s defeat, marking the end of the Life Fiber threat on Earth.
- #35Nudist Beach
Keys: `anti life fiber rebels`, `nudist beach organization`, `nudist beach`, `kill la kill nudist beach`, `aikurō's group`
Nudist Beach is a rebel organization founded by Isshin Matoi (Sōichirō Kiryūin) with the goal of stopping Ragyō Kiryūin and Revocs Corporation from using Life Fibers to dominate the world. As their name suggests, members often fight nearly or completely naked as a form of resistance against Life Fiber-based clothing.
Purpose and Ideology
Nudist Beach opposes the use of Life Fibers in any form. They believe that clothing infused with Life Fibers is inherently parasitic and dangerous. Instead of relying on enhanced uniforms, they use conventional guerrilla tactics, traps, sabotage, and specialized anti-Life Fiber technology to fight their enemies.
Organization and Methods
The group operates with a focus on stealth, preparation, and unconventional warfare. They avoid wearing Life Fiber clothing and instead use practical weapons and machines designed specifically to counter Goku Uniforms and COVERS. Their philosophy emphasizes freedom from the control of Life Fibers, even at the cost of personal comfort or conventional appearance.
Base and Technology
Their main base is located in Osaka and features a hidden, well-equipped interior despite its ragged exterior. It includes sand and water, giving it a literal “beach” aesthetic.
Key technology used by Nudist Beach includes:
- Dōtonbori Robos (DTRs) — Specialized battle mechs designed to fight Goku Uniforms.
- Emergency Rescue Suction Device — Used to extract humans from COVERS.
- S.S. Naked Sun — Their final and most powerful asset, a massive carrier ship that served as their last line of defense.
History and Key Events
Nudist Beach was founded by Isshin Matoi after he turned against his wife Ragyō. Many of their facilities were destroyed during Satsuki’s Tri-City Schools Raid Trip, but a hidden base in Osaka remained operational.
Later in the series, the organization absorbed the Student Council (including the Elite Four) into their ranks after Satsuki revealed her true intentions. They played a major role in the final battles against Ragyō and the Life Fibers.
Notable Members
- Isshin Matoi / Sōichirō Kiryūin — Founder (deceased)
- Aikurō Mikisugi — Current leader
- Tsumugu Kinagase
- Satsuki Kiryūin and the Elite Four
- Shirō Iori
