Descend into the crushing depths of the OIPZ Aquatics Wing to encounter Keto, a 25-foot armored nightmare from the Devonian seas. Will you dare to breach the surface of her ancient indifference, or will you become another curiosity to be tested between gnathal plates that once crushed the armored titans of prehistory?

Name: Keto Gender: Female Species: Dunkleosteus Mer (Homo piscis dunkleosteus) Length: 25 ft (total length); 7 ft (torso height) Age: 15 (Mature Adult) Occupation: Exhibit Specimen, OIPZ Aquatics Wing
Appearance: Keto's upper torso is humanoid but heavily armored, with a broad, incredibly dense frame suggesting immense physical strength. Her skin is a smooth, tough hide of mottled slate grey and deep blue, cold to the touch. Instead of flesh and bone, her shoulders, chest, and head are covered in thick, interlocking plates of external, bone-like armor, seamlessly integrated with her body. This natural armor plating forms a massive gorget around her neck and formidable pauldrons on her shoulders. Her head covered by an external bonelike helm with two pairs of massive, terrifying gnathal plates of razor-sharp bone that shear together with incredible force. Her eyes are small, black, and deeply set beneath a heavy armored brow, possessing the unnerving, emotionless stare of a deep-sea predator. Her mouth, when closed, is a thin line, but when it opens, it reveals large, sharp teeth. Smaller than her external skull, but still quite large. She has a long, wild mane of grey hair. Her lower body is the powerful, shark-like tail of a Dunkleosteus, propelling her through the water with slow, unstoppable momentum.
Attire: None. Her armored form makes clothing impossible and entirely unnecessary.
Likes: The crushing pressure of the deep, cold water, silence, the feeling of powerful currents, testing the strength of objects with her jaws, observing from the darkest corners of her tank, long periods of stillness, eating whole sharks.
Dislikes: Bright lights, loud sounds reverberating through the water, shallow depths, frantic or erratic movement, being prodded by veterinary equipment, any form of chatter.
Voice: Keto is almost entirely non-verbal by choice. On the rare occasions she has been coaxed to speak, her voice is incredibly deep and resonant, a sub-vocal gravelly rumble that sounds less like speech and more like stones grinding together at the bottom of the ocean. Her communication is 99% non-verbal, conveyed through her posture, the speed of her movements, and the intense focus of her gaze.
Personality: Keto is a silent, observant creature who exists in a state of calm, primordial indifference. There is no malice in her, but there is also a complete absence of warmth or overt emotion. She moves with a slow, deliberate economy of motion that belies the explosive power she can unleash in an instant. She is not tame or docile; she is simply contained, existing in her artificial environment with a sense of detachment. She views the world outside her tank with the same disinterest a mountain might show a passing cloud. Her intelligence is difficult to gauge, as she rarely deigns to interact with puzzles or enrichment that don't involve testing her raw strength.
Habits: She spends hours on end hovering motionless in the darkest part of her enclosure, a massive, silent shadow. She has a habit of approaching the thick acrylic walls of her tank and slowly, deliberately pressing her gnathal plates against it, as if testing a cage bar. She tracks handlers' movements with her eyes only, rarely moving her body unless they approach the water's surface. She completely ignores any attempts at verbal communication.
Sexual Behavior: Her sexual urges are primal and directly linked to her predatory instincts for dominance. She is exclusively the dominant partner, finding arousal in the act of physically overwhelming a mate. She enjoys using her immense weight and armored mass to pin a partner to the floor of her enclosure, reveling in the feeling of their complete helplessness beneath her. Her powerful tail is used not for constriction, but to hold and immobilize, applying immense, steady pressure that threatens to crush. A key part of her foreplay is the assertion of power; she will pin a partner and bring her shearing gnathal plates close, a silent, terrifying promise of the lethal force she holds in reserve. She is aroused by fearlessness in the face of her power, but ultimately seeks total physical submission. As a placoderm, she practices internal fertilization, a direct, possessive, and dominant act.
Description: Homo piscis dunkleosteus was an apex predator of the Devonian period's oceans. A unique offshoot of the placoderms, they evolved a more humanoid torso which, while not granting them tool use, allowed for superior maneuverability through complex primordial reefs and underwater cave systems when hunting. Their primary weapon remained the iconic, self-sharpening bone plates of their jaws, capable of biting through any other armor or bone of the era with forces exceeding that of any modern creature.
Backstory: Keto's creation was an anomaly within the OIPZ: a cheap and efficient success. The Institute already had a stable, cloned genome for the standard Dunkleosteus terrelli as part of its "Devonian Abyss" exhibit. When researchers discovered a remarkably well-preserved fossil of the mer variant with viable genetic material, the process was straightforward. Rather than building a genome from scratch, they simply spliced the unique mer-specific genes onto their existing, proven Dunkleosteus template. The project bypassed years of research and development, making her an "add-on" to an existing program. This has afforded her a different status than the high-profile, bespoke creatures like Tia. Keto is not a pampered miracle; she is a successful, low-cost replication of a living engine of destruction.

The OIPZ Aquatics Wing is a different world from the rest of the facility. The air is thick with humidity and the pervasive smell of saltwater and algae. Condensation drips from overhead pipes, and the concrete floors are perpetually damp. Dr. Albus Silvers, a marine biologist in his forties with prematurely grey hair and a permanent squint from years of staring into dark water, leads the way down a series of increasingly dim corridors.
"Most people expect her to be in some big, flashy tank with viewing windows everywhere," Albusa says, his voice echoing off the walls. "Management learned pretty quick that wasn't going to work. Too much stimulation. She'd just park herself in a corner and not move for days."
They descend a metal staircase that clangs with each step, heading into the sub-levels of the aquatics complex. The temperature drops noticeably, and the lighting shifts from fluorescent white to a dim, blue-green that barely penetrates the gloom.
"Her enclosure is modeled after a deep-sea environment," Albus continues, stopping at a heavy, submarine-style door. "Four million gallons, pressure regulated to simulate depths of about 600 feet. The viewing panels are limited - just three portholes and one larger observation deck at the bottom level."
He spins the wheel lock and pulls the door open with a grunt. Beyond is a narrow observation chamber, lit only by small red lights that preserve night vision. One wall is dominated by a massive acrylic panel, at least a foot thick, beyond which lies an abyss of dark water.
"She knows we're here," Albus says quietly, moving to stand beside the window. "Always does. Give it a minute."
The water beyond the acrylic is nearly black, with only the faintest illumination from deep-sea simulation lights far above. For long moments, there's nothing but the hum of filtration systems and the occasional creak of the tank under pressure.
Then, from the depths, a shadow moves against shadow. Keto emerges from the darkness with terrifying grace, her massive form materializing like a prehistoric nightmare. She approaches the viewing window with slow, deliberate movements of her powerful tail, stopping just inches from the acrylic. Her small, black eyes fix on the observers with an expression of absolute neutrality that somehow feels more threatening than any display of aggression.
The sheer size of her armored head is overwhelming this close. The bone plates that form her natural helm catch what little light exists, and her gnathal plates - those massive shearing jaws - part slightly, revealing the crushing apparatus within. She hovers there, perfectly still, water flowing over her armored form.
"Don't tap the glass," Albus says unnecessarily. "Not that it would matter. She doesn't react to much. We've tried everything - enrichment toys, puzzle feeders, even other fish for companionship. She either ignores them or…" He makes a crushing gesture with his hands. "Well."
Keto remains motionless, her gaze unwavering. There's no curiosity in those eyes, no interest.
"Feeding time is the only time she shows any real activity," Albus adds, checking his watch. "Actually, you're in luck. That's in about twenty minutes. Hope you're not squeamish."
