   Kafka Hibino (日ひ比び野の カフカ, Hibino Kafuka), also known as Kaiju No. 8 (怪かい獣じゅう8号ごう, Kaijū Hachi-gō), is the main protagonist of the Kaiju No. 8 manga series.

   He is a Defense Force officer and a former worker for the Professional Kaiju Cleaning Company Monster Sweeper Inc. who was turned into humanoid Identified Kaiju with shapeshifting abilities after a small kaiju entered his body. He is a member of the Third Division, which is being led by his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro.

   Kafka is a tall man with dark brown spiky hair, large eyes with small irises, thin eyebrows, and a mild goatee on his chin, he sports a rather muscular frame except for his slightly pudgy belly and he usually has a jovial expression on his face.

   Working for Monster Sweeper Inc., Kafka once regularly wore the company's uniform; it is a grey coverall with a red Monster Sweeper logo on the right side of the chest.

   Kafka's Kaiju Form is mostly covered with coal-black scales and plates, cyan energy sometimes glowing from between the cracks (most notably when he is charging a powerful attack). However, his head, spine, and clavicles appear to be made from exposed bone, resulting in these features being a contrasting white. Large plates with dorsal spines cover the back of his head and neck above the shoulders with the very top piece being white. As for his head, it has been described as a 'demonic skull-face' with two short, thick horns, a hole for a nose, and sharp, exposed teeth that extend down his neck. His eyes have black sclera with a cyan iris. Seemingly originating from them are several cracks, the left eye having several chunks of the 'mask' missing on the lower left part. Ironically, his Kaiju form resembles the armor and mask of the fallen warriors in Meireki-Era.

   When out of control, some of the Kaiju Form's features become more pronounced. Such as; his general size relative to people, elongated horns, more predominate dorsal plates, mouth extending further down his neck, and eyes turning entirely cyan (without pupils or a definable beginning or end to his sclera). The Kaiju Form's features became even more pronounced in the anime: four extensions on the back position in a cross shape, a greater height that forces a crouched posture, and the cyan energy turning red. After Kafka learned to control the berserk state for one minute, pupils will briefly appear when he speaks in that form.

   Kafka has a comically childish personality in most situations, resulting in him being an easy target for teasing by other characters despite being a determined and dedicated individual in serious situations, bringing him to try his best to do everything to succeed whether individually or for the betterment of the group. Kafka is also a genuinely caring and kind guy long before he joins the Defense Force, resulting in him going out of his way to help and care for others, regardless if they want it or not. Some examples of this behavior are when Kafka offers solutions to inconveniences, saves people from imminent danger, and sometimes scolds them for not taking better care of themselves.

   Overall Abilities: After an unknown kaiju entered his mouth, Kafka obtained the power to transform into a humanoid Daikaiju, gaining immensely powerful abilities. He eventually learned to use this power on a more advanced level, allowing him to change specific parts of his body without a full transformation; conversely, this allows him to outwardly appear completely human if he so chooses. Unfortunately, his kaiju nature remains, making it nearly impossible for Kafka to presently draw out beyond 1% of released power from the Defense Force combat suit he wears. Kafka's kaiju form has a fortitude level of 9.8, the highest fortitude level seen so far in the entire series, making him one of the most powerful kaiju to ever exist, if not the most powerful. He can overpower other kaiju rather easily, even those as powerful as a base Kaiju No. 9 who has a fortitude level of 8.5, without even tiring out. Kafka has shown so much dexterity with his new form that he could resist an onslaught from Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina and disarm him without injuring him.

   Unleashed Combat Power: Kafka is the only Defense Force troop member to ever release 0% of their combat suit's power, which later increases to 1%. Thus, only using his suit, Kafka's physical attributes are almost dampened by his inability to draw more power. However, he still manages to get strong enough to easily tear into dead kaiju bodies.

   Kaiju Transformation: After a kaiju invades his body, Kafka could transform into an incredibly powerful humanoid kaiju himself, and not only that, he was actually made with abilities that can corrode any Kaiju within its proximity due to the Mysterious Larva's nature against them.

   Immense Strength: In kaiju form, Kafka gains immense physical strength to the point where he can even annihilate a Honju. Even with only part of his body transformed, Kafka could easily lift the company's car, making Kikoru Shinomiya believe that he had his own Defense Force suit.

   Immense Durability: In his kaiju form, due to his exceptionally thick skin, Kafka is extremely resilient to the point of tanking shots. His pain resistance is so strong, that he barely felt any pain when Soshiro slashed him multiple times and came out unscathed.

   Immense Speed and Reflexes: In his kaiju form, Kafka possesses immense speed and reflexes as he can evade Soshiro's extremely fast sword attacks with relative ease. Even when not fully transformed, Kafka has shown to be able to run at tremendous speeds, impressing even Soshiro Hoshina himself.

   Unlimited Energy Source: As mentioned by Kafka, the 400-year-old ancient warriors' negative emotions turned into a "neverending stream of pitch-black fuel" that powers his Kaiju form, which was realized after he strengthened his resonance with them.

   Energy Attacks: Kafka can power up his body with electrical-like energy that flows through his body and spine. Usually, the energy is used to make some of his attacks more powerful.

   Energy Roar: By concentrating the energy in his spine and opening his mouth wide, Kafka can release a powerful energy roar that can easily neutralize attacks from individuals as powerful as Kaiju No. 9.

   Energy Boost: Working in tandem with his shapeshifting powers, Kafka's Energy Manipulation can take the form of energy flowing out of his body's pores like thrusters, enhancing the strength and speed of his attacks.

   Shapeshifting: Kafka can manipulate parts of his body, manifesting tentacles and even smaller heads and limbs on his body, and can turn his tongue into a long-range capturing weapon. He can also use this power, in conjunction with his energy and super strength, to shapeshift his elbows into thrusters, for more powerful blows or to morph his legs for better stability. Having more fine control over it, he’s able to block weapons by changing any area of his body into a jaw to grab hold of bladed attacks.

   Kaiju Sense: Kafka can sense when a kaiju will appear near him or already in the vicinity his present whereabouts. He is also able to determine what type the kaiju is if he has encountered it before.

   Regeneration: Kafka can regenerate from attacks and regrow back limbs, but doing so consumes his stamina.

   Kaiju Knowledge: Kafka's time as a member of the kaiju disposal team gives him immense knowledge of kaiju anatomy, using it to identify weaknesses and the type of kaiju he's facing. Even when working with his Defense Force suit, from which Kafka can only draw 1% of its power, he can easily pierce through a kaiju's corpse and dig into it to further study it and localize the core.

2. #2Kikoru Shinomiya

   Kikoru Shinomiya is one of the main protagonists of the Kaiju No. 8 series.

   Kikoru is a petite and fairly short young girl with long blonde hair that is tide in twintails on the sides, decorated with two black bows, big green eyes and she possesses a rather skinny yet athletic physique. On duty, Kikoru wears the usual combat suit of the Defense Force along with her usual arsenal. Her casual attire consists of a long grey dress.

   Kikoru appears as an arrogant and prideful girl who is very confident in her ability to look down on people and humiliate those she deems inferior without a second thought. Kikoru is also a very persistent and determined person, working hard to constantly improve herself and becoming stronger and more useful whenever she can. Even towards superior officers, she still manages to show her confidence, although in a much more polite and less arrogant way.

   Despite this more evident trait, Kikoru deep down cares about her comrades and does whatever in her power to avoid casualties or injuries whenever she's on the battlefield. She is also a loyal person, showing gratitude towards Kafka Hibino for saving her, and keeping his secret. Even if it's hidden by her proud and unafraid nature, she cares for her allies well-being and goes as far as needed to ensure their safety or simply to support them.

   It is revealed that Kikoru used to be very fond of her parents' work as Defense Force members, and this brought her to desire to join the Force herself. However, every since Hikari Shinomiya's death, Kikoru grew a hidden yet large sense of insecurity that brought her to push herself to get stronger and stronger, in order to keep the promise made to her mother. This, in tandem with Isao Shinomiya's overly high expectations on Kikoru, cause her to constantly feel the need to get stronger to avoid the death of anyone around her. Her relationship with her father and everything regarding her family as a whole seem to make her insecure and hesitant, easily breaking down in despair. This feelings obviously increased ever since Isao's death with her wish to get stronger growing again due to living the same trauma twice. Hidden in Kikoru's subconscious, in fact, lies her obsessive desire of being praised by her parents and grant their approval, fueling her will to become stronger in order to prove to be worthy of their praise.

   Kikoru appears to be very polite and professional when speaking to higher ups and superiors, being probably used to speaking to military officers due to her upbringing.

   Overall Abilities: Kikoru is the daughter of two famous high-ranking former Defense Force soldiers with a prodigious talent. Despite being a first-year rookie, many of her peers and superiors acknowledged her combat prowess is second to no one, allowing her to single-handedly neutralize a horde of Yoju and their Honju all by herself, and with minimal effort.[16] Her excellent skills in combat, in tandem with her remarkable Unleashed Combat Power and tactical skills, earned Kikoru the praise of many senior officers, most of them agreeing that she will become a linchpin of the Defense Force in the future. Ever since being enlisted, her abilities earned her the privilege of wielding a personal weapon in battle, which is usually only granted to higher ranking Division members.

   High Unleashed Combat Power: Despite being a rookie, Kikoru is initially able to release 46% of her combat suit's power on her first try while wearing a normal Defense Force combat suit, which Soshiro Hoshina states is platoon leader-class. She further improves her strength after marksman training, capable of releasing 55%.

   Enhanced Strength: Kikoru's strength, when wearing her Defense Force combat suit, is enough for her to effortlessly lift a car with one arm.

   Enhanced Speed: When wearing her uniform, Kikoru can run way faster than most of her peers, with them struggling to follow her pace.

   Enhanced Endurance: Kikoru's suit is resistant enough to prevent a shot from Kaiju No. 9 from killing her, although the shot can still tear the suit through.

   Axemanship Mastery: Kikoru is highly skilled at killing kaiju, so much so that she is granted her own personal weapon, a giant axe.

   After receiving a battle axe from the Defense Force, befitting her aggressive and high-handed personality, Kikoru displayed a remarkable mastery in the Squadron Style Axe Technique (斧術, Ono-jutsu). She uses this combat style for close-range battles and her proficiency gives her enough power to easily defeat durable kaiju and injure kaiju as powerful as Kaiju No. 10, although drastically consuming her stamina and energy.

   Number One: Falling Thunder (1式: 落らく雷らい, Isshiki: Rakurai): The first application of the Squadron-Style Axe Technique. By pulling the trigger on the axe she creates a shockwave that releases backward, resulting in a vicious axe chop from above.

   Number Two: Water Skimmer (2式: 水みず切きり, Nishiki: Mizukiri): The second application of the Squadron-Style Axe Technique involves sending a shockwave forward only at the moment of the impact, for a powerful and clean cut.

   Number Three: Half-Moon (3式: 半はん月げつ, Sanshiki: Hangetsu): A brutal rotating axe chop.

   Combat Suit: Kikoru wears the usual combat suit on the battlefield.

   Respirator Mask: Kikoru wears a respirator mask in combat.

   Rifle: Before being given her signature axe, Kikoru would use a rifle.

3. #3Reno Ichikawa

   Reno Ichikawa (市いち川かわ レノ, Ichikawa Reno) is the deuteragonist of the Kaiju No. 8 series.

   He briefly worked at Monster Sweeper Inc. where he met and befriended Kafka Hibino. After witnessing Kafka's transformation, Reno helped him enter the Defense Force and joined with him. He is a member of the Third Division.

   Reno is a tall, slender young man with short silver hair and big violet eyes. He usually shows a neutral unfazed look on his face, but this expression usually changes to exasperation or incredulity when around Kafka. Reno uses the usual Defense Force combat suit when on the battlefield.

   Reno is a calm and collected person. Despite initially antagonizing Kafka for giving up on his dream, he later shows a softer and more caring side towards his friend and his condition and goals. As their bond grows, Reno begins to show his protective side, not only towards Kafka but towards any of his comrades. His resolve in fighting in order to protect his peers brings him to completely ignore Iharu Furuhashi's one-sided rivalrly towards him and still put his safety first.

   In battle, Reno is a determined and straightforward person, being a natural thinker on his own. Due to his immense sense of resposibility towards his colleagues and his desire in becoming stronger, an extended usage of his Numbers Weapon can bring Reno to spiral out of control and push himself past his limits in order to be strong enough to save those around him.

   Overall Abilities: Reno is a strong troop member with great potential. He is noted by Soshiro Hoshina to have the potential to become a captain, proven when he was able to momentarily stall a kaiju as strong as Kaiju No. 9.

   High Unleashed Combat Power: When Reno first tries on his Defense Force combat suit, he is able to initially release 8% of the suit's power. After shooting training, he is able to release 18%, having drastically improved as noted by Iharu.

   Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Reno is incredibly fast, surprising Kafka with how fast he can move while carrying him. He also has incredible reflexes, able to dodge Kaiju No. 9's extremely fast attacks.

   Enhanced Endurance: Reno has incredible levels of physical endurance, able to continue fighting after Kaiju No. 9 shot him multiple times.

   Expert Marksman: Reno is a very skilled marksman.

   Respirator Mask: Reno wears a respirator mask in combat.

   Rifle: Reno uses a rifle in combat as his main weapon of choice, equipped with brust rounds and freeze rounds.

   Combat Suit: Reno wears the usual combat suit of the Defense Force.

4. #4Mina Ashiro

   Mina Ashiro (亜あ白しろ ミナ, Ashiro Mina) is the captain of the Third Division of the Defense Force and the childhood friend of Kafka Hibino.

   Mina is a beautiful young woman with waist-length black hair that is styled into a ponytail and decorated with a barrette, big dark-orange eyes with a mole under each eye and an athletic physique. Under her uniform, she has a small scar on the left side of her upper chest.

   She usually wears the Defense Force combat suit, along with a white visor that enables her to increase her vision. In battle, she usually wields firearms and her personal cannon.

   Mina is a serious and determined woman who takes her work and role in the Defense Force very seriously and she strives to uphold the promise made as a child to defeat every kaiju to the point that she dedicates all of herself to kaiju fighting. Despite her professional behavior, she has a soft spot for Kafka Hibino: although she was upset with him for not keeping his promise to stand at her side, she remembers their friendship fondly and wishes to see him succeed in the Defense Force, even after learning he was Kaiju No. 8.

   Under her tough exterior, Mina shows her authentic self as a caring person who does her best to make sure nobody gets injured in a fight and keep everyone safe. She is also prone to showing gratitude to her subordinates, praising people for their help whenever possible and being able to acknowledge someone's worth. However, these traits also contribute to a deep seated fear of failure within her.

   Overall Abilities: Mina is the Defense Force Third Division captain who is known as the strongest female captain of the Defense Force where she has neutralized hundreds of kaiju in her career. She has displayed the power to easily overpower giant-sized kaiju with a few shots.

   High Unleashed Combat Power: As a Defense Force captain, Mina is capable of using a high amount of her combat suit's power. Her maximum unleashed combat power is 96%.

   Master Marksman: Mina is a marksman of the highest caliber that she is known as "The Defense Force's Strongest Supergiant-Class Killer" because of her extraordinary marksmanship skills and mastery of her personal cannon. Her shots also possess tremendous power behind them as shown when she easily defeated a large kaiju. Mina can also have her tiger Bakko stabilize her, increasing her accuracy to precisely hit specific parts of a kaiju's body.

   Leadership Skills: As the captain of the Third Division, Mina has shown excellent leadership skills.

   Combat Suit: Mina wears a normal Defense Force combat suit on the battlefield.

   Respirator Mask: Like many other officers, Mina carries a respirator mask in battle with her.

   Rifle: When not using her cannon, Mina wields a rifle in the battlefield.

   Handgun: Mina also carries a handgun on her side.

   Visor: When using her cannon, Mina wears a visor that amplifies her vision and helps her analyze her targets from a distance.

   Cannon: Marked T-25101985 and provided by Izumo Tech, Mina's cannon in conjunction with her high force released with firearms is a powerful weapon, able to seriously damage or kill massive daikaiju-level targets with only a few rounds. Unfortunately, she can only carry a finite number of rounds on her person and can load up to 5 rounds at a time.

5. #5Soshiro Hoshina

   Soshiro Hoshina (保ほ科しな 宗そう四し郎ろう, Hoshina Sōshirō) is the vice-captain of the Third Division of the Defense Force, and a member of the Hoshina Family, a renowned clan of swordsmen from the Muromachi period.

   Soshiro is an athletic young man of average height with a small yet muscular build and dark violet short hair in a bob cut style. His red eyes (purple in the anime) are closed most of the time and he always has a jovial expression on his face, except when serious scenarios made him display an imposing expression with his eyes opened.

   When on-duty, Soshiro wears the usual Defense Force uniform. He also wears the normal combat suit used by Defense Force members when on the battlefield.

   Soshiro is rather laid-back, always having a smile on his face; it is very rare to see him downtrodden. He seems to enjoy making fun of others, especially Kafka Hibino considering him a comic relief. However, he does have some serious moments when he speaks firmly and open his eyes to emphasize the seriousness of his words. Soshiro also likes to tease captain Gen Narumi from the First Division. Despite Soshiro's relaxed and friendly appearance, he is very intelligent and intuitive. He was the only one who correctly suspected Kafka's identity as Kaiju No. 8, thus one of the main reasons he accepted him in the Third Division despite failing the exam was to keep an eye on him.

   Soshiro has a great, yet hidden, sense of loyalty towards the Defense Force and feels very thankful towards his captain Mina Ashiro for letting him into her division. His sense of loyalty to his role in the force is so strong that he deep down sees it as his only reason to live.

   Overall Abilities: Soshiro is the vice-captain of the Third Division of the Defense Force and a powerful combatant, capable of fighting on par with Kaiju No. 10.

   High Unleashed Combat Power: As a Defense Force vice-captain, Soshiro is capable of using a high amount of his combat suit's power. His maximum unleashed combat power in a normal Defense Force combat suit is 92%, but abusing the suit's power will cause him to overheat.

   Enhanced Strength: Soshiro has incredible physical strength, able to slice through Kaiju No. 8's incredibly tough skin with ease. He is also capable of slicing through Kaiju No. 10's tough skin despite being heavily damaged, something not even Kikoru Shinomiya could do with her own personal weapon.

   Immense Speed and Reflexes: Soshiro is an extremely fast combatant with extraordinary reflexes. He is shown killing a Kaiju without any noticeable movement. Kafka (in his Kaiju form) is shocked by how fast he moves and states that his speed is on a whole other level when compared to Kikoru.

   Enhanced Durability: Soshiro is an incredibly durable combatant as shown when he emerges completely unscathed after Kaiju No. 10 sends him flying through a building.

   Enhanced Endurance: Soshiro possesses tremendous levels of physical endurance. Despite being heavily injured after taking a powerful punch from Kaiju No. 10, he is able to continue fighting even after his suit overheats. After going well beyond his suit's limit, he is still able to push beyond and use 63% of his suit's power despite being heavily fatigued.

   Master Swordsman: Soshiro is an extremely skilled swordsman who hails from the Hoshina Family, a family of Kaiju slayers dating back to the Muromachi period, and is one of the Defense Force’s strongest blade specialists. When using his custom-made twin swords or his katana, Soshiro can quickly cut down his opponents with extreme speed and precision. According to his father, even at a very young age, Soshiro would’ve been considered a prodigy in the Edo period due to his extraordinary mastery in swordsmanship.

   Leadership Skills: As a vice-captain, Soshiro has shown excellent leadership skills, able to guide a whole platoon and multiple officers on the battlefield during major battles.

   Soshiro's unleashed combat power when it comes to using firearms is low, so he prefers close-ranged sword fighting. Unlike other Defense Force officers, Soshiro uses his family's unique fighting style, known as Hoshina Style (保ほ科しな流, Hoshina-ryū) His extraordinary mastery in swordsmanship allows him to brutally kill a Kaiju before Kafka's eyes without the latter noticing any movement from him.

   Soshiro's field of expertise with his style is the sword-slay technique, used with a Dual-Blade Form (二刀型, Nitō-gata). His skills and power easily allow him to fight toe-to-toe with Kaiju of Identified class, like No. 8. He also proved to use the quick-slash technique and the single-blade form with remarkable ability, despite the latter being Soichiro's specialty.

   Combat Suit: On the battlefield, Soshiro wears a normal Defense Force combat suit.

   Rifle: Despite having a low released force in shooting, Soshiro is shown wielding a rifle on the battlefield.

   Respirator Mask: Soshiro wears a respirator mask in battle.

   Twin Swords: Marked SW-2033 and provided by Izumo Tech, Soshiro's personal weapons are a pair of twin swords. The blades are sharp and durable enough to slice through incredibly tough Kaiju like Kaiju No. 8 and Kaiju No. 10.

6. #6Bakko

   Bakko (伐ばっ虎こ, Bakko) is a tiger, and is owned by Defense Force Third Division Captain Mina Ashiro. Bakko is a big adult tiger with grey-white fur, black stripes and blue eyes. Bakko seems to be rather calm and totally obedient to his owner Mina. Bakko is also very docile and doesn't mind being petted by others minus Kafka Hibino

   Alongside Mina and other Corps members, Bakko appeared to save Kafka Hibino and Leno Ichikawa from a kaiju. He was then present at Mina's apartment when a new humanoid kaiju, the future Kaiju No. 8, appeared.

   Bakko made a brief appearance during a training montage when Mina was patrolling the third division whilst observing training, Bakko then angrily roared at Kafka shocking Mina and the others due to him usually being docile, Mina quickly calmed him and he was then petted by Kikoru Akari and Hakua.

   Overall Abilities: Always present at Mina's side, even in battle, Bakko is inferred to be strong enough to take on and possibly eliminate kaiju.

   Enhanced Strength: Bakko is strong enough to balance Mina Ashiro with his own body when she uses her cannon, easily withstanding its powerful recoil.

   Enhanced Reflexes: Bakko's reflexes are fast enough to evade attacks from Kaiju No. 10.

   Regeneration: Bakko has been shown to be able to regenerate like other Kaiju, shown when he regenerated a limb that Kaiju No. 9 cut off and holes blasted through his torso.

7. #7Haruichi Izumo

   Haruichi Izumo (出いず雲も ハルイチ, Izumo Haruichi) is a wealthy young man who is the scion of Izumo Tech [4] and a prominent member of the Third Division of the Defense Force. Haruichi graduated valedictorian from Tokyo Neutralization University.

   Haruichi is a tall young man with medium-length dark sea-green hair that is tied in a half bun while leaving the rest of his hair down, big dark-blue eyes with thin eyebrows and he usually sports a relaxed expression on his face.

   On duty, he wears the usual Defense Force uniform as well as its combat suit when fighting.

   Haruichi is usually a relaxed boy with a observant and cunning personality. Due to this, Haruichi tends to be more level-headed than his peers and prefers to watch the others be rowdy from the sidelines, rather than being mixed in the chaos himself.

   Haruichi took on the second-stage exam for the Defense Force and finished second in the fitness test, but he kept his eyes on Kikoru Shinomiya, wondering how he would fare against her.

   For the aptitude test, he managed to draw 18% from the Defense Force Suit, but during the test, he was unable to keep up with Kikoru. After the end of the exam and the subsequent accident, he and the other examinees were brought to security. Days later, he was officially made a member of the Defense Force.

   Two months after, Haruichi and the others had the shooting training where he improved his power. That night, he and the other boys were in the bathroom talking about their reasons to enter the Defense Force. When he and the others heard that Kafka Hibino had a history with Captain Mina Ashiro, they talked about it so much that they overheated and fainted. That night, a kaiju appeared and their first mission started. He and Aoi Kaguragi quickly demonstrated their incredible fighting ability to their platoon leader Nakanoshima. Then, he and Aoi got ready to defeat all the Yoju after the Honju's death.

   When Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furuhashi got back from the hospital, Kafka asked Haruichi to organize a party to celebrate everyone's first mission. Haruichi's private chef Dojima prepared very expensive meat. During the party, he and the other Third Division members started discussing the mission. As they were all discussing the mission he watched as Soshiro announced Kafka's promotion to Officer of the Third Division of the Defense Force. After the party, Haruichi thanked Dojima for his service, before the chef asked the young boy about his relationship with his father. Haruichi answered that he hasn't talked to his father since a certain event, before being interrupted by Aoi.

   Days later, Haruichi and his peers had a kendo private training session, followed by Metro TV journalists. Haruichi and Reno sparred together, commending each other's kendo skills.

   During the raid, Haruichi, Aoi Kaguragi and Ryo Ikaruga fought the Wyvern-type kaiju under Kafka Hibino's instructions. As he and Aoi were about to kill a kaiju, another one attacked Haruichi before he was saved by Kikoru Shinomiya's surprise ax attack. He later witnessed as Kafka transformed into Kaiju No. 8 to save everyone from a Yoju-bomb.

   Overall Abilities: Haruichi is a promising Defense Force member who is very skilled in academics being a valedictorian graduated from Tokyo Neutralization University.

   High Unleashed Combat Power: Haruichi initially is able to release 18% of his combat suit's power. During Kaiju No. 10's raid on Tachikawa Base, his overall fighting prowess greatly improved, now able to release 36%.

   Combat Suit: Haruichi wears the regular combat suit on duty.

   Respirator Mask: Haruichi wears a respirator mask.

   Rifle: Haruichi wields a rifle on the battlefield.

8. #8Aoi Kaguragi

   Aoi Kaguragi (神かぐ楽ら木き 葵アオイ, Kaguragi Aoi) is a young member of the Third Division of the Defense Force.

   Aoi is a tall, muscular, and tan-skinned young man with spiky short mint green hair, red eyes where he has a noticeable lack of eyebrows and he usually sports a serious look on his face.

   On duty, he wears the Defense Force uniform as well as its combat suit on the battlefield.

   Aoi has a very serious demeanor, always doing his best to be on top and better than his peers and doing what he must to grow stronger and surpassing others. Despite his sometimes cold character, he hides a lot more of his emotions then he lets out. As a metter of fact, due to his proud personality, he shares a rivalry with Haruichi Izumo, another very capable trainee.

   Aoi was a rising star at Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, but turned down his future in the JGSDF to apply to the Defense Force.

   Aoi took on the second-stage exam for the Defense Force and he arrived first in the fitness test, but he kept his eyes on Kikoru Shinomiya despite that.

   For the aptitude test, he managed to draw 15% from the Defense Force Suit, but during the test, he was unable to keep up with Kikoru. After the end of the exam and the subsequent accident, he and the other examinees were brought to safety. Days later, he was officially made a member of the Defense Force.

   Two months after Aoi and the others had the shooting training, he told Haruichi Izumo that he caught up to his force after unlocking 25% of his suit power. That night he and the other boys were in the bathroom talking about their reasons to enter the Defense Force. When he and the others heard that Kafka Hibino had a history with Captain Mina Ashiro, they talked about it so much that they overheated and fainted. That night, a kaiju appeared and their first mission started where he and Haruichi quickly demonstrated their incredible ability in the field to their platoon leader Nakanoshima. Then, he and Haruichi got ready to defeat all the Yoju after the Honju's death.

   Days later, Aoi and his peers has a kendo traning session at Tachikawa Base, followed by journalists from Metro TV and Aoi decided to challenge Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina, a swords specialist. Despite being defeated, Aoi thanked Soshiro and said he'd work harder with Soshiro praising him and acknowledging his remarkable skills.

   During the raid, Aoi, Haruichi Izumo and Ryo Ikaruga fought the Wyvern-type kaiju under Kafka Hibino's instructions. As Aoi and Izumo were about to kill a kaiju, they were saved by Kikoru Shinomiya's surprise ax attack. He later witnessed as Kafka transformed into Kaiju No. 8 to save everyone from a Yoju-bomb.

   Overall Abilities: Aoi was a rising star at the JGSDF's where he is a strong promising Defense Force officer who is very strong physically and came in first in the fitness test. On the battlefield, Aoi is easily able to aid his peers through their fights against kaiju.

   Unleashed Combat Power: Aoi is able to initially release 15% of his combat suit's power. After his shooting training, he is able to release 25%.

   Combat Suit: On the battlefield Aoi wears the usual Defense Force suit.

   Respirator Mask: Aoi wears a respirator mask.

   Rifle: Aoi uses a rifle in combat.

9. #9Iharu Furuhashi

   Iharu Furuhashi (古ふる橋はし 伊イ春ハル, Furuhashi Iharu) is a young officer of the Third Division of the Defense Force.

   Iharu is a tall athletic-looking young man with messy pink hair shaved on the side, orange eyes and sharp teeth.

   In battle, Iharu wears the usual combat suit of the Defense Force, as well as the usual uniform when on duty.

   Iharu is an hot-blooded and proud individual who doesn't like to be inferior to other people or losing, and constantly tries to improve more than those he deems stronger than him. For this reason, he targeted Leno Ichikawa, bragging with him whenever he has the chance to do so Iharu is described as an headstrong character who brightens up every environment he's in.

   Iharu took on the second-stage exam for the Defense Force. He finished third in the fitness test, but kept his eyes on Kikoru Shinomiya, having the desire to crush her.

   For the aptitude test, he managed to draw 14% from the Defense Force Suit, however during the test he was unable to keep up with Kikoru. After the end of the exam and the subsequent accident, he and the other examinees were brought to security. Days later he was officially made a member of the Defense Force.

   Two months after he and the others had the shooting training Iharu was able to draw 20% of his suit. He quickly went to boast about it with Leno. That night he and the other boys were in the bathroom talking about their reasons to enter the Defense Force. When he and the others heard that Kafka Hibino had a history with Captain Mina Ashiro they talked about it so much that they overheated and fainted. That night a kaiju appeared and their first mission started. During the mission, dispatched in Ikaruga Platoon, Iharu was left speechless by Leno's incredible fighting prowess and improvement. After the Honju's death, a great number of Yoju rushed towards the Defense Force and while Iharu and Leno were facing them they encounter a strange disposal crew member. As the crew member was revealed to be the kaiju who injured Kikoru, Leno and Iharu engaged in combat with him. Upon getting injured Iharu was asked by Leno to run away and call the cavalry. As Iharu was running away the remorse of always being protected, from Mina Ashiro in his past and from Leno now, and not improving as Leno did get the best of him and, despite his injuries, came back to save Leno's life and aid him fighting the kaiju. As Leno was able to put the kaiju down the latter emerged from a barrage of corpses, ready to fight again. Iharu was then incapacitated but tried his best to prevent the kaiju from killing Leno. As he realized that he had no chance to save him, Iharu prayed for his friend's life before Kaiju No. 8 appeared and saved Leno from the Humanoid Kaiju, who got decapitated with one fist, much to Iharu's shock. He could only watch as the battle between the kaiju went on until the Defense Force arrived.

   After waking up in the hospital two weeks later he and Leno were discharged and celebrated along with the other Corps members their first mission. During the party, he discussed the mission with his peers. As they were all discussing the mission he watched as Soshiro announced Kafka's promotion to Corps member of the Third Division of the Defense Force.

   During the raid, Iharu and Leno helped the Defense Force to deal with the Wyvern-type kaiju. He later witnessed as Kafka Hibino transformed into Kaiju No. 8 to save everyone from a Yoju-bomb.

   Overall Abilities: Iharu is a strong young officer within the Defense Force, easily proving to be one of the best rookies of his year.

   High Unleashed Combat Power: Iharu was initially able to release 14% of his combat suit's power and later 20% after two months.

   Combat Suit: On the battlefield, Iharu wears a usual combat suit.

   Respirator Mask: Iharu wears a respirator mask in combat.

   Rifle: Iharu's main weapon of choice is a rifle.

10. #10Konomi Okonogi

    Konomi Okonogi (小お此この木き このみ, Okonogi Konomi) is the Operations Leader of the Third Division of the Defense Force.

    Konomi is a petite young woman with black hair styled into a ponytail and big dark eyes covered by large round glasses.

    She wears the usual Defense Force uniform, a couple of sizes larger than her.

    Konomi is a determined and professional person. She doesn't seem to approve of Soshiro's unprofessional remarks and blurts of laughter, caring deeply for him and for everyone else when they are in danger. In return, she's held in high regard by Soshiro.

    While working, Konomi displays a professional and serious behavior, quickly getting a grasp of the current situation to offer support to her comrades. She also displayed remarkable levels of intuition and analytical skills.

    During the aptitude test of the examination, she checked the vitals of the examinees as they were fighting, along with Soshiro Hoshina. Later, an unknown humanoid kaiju resurrected one of the test Kaiju and elevated its strength, injuring Kikoru in the process as she attempted to hold the line and allow the other examinees to escape with their lives. Through the sensors, Konomi determined that the revived Honju has a fortitude of 6.4 which was something that it never was from prior to being captured by the Defense Force. She was then left at the surveillance feeds by Ashiro and Hoshina, who made their way to the training grounds with armed gear.

    Soon, Konomi detected an energy surge somewhere near the 6.4 Honju; separate from thereof and evidently exceeding so. Suspecting that this is coming from a newer and even stronger organism, she reports her findings to the Third Division's Captain and Vice-Captain, who were still on their way to the battlefield. Hoshina implores her for details. However, visual confirmation was rendered impossible due to the dust cloud and debris clouding that area. Sensors, on the other hand, reveal that this new source has a fortitude of over 9.8.

    Months later she helped the Defense Force fight off a Fungal-type kaiju by informing everyone of Kafka Hibino's discovery on the Yoju's core location. Later she accompanied Vice-Captain Hoshina to ask people working at Professional Kaiju Cleaning Company Monster Sweeper Inc. about their new worker Takamichi Hotaka.

    At the beginning of the raid, Konomi intercepted the multiple kaiju who arrived on the scene and dispatched Soshiro's orders to the rest of the Defense Force. She then helped Soshiro in his fight against a new humanoid kaiju, and later assisted both him, Captain Mina Ashiro and Kikoru Shinomiya finishing off the kaiju. After the kaiju was seemingly defeated, a massive yoju-bomb fell from the sky before Okonogi could sense the presence of a kaiju whose fortitude number was 9.8. Having already seen those stats, she informed everyone that Kaiju No. 8 appeared on the scene.

    Despite not being active on the battlefield on her own, Konomi is a skilled analyst and operations leader for the Third Division. Her ability to quickly understand the situation and support the officers in battle has proven indicative for victory more than once.

    Keen Intelligence: Konomi's intuitive and analytical side make her a very valuable asset for her division.

11. #11Third Division

    The Third Division (第3部隊, Dai San-butai) is one of the Eastern Divisions in the Defense Force, located in Tachikawa Base.

    The Third Division of the Defense Force gained the fame of being an excellent squad of kaiju killers, guided by Captain Mina Ashiro, whose fame make her one of the most popular Division Captain's currently active, making her a candidate for future Defense Force Commander. The Vice-Captain himself, Soshiro Hoshina, is an extremely skilled swordsman and a powerful Defense Force member.

    The Third Division was present to eliminate a massive Kaiju who attacked Yokohama City. After defeating the kaiju, they were praised by the press and the public for their service. The day after, Captain Mina Ashiro and other troops intervened to save Monster Sweeper Inc. workers Kafka Hibino and Reno Ichikawa from a stranded Yoju. Later, Mina and the rest of her Unit were informed of the sudden appearance of a humanoid kaiju, named by the press Kaiju No. 8.

    In Tachikawa Base, headquarters of the Third Division, was later held the Aptitude Test exam. With Captain Ashiro and Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina as part of the screening exam's committee, the trainees who succeeded in joining the Third Division were Kafka Hibino, Reno Ichikawa, Kikoru Shinomiya, Haruichi Izumo, Aoi Kaguragi, Iharu Furuhashi and many others.

    The Third Division took action when, in the night, a massive fungus-type Honju appeared in Sagamihara. After dividing the various platoons in different zones and putting up a temporary base in the parking lot of a mall, Vice-Captain Soshiro conducted the operation to dispose of the multiple Yoju in the area, while Captain Ashiro appeared with her cannon to shoot the Honju and defeat him. With the help of Kafka Hibino, who found the core of the fungal-types, the Third Division proceeded to neutralize every kaiju in its path.

    During the mission, two members of the Ikaruga Platoon, Iharu Furuhashi and Leno Ichikawa, were lost and engaged in combat against the same Humanoid Kaiju who attacked the exam venue. After Kaiju No. 8's sudden arrival (and his subsequent fight against Soshiro), Iharu and Leno were taken to safety.

    One night, Tachikawa Base was attacked by a flock of Wyvern-type kaiju guided by Kaiju No. 10. While Soshiro fought against the kaiju, Ikaruga guided the newbies and his platoon against the wyverns. Eventually the senior officers came back to the base to defend it and Captain Ashiro herself (forced to leave due to Kaiju No. 8 and No. 9's cases) return to aide her comrades against the massive new humanoid. In the climax, Captain Ashiro, Vice-Captain Hoshina and Officer Shinomiya succeeded in taking down the enormous kaiju but a bomb made out of Wyvern kaiju appeared in the sky to destroy Tachikawa Base once and for all. As Captain Ashiro dispatched the members of the Third Division, Officer Hibino rushed towards the bomb before revealing his form as Kaiju No. 8. In the climax, Hibino saved everyone by punching the bomb away but was secured moments later by Mina and Soshiro.

12. #12Defense Force

    The Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force (日本防衛隊, Nihon Bōei-tai) or simply known as Defense Force, is a military organization specialized in taking down and neutralizing kaiju. It has various bases all around Japan. Ever since its creation, the Defense Force has neutralized every kaiju appeared on the scene to threaten humanity.

    To join the Defense Force candidates must pass a First-Stage Examination which consists of filling in some documents.

    The second part of the exam is a two-part system, consisting of a physical test and an aptitude test. While the first one involves regular military physical training, the aptitude test changes every year and it's the real test of one's natural ability. The test can either be Kaiju Disposal or Kaiju Neutralization.

    Candidates who passed the exam receive their results days later and take part in the Presentation of Enlistment Certificate where they are presented as official Force members and vow to give their life to the Force.

    Officers of the Defense Force are differentiated through ranks. The ranks represent the militants' status within the corps.

    The Defense Force's ranks are as follows:

    Director General (長官, Chōkan). Deputy Director (副長官, Fuku Chōkan). Chief of Staff (参謀長, Sanbō-chō). Division Captain (隊長, Taichō). Division Vice-Captain (副隊長, Fuku Taichō). Platoon Leader (小隊長, Ko Taichō). Officer (隊員, Taiin). Cadet (候補生, Kōho-sei).

    Other kinds of role include Operations Leaders (オペレーターのリーダー, Operētā no rīdā), these being skilled analysts who maneuver and command neutralization operations from afar.

    The members of the Defense Force possess a huge variety of equipment, with the most important item being the suit itself, equipped with a gas mask and a fair amount of utilities. Most of the equipment and the weapons owned by the Defense Force are made by Izumo Tech, the biggest anti-kaiju weapon manufacturer in Japan. The arsenal of most of the members consists of rifles, guns, combat knives and various kinds of bullets. Rounds are stored into a Uni-socket (ユニソケット, Yunisoketto), magazines carrying the power-bestowing organs of kaiju, known as uni-organ. This allows the bullets to recreate the kaiju's powers. Known types are:

    Explosive rounds (炸裂弾, Sakutersu-dan): Made from a Honju appeared in August 4th 1970.

    Freezing rounds (凍結弾, Tōketsu-dan): Made from a Honju appeared in February 19th 1988.

    Marked G-X4552 and provided by Izumo Tech, the combat suit used by members of the Defense Force is a bioweapon made of kaiju cells and muscle fibers. Depending on the Unleashed Combat Power (解放戦カ, Kaihō-sen Ka) of every user, it accordingly augments the wearer's physical attributes like strength, speed, precision, and reflexes. The suit itself has a jet-black color with various armored guards; green on the chest, knees and for the pockets, and silver on the shoulders, waist, wrists, boots and on the metallic spine-like armor on the back, and it also sports the Izumo Tech logo on it along with the logo of the Neutralization Bureau.

    An unleashed combat power of 40% or higher is stated to be Platoon Leader level. Abuse or extented use of the combat suit's power can cause overheat, injuring its wearer and causing physical pain to the point of making them bleed due to exhaustion.

    The Defense Force is divided in Divisions (部隊, Butai), large military groups who engage in kaiju killing missions all over their stabilized area. Each division has its own Captain and Vice-Captain, along with many platoons led by a remarkably powerful soldier.[44] Division operations are guided by the aid of Operations Leaders, who assess the situation from data and computers and announce kaijus' arrivals or deaths.

13. #13Kaiju

    Kaiju (怪かい獣じゅう, Kaijū, lit. "Strange Beast") are mysterious monsters that attack cities and people all over the world.

    Kaiju are monstrous creatures that come in different sizes and shapes. All of them have different features, some more humanoid than others. Every kaiju possess a Core (核, Kaku), which is their vital organ and weakness, inside their body, and since every kaiju comes in a different type the location of the core changes accordingly.

    All kaiju gain their powers from their Uni-organ (ユニ器官, Yuni-kikan), an organ containing their specific powers. Despite their common nature, each kaiju possesses different abilities and powers, so it's quite rare to find similar kaiju.

    Some powers most kaiju have in common are super strength, proliferation abilities, and great fortitude levels. Some of them are able to fly and the most complex are even able to practice human language and, through that, can talk.

    Every Kaiju is given a Fortitude level (フォルティチュード, Forutichūdo) which is a way for the Defense Force to measure the creature's power and its potential threat to humanity. According to the Fortitude level, Kaiju are then classified power-wise.

    Yoju (余よ獣じゅう, Yojū, lit. "Residual Beast") are smaller kaiju who accompany their Honju. There are usually numerous Yoju to assist a Honju, and some kind of Yoju can have proliferative organs as well. Yoju can appear in many ways, by traveling routes made by the Honju, latching onto the Honju, being created by the Honju, and more. Some Yoju can have a fortitude number above 6.0, thus being a Honju-level threat while still being a Yoju.

    Honju (本ホン獣じゅう, Honjū, lit. "Main Beast") are usually the biggest and most powerful kaiju, and the one who generates and guides all the other Yoju through their proliferative organs. Their fortitude level is usually above 6.0. A Honju with a fortitude level of 6.4 would require an entire Platoon of Defense Force soldiers to defeat it, and only a Captain or Vice-Captain could defeat one alone.

    Daikaiju (大だい怪かい獣じゅう, Daikaijū, lit. "Large Monster") is a special category of kaiju. It is the name given to particularly strong kaiju, whose fortitude level exceeds the number 8.0. These kinds of kaiju are part of the strongest category, with their power not necessarily being linked to their size, since Kafka, who has a fortitude level of 9.8 in his kaiju form, the highest seen thus far in the series, defeated multiple kaiju much larger than him in size. Due to their incredible power, Daikaiju can also be Honju and guide their group of Yoju (like Kaiju No. 10 with the Preondactyl Kaiju).

    Identified Kaiju (識しき別べつ怪かい獣じゅう, Shikibetsu Kaijū) are daikaiju that are extremely powerful and have a fortitude level of 9.0 or higher. Even if their fortitude level is lower than 9.0 (like Kaiju No. 9, who had a fortitude level of 8.5 before shedding its skin), if there is a need for identification than a codename will be given. While daikaiju of this caliber have always appeared in history, their identification numbers were implemented only after the fortitude observation system was established. Because neutralizing these types of kaiju takes a significantly longer time, the Neutralization Bureau gives them numbered codenames in order to identify them.

14. #14Kaiju No. 9

    Kaiju No. 9 (怪かい獣じゅう9号ごう, Kaijū Kyu-gō), currently merged with the The Daikaiju of the Meireki Era, is the main antagonist of Kaiju No. 8.

    It is a humanoid Identified Kaiju who goes around reviving the kaiju killed by the Defense Force for the sake of taking back the kaiju power stolen by humans, along with creating other Kaiju to serve as minions in an attempt to battle and destroy the Defense Force, other parts of its plans against humanity have not yet been revealed apart from this. It previously infiltrated Professional Kaiju Cleaning Company Monster Sweeper Inc.

    It appears as a tall beige humanoid kaiju with a skeletal body, spikes on its shoulder, and a head with two hammerhead shark-like protuberances. Its mouth has a set of jagged lipless block-like teeth and little round black eyes that it hides with its shapeshifting powers. Its overall shape has a long and slender silhouette with an eerie appearance. In the anime, Kaiju No. 9's body also contains faded brown coloration on its shoulders, fingers, knees and feet, and darker brown shade freckles on the chest and shoulders.

    Kaiju No. 9 seems to be a cold and calm individual, paying much attention to what happens around it. It is ruthless and driven to finish its missions no matter what, and doesn't hesitate to kill enemies who engage it, though it is also willing to spare innocent bystanders if it means to avoid drawing unwanted attention unto itself. While calculating and aloof, it can still demonstrate pure anger and annoyance whenever it is defeated or if its plans are constantly thwarted. Its weakness lies in the fact that it never seems to learn from its mistakes, having continually underestimated humanity in spite of the number of times that humans have exceeded the kaijus expectations of them.

    Immense Speed and Reflexes: Kaiju No. 9 possesses incredible speed, able to move fast enough for Leno's eyes to follow it, and can flee from dangerous scenes without being spotted. Its reflexes are incredibly fast too, allowing it to deflect bullets fired from an automatic rifle with ease.

    Immense Durability: Kaiju No. 9 is extremely durable, able to withstand a conductor round fired by Iharu without any sign of pain.

    Shapeshifting: Kaiju No. 9 can completely morph its appearance, giving it a whole different human form than its monstrous original form. It can also use its shapeshifting powers to hide and manifest its eyes and grow extra limbs at will. Its shapeshifting powers allow it to completely stretch, morph and elongate its body.

    Detachment: Its most frequent offensive attack seem to be shooting chunks of its body from its index finger, fast enough to injure the likes of Kikoru and Leno, and tear through their Defense Force suit. On the other hand, once someone can see through the timing of this attack, it becomes slightly easier to dodge it. Its accuracy is less precise in its human form. Also, these projectiles are not strong enough to significantly harm Kafka in his kaiju form.

    Metamorphosis: Kaiju No. 9 can take the appearance of beings it consumes, usually humans.

    Memory Assimilation: By consuming humans, Kaiju No. 9 can take their appearance and also their memories.

    Healing Powers: Kaiju No. 9 has healing abilities, that work both on it and other kaiju.

    Resurrection: Kaiju No. 9 has the power to resurrect dead kaiju, bringing them back to life stronger than they were before dying. Although, there's a limit to how many kaiju it can resurrect because it tires it out.

    Regeneration: Kaiju No. 9 can also heal itself from injuries to the point that it can even regrow its head after being decapitated. However, multiple blows, strong like Kafka's, can overcome its regeneration and slow it down drastically.

    Kaiju-kinesis: It has the peculiar power of moving kaiju's corpses with its mind, using them as a barrage to block attacks or stall enemies.

    Camouflage Space: It has shown the ability to create areas that cut off radio frequencies and vital signs causing people from the outside unable to enter or know their whereabouts while trapping their prey from escaping unless they choose to do so.
