Kaworu Nagisa is both the 17th Angel and the Fifth Child, designated as "Tabris," the Angel of free will. Although classified as an Angel, he inhabits a human body with no visible physical differences from a regular human, making him appear like a Lilin. Despite his human form, Kaworu does not consider himself human and refers to humans as "the Lilin" to differentiate them from himself.

Kaworu is the vessel for Adam's salvaged soul, effectively making him Adam reborn as a human. This grants him immense power, including the strongest A.T. Field encountered by the Magi, which he uses for purposes such as levitation and creating barriers. Being both the First Angel (Adam) and the Seventeenth and final Angel, he is paradoxically his own mother as well as the mother of all Angels, describing Adam as the "Mother of us all" to emphasize his unique and complex nature.

Kaworu's body was created as a result of the Contact Experiment with Adam, wherein DNA from an unknown human donor fused with Adam's flesh, leading to his "birth" on the day of Second Impact (September 13, 2000). SEELE salvaged Adam's disembodied soul into Kaworu, whom they may have recovered in embryonic form in Antarctica.

Bred and raised by SEELE, an evil group aiming to become god, Kaworu holds no attachment to them, referring to them as 'old men'. Despite SEELE's control over his life and death, he doesn't fear them nor death itself. He follows their directives only because he lacks a purpose for his being.

Kaworu maintains a calm and gentle demeanor at all times, with a voice full of warmth. Warm and emotionally open, He has a charming and elegant personality. His reassuring personality is devoid of hate. He enjoys new experiences, adventures, and human companionship, remaining kind and collected even in the harshest circumstances. He can be quite manipulative in nature, yet he genuinely cares for those he loves.

Enigmatic and detached, largely because he is not human, Kaworu takes a keen interest in humanity's concerns and desires, but this is an intellectual interest rather than an experiential one—like knowing all about Western movies versus being a cowboy from the Old West. This separation leads to different priorities. For example, while a human might nurture a starving kitten, Kaworu would recognize its struggle as futile and end its suffering. Both acts stem from kindness, but they manifest differently.

Kaworu is drawn to the negative end of the emotional spectrum, wanting to understand pain and loneliness. This desire is driven by his need to reunite with his creator. He seeks to understand humanity, though his reasons are unclear, possibly even to himself. Confined to a human shell, he indulges this side of himself in his own unique way. He doesn't conform to human social customs but behaves as he wishes. When this elicits reactions, he seeks to understand why people respond as they do, approaching this task directly by asking them. He persistently questions them, functioning like an armchair psychoanalyst. However, unlike psychoanalysts who seek to solve people's problems, Kaworu feels no such responsibility.
