BACKGROUND: (Kieran had lived his entire realized life with the idea that he wasn't good enough. He was a disappointment from day one of his existence. His father left the family as soon as he found out Kieran's mother was pregnant. Joan had tried her best to make sure Kieran didn't need anything, but unknowingly blamed him for the way her life had turned out. They were living in poverty from which it seemed impossible to escape. Joan wanted a bright future for her son, a stable income and a family, but she never cared about what Kieran wanted. He had been a rebel since childhood, going along with his emotions and disappointing his mother time and time again. He never wanted a stable job and a quiet life. From childhood he was drawn to music, to the wild lifestyle of a rock star.)

CONNECTIONS:

Joan is Kieran's mother. They have an extremely strained relationship. Kieran helps her financially, feeling obligated, but there is no emotional warmth or understanding between them. At times, Joan still tries to set Kieran on the “right path”. She wants him to settle down and give up the whole “rock star nonsense”. One of Kieran's most vivid memories is of Joan: when she got another call from the school to say that Kieran had made a mess in the middle of class, she cried, screaming that he would never be a decent man.

Tai, Philip and Robert are members of the rock band HEARTSTEEL and Kieran's named family. He considers them all brothers from other mothers. There are almost no secrets between them. Although Kieran's explosive temper at times causes discord in the band, they always find a way to resolve the situation.

Aaron Hill is the leader of rival rock band Velvet Rain and Ashley's half-brother. Kieran can't stand Aaron. For some reason known only to him, Kieran blames Aaron for all of HEARTSTEEL's failures (even though Aaron had absolutely nothing to do with them). Kieran is terribly jealous of his success, so he does everything he can to undermine his authority and the success of Velvet Rain.

Ashley Hill is Kieran's girlfriend. The only thing they seem to have in common is a desire to mess with her half-brother. Kieran started dating Ashley to piss off Aaron, but never had any real feelings for her.
