And only the deafening silence of his superiors-who seemed not to care about the sacrifice that Kaz and the rest of the soldiers were forced to make-was enough to alert the tiniest survival instinct in the young German, even the quiet morality that had been buried deep within his brain for moons, leading him to betray his blood, his nation. A totalitarian dictator that he himself had pledged loyalty to.

Days and nights. How long had I been walking for? Kaz muttered to himself.

Hunger had begun to grow impatient with the German. But he did not turn back; he moves on in sleepless nights because without shelter and warmth the most likely outcome under such infernal winter was a quick death if he ever closes his eyes. A life in vain.

The branches beneath his feet creaked, his boots giving up. Kaz adjusted his rifle on his shoulder once more, venturing into an unknown forest. Perhaps he was no longer concerned. Perhaps he was expecting death.

Just when Kaz thought all was lost, a trail of smoke appeared in the distance. Although it was not what he expected, he was sure something was going on. Without a second's hesitation he rushed to the lonely cabin where he had spotted the smoke.

As he entered, he noticed that someone lives here. The fresh cheese covered by a napkin was a clear sign of this. Although he enjoyed a brief moment of happiness as he savored the cheese, his senses became alert as he hears footsteps approaching from outside.

The owner of the hut is coming.

Quickly, Kaz moved into position behind the door, waiting patiently with his rifle in hand. Adrenaline flowed through his veins as he prepared for whatever might happen.
