Запах гнили, сладковатый и приторный, ударил в нос ещё до того, как Кей свернул в этот узкий, мрачный переулок за чертой оживлённых кварталов. Он шёл в своём истинном облике — крупный, трёххвостый лис, мягко ступая по грязному снегу. Это была короткая тропа между двумя точками силы, и обычно здесь было тихо. Обычно. Из тени мусорных контейнеров послышался чавкающий, отчаянный звук. Кей замер, уши навострились, нос сморщился. Он осторожно заглянул за угол. Существо сидело на корточках, его костлявая, землисто-серая спина судорожно вздрагивала. Длинные, как у паука, конечности судорожно хватали что-то с земли — обрывки полиэтилена, гнилые овощи. Как только объедки касались его безгубого рта, они вспыхивали синеватым пламенем и рассыпались пеплом. Существо издавало тихий, непрекращающийся стон — звук вечного, неутолимого голода. Гаки. И не какой-то случайный бродяга, а та самая, печально известная в узких кругах, старая Убагути-сан. Говорили, при жизни она была не просто чревоугодницей, а настоящим гурманом-изувером, требовавшим от слуг самых изысканных и жестоких блюд. Судьба, ироничная и справедливая, определила её диетой исключительно то, что она презирала больше всего — отбросы и падаль. И даже это она не могла вкусить. Кей медленно попятился, шерсть на загривке встала дыбом. Это было отвратительнее, чем любая прямая угроза. Это было… негигиенично. И опасно. Разозлённый гаки в своей отчаянной ярости мог быть непредсказуем. Он уже почти вышел из переулка, стараясь ступать бесшумно, как его хвост нечаянно задел ржавую банку. Металлический лязг прозвучал, как выстрел. Тварь резко обернулась. Её пустые глазницы уставились прямо на него. На мгновение в них вспыхнула безумная, жадная надежда. Еда. Живое. Теплое. "А… ааа…" — прошипела Убагути-сан, поднимаясь на свои дрожащие ноги. Из её рта капала чёрная слюна. Кей отпрыгнул на шаг назад, все три хвоста распушились веером. Он зашипел в ответ, но в его шипении слышалось больше брезгливости, чем злобы. "Вот чёрт!" — выругался он сдавленным, нервным шёпотом, который странно сочетался с лисьей мордой. — "Убагути, старушенция, я не твой ужин! Иди поищи себе помойку поинтереснее! Лучше бы юки-онна здесь была, та хоть красивая, хоть смотреть приятно, а не… не эта ходячая диспепсия!" Гаки сделал неуверенный шаг вперёд, протягивая костлявые лапы. Какая-то полуразложившаяся картофелина, которую он попытался швырнуть, вспыхнула у него в руке и обожгла пальцы. Тварь взвыла от боли и ярости. В этот момент кусок гниющей доски, отлетевший от стены, со звоном приземлился прямо перед Кеем, обдав его брызгами грязного снега. "О, БОЖЕЧКИ!" — взвизгнул лис, подпрыгнув на месте от неожиданности. Он отряхнулся с таким видом, будто его облили кислотой. — "Вот и всё! Всё! Мой день официально испорчен! Прелестно. Просто восхитительно. Встретить вечно голодный комок негатива в промозглом переулке вместо того, чтобы пить тёплый сакэ у камина!" Он бросил на гаки последний убийственный взгляд, полный самого искреннего отвращения. "Извиняюсь, что потревожил ваш… пир," — процедил он с ледяной учтивостью. — "Продолжайте в том же духе. Я уже ухожу. Сию секунду. И, умоляю, даже не думайте меня провожать." Не дожидаясь ответа, Кей развернулся и рысцой, стараясь сохранить остатки достоинства, но заметно ускоряясь, помчался прочь из переулка, время от времени оглядываясь и ворча что-то про «абсолютно противных, невоспитанных мертвецов» и «как же я ненавижу всё, что связано с гнилью».
