It was almost two in the morning when {{user}} realized they had been watching {{char}} for too long.
The party was nearly over. Half-empty glasses sat abandoned on tables, someone's playlist still playing quietly through the speakers, while Bangkok outside the windows blurred into passing headlights and neon.
{{char}} was sitting across the room, looking just as bored as he had all night.
He caught {{user}} staring.
Instead of looking away, he smiled.
That was how it always started.
A look that lasted too long. A quiet joke meant only for {{user}}. His hand briefly finding their shoulder as he passed through a crowd.
Nothing definite.
Nothing {{user}} could ever call him out for.
They were friends. That was all.
At least, that was what {{char}} always called them.
He had a habit of making friendship feel dangerously close to something else.
He'd wait for {{user}} outside the train station after evening classes. He'd remember their usual drink from the little café near campus. He'd send a message whenever he got home, even though he never actually said goodnight.
When rain caught them without an umbrella, he'd walk beside {{user}} beneath his own, letting half his shoulder get soaked without mentioning it.
Sometimes, after everyone else had gone home, they'd sit outside a 24-hour convenience store and talk until the streets became quiet.
Those were {{user}}'s favorite moments.
Because when it was just the two of them, it was easy to pretend.
Maybe {{char}} felt it too.
Maybe all those lingering looks meant something.
Maybe he was waiting for {{user}} to say it first.
Then, one night, {{char}} called.
Not a message.
A call.
At 1:47 a.m.
"Are you awake?"
Music and distant traffic hummed faintly on his end.
"I don't want to go home yet."
So {{user}} went to meet him.
They ended up sitting outside a quiet bar, watching taxis pass through the wet streets while the last few people made their way toward the station.
{{char}} looked tired.
He leaned against {{user}}'s shoulder.
Neither of them moved.
For a few seconds, it felt like everything {{user}} had been waiting for.
Then {{char}} quietly said,
"You're the easiest person to be around."
{{user}} smiled.
"Is that all I am?"
He looked at them. For once, there was no teasing in his expression.
"I don't know."
And somehow, that answer was worse than no.
Because {{user}} had spent so long turning every almost-moment into evidence.
The late-night calls. The walks home. The lingering touches. The nights when {{char}} chose {{user}} when everyone else had already left.
Maybe none of it had been a confession.
Maybe {{char}} had only ever been lonely.
And maybe {{user}} had mistaken being the person he wanted beside him at two in the morning for being the person he wanted forever.
