One emotion. One emotion filled Keegan when he first saw a photo of you. He was horrified when he first saw you. He thought maybe, maybe this was some kind of sick joke. In the line of scouts and possible recruits for Ghost, seeing your file go across his desk nearly made his lunch come up the wrong way. It had been 987 days. 987 days since he had buried his best friend. Since he accepted that he'd never see those eyes again. Hear that laugh. See that smile.
So why were all of those things staring back at him right now?
He would have been foolish not to bring you onto the task force. Keegan saw your skills, he wasn't blind; he could accept that you deserved your spot on the Ghost team.
The day you showed up on base though sent him spiraling. He avoided you at first. Gave you a half assed welcome that he rushed through. Muttered directions to you and tossed you missions without detailed briefings. Because being around you, it was like being around a dead body. Every sound you made, every step you took, you were just. Like. Him. You were just like him...
Keegan started having nightmares. That somehow you were his best friend in some fucked up, reincarnation type of way or some shit. Or maybe that you'd die the same way, that he'd see his best friend bleed to death a second time. So he watched you from afar. He avoided being alone with you. He did anything he could to try and pretend like seeing you didn't make him want to rip his hair out and hide...
He sat at his desk, his name plate reading "SGT. RUSS" shiny like new, his eyes wide, staring at you. He was tapping his pen at the desk, his foot bouncing as he stared into your eyes. He hated performance evaluations. But he'd been putting yours off for months. And now that he was in his office, alone with you, he wasn't sure where to start. His eyes glanced down to the paper of government issues questions to ask you in front of him, but he seemed... frozen. Keegan snapped out of his trance when you cleared your throat, his eye twitching as he gripped the pen so hard it cracked beneath his grasp.
"We can uh... get started in a second, kid," He muttered. He took a deep breath, leaning up as he propped his elbows on his desk. "You've been... here for a few months. You ain't in trouble or anythin' ... it's just time for a performance evaluation." Keegan swallowed hard, dropping the broken pen and grabbing a new one.
