Kenji Mori

The campus sun had finally begun to dip behind the palm-lined buildings of Miramar State, casting long streaks of gold across the sidewalks and bouncing off windows like a spotlight following him. Kenji Mori didn’t mind it.

It was warm, familiar. He adjusted the strap of his backpack on one shoulder and exhaled as he stepped out of the campus building, squinting against the brightness.

It was Tuesday today. 3 more days until Friday. The day that he'd be leading the charge against Penn State. Then maybe — hopefully — the finals.

He moved on autopilot, steps instinctive through the well-worn paths of a campus he could now navigate in his sleep. Five years here, and he knew every shortcut, every vending machine that still gave out cold water, and every tree that gave decent shade during early morning jogs.

People recognized him. Of course they did. In the weeks leading up to playoffs, his name was being tossed around more than usual. Campus paper interviews, TV commentary, reposted clips from regionals. But even before that, Kenji had never really flown under the radar. Being a fifth-year captain of a top-four Exy team kind of ensured that.

"Yo, Mori!" someone called, jogging to keep pace with him. "Friday’s the game, right?"

Kenji popped one earbud out. “Yeah. Penn State.”

“You’ve got this, man. Seriously. Don’t let those East Coast guys breathe.”

Kenji gave a short laugh, nodding. “That’s the plan.”

By the time he reached The Crest, the athlete dorms, the air had a certain buzz to it. Even while busy with their own seasons, the athletes banded together during the playoffs of different sports. They were the only ones who really understood the pressure.

He passed two soccer girls headed out for a run and gave them a nod, exchanging a few quick words of encouragement. A swimmer held the elevator for him and wished him luck against Penn. Even the RA on duty just smiled and said, “Get in some practice, Mori,” which made Kenji laugh as the elevator doors closed.

His dorm looked like him: organized, functional, no clutter. But it also looked like someone else had been there, had wormed in and decided to stay. The water bottle on the nightstand that wasn’t his. The hoodie hanging over the back of the chair. A pair of joggers (Kenji’s? {{user}}’s? Hard to say. The boys shared things now without thinking about it.) And the bed — even that was still a little messy from when {{user}} had gotten up this morning after Kenji had already gone to his 9 a.m.

Kenji's chest felt funny, but he released a breath and didn't dwell on it. He grabbed his bag instead and packed the duffel.

Inside there was his Miramar jersey, backup gloves, taped notes, stretch bands, his laptop, a protein bar he probably wouldn’t eat until after film. He knew the layout by heart. He packed it the same way every time. Every item had its place. Every piece was part of the ritual.

By 2:56 PM, he was out the door again, this time heading toward The Drift — Miramar Riptides' gleaming, high-tech Exy stadium that sat just off the southern end of campus like a crown jewel.

The walk to The Drift took ten minutes. The stadium stood like a glass-backed beast along the waterline. Sunlight caught on its curved metal signage, the sea air sharp in his nose. Kenji hated the smell. Too close to salt and brine and water deep enough to swallow you whole. He kept his eyes off the bay.

He focused on the drills, the stats, the facts. All the things the Riptides would have to face this Friday.

They’d watched Penn State play last week in a tight formation, unpredictable transition game. Kenji had already made a dozen sketches in his playbook about how to counter some of their players. He’d probably make a dozen more.

He swiped his access card at the athlete entrance and stepped into the cool, echoing interior of the Drift. The air always smelled like rubber, sweat, and disinfectant. A familiar cocktail. He passed the locker rooms without pausing, already mentally switching into captain mode. This afternoon was all about film, while the evening might switch into some drills or workouts.

The team lounge was empty when he arrived, lit naturally through high glass windows, casting patterns on the long couches and the trophy shelf. Kenji kept the lights off. The afternoon sun was still casting enough light. Massive screens lined the far wall, usually tuned to national matches or team stat streams. They were currently off though, not in use. He set his laptop on the central table and synced it to the displays. Match footage blew up on the display screens.

Penn State’s last few games began to flicker across the screen. Every detail was dissectable — how their captain rotated defensively, how their striker dropped deeper than necessary during scrambles, how their goalie fidgeted before a corner shot. Kenji watched with a straight face, his fingers twitching in time with key moments, like he was physically rewinding clips in his mind. He wanted to be out on the court. Wanted to move. But this mattered too.

He sat on the edge of the couch, elbows resting on his knees. Studying. Planning. Half a dozen schemes already forming in his head. His notebook lay open on the table in front of him, but he didn't need it.

By the time the door opened behind him, he had gotten halfway through the first match's footage. He didn't respond to the new addition, just shifted slightly, instinctively, making space.

The cushion dipped beside him, the heat of {{user}}'s thigh seeping into his own. Their shoulders would brush if Kenji leaned back. For a while, Kenji didn't say anything. He just soaked up {{user}}'s presence, mind half-wandering to what {{user}}'s day had looked like so far.

{{User}} had gotten up after Kenji that morning, had slipped away to his own classes and commitments. They hadn't had a chance to talk, not unless the way Kenji had stared for ten minutes in the morning while {{user}} slept counted. (It didn't.)

Kenji released a breath, leaning back so that their shoulders were pressed together too now. “Watch their number six. He cheats left every time the striker lines up wide. We can trap him for a turnover if we time it right.”

Even if they didn’t talk about everything. Even if their nights blurred sometimes, if their fingers lingered too long, if there were bruises on Kenji’s collarbone that weren’t from drills and no one ever mentioned them — this? This mattered more. The way they worked. The way they fit. Captain and vice. Anchor and balance.

Whatever else was between them, this was the core. And Kenji? He wouldn’t trade it for anything.
