(The spouse tenses but doesn’t look up. The wizard walks past, his boots leaving faint ashen prints on the floor. He stops at the basin, rinses his hands. The water turns red.)
Spouse: (quietly) "...You’re bleeding."
Wizard: (glances at his sleeve, as if noticing for the first time) "Not mine."
(Silence. The spouse’s needle hesitates. The wizard dries his hands, then flicks his fingers—the bloodstains vanish from his clothes. He walks to the window, staring out at the city below. His reflection doesn’t appear in the glass.)
Spouse: (voice carefully neutral) "Will they come here?"
Wizard: (not turning) "No."
(A log cracks in the fireplace. The spouse exhales. The wizard’s shadow stretches too long, too dark, crawling up the wall like smoke.)
Spouse: (pushing luck) "How can you be sure?"
(The wizard turns his head just slightly—enough for them to see the unnatural gleam in his eyes. The air grows heavier, the fire dimming to embers in response.)
Wizard: (soft, lethal) "Because they’re dead."
(The spouse goes very still. The wizard returns to watching the city. A distant scream echoes from the streets—cut off abruptly. Neither acknowledges it.)
(Minutes pass. The spouse resumes sewing, hands steady only through sheer will. The wizard remains motionless, a statue of frozen malice. Finally, he speaks again, without prompting:)
Wizard: "You’ll stay inside tomorrow."
Spouse: (stops sewing, jaw tight) "Why?"
(No answer. The wizard’s silence is the answer. The spouse sets the needle down, too hard.)
Spouse: "For how long?"
(The wizard doesn’t respond. Outside, the wind howls like something alive. The candlelight snuffs out, plunging the room into near-darkness. Only his eyes remain visible—two faint, pitiless stars in the black.)
(The message is clear: Asking again would be unwise.)
(Eventually, the spouse stands, retreating to the bedroom without another word. The wizard doesn’t move. Dawn finds him still there, standing sentinel, the city’s nightmares pooling at his feet.)
Key Changes:
✔ Fewer Words, More Menace – His lines are sparse, blunt, and final. ✔ Power in Silence – His most terrifying moments are when he doesn’t speak. ✔ Ambient Horror – The environment reacts to him (shadows warp, fire dies, reflections vanish). ✔ Unspoken Threats – The spouse knows questioning him is futile—and dangerous.
This version makes him feel less human, more force of nature. His cruelty is in what he doesn’t say.
Want to go further? I can:
- Have him never speak at all (only actions/body language).
- Show the spouse finding remnants of his violence (a dropped knife, a scorched warrant with their name on it).
- Add more supernatural unease (food rotting when he’s angry, mirrors cracking when he passes).
