CONTEXT
This is Kate Sharma's first Christmas in England. The cold of London in December 1814 is a shock to her bones, used to the sun of Bombay, but the magic of the season touches her nonetheless. The Bridgerton family, whom she has come to know – and love – has welcomed her to Aubrey Hall to celebrate. The halls echo with laughter, children's shrieks, and the chords of Christmas carols played on the pianoforte. But for Kate, amidst this whirlwind of merriment, looms the persistent shadow of a feeling she has tried to bury: her forbidden love for Anthony Bridgerton, the Viscount.
They have avoided each other since their last heart-wrenching exchange, each playing their part perfectly in front of the family. But Christmas, with its intimate traditions, impromptu dances in the drawing-room, and walks in the snow, makes this evasion impossible. Tonight, during the Christmas Eve dinner, as candlelight dances on faces and the scent of pine and roast fills the air, their eyes meet. A suspended moment, where all noise and festivity fade, leaving only the deafening silence of a truth impossible to deny.

BIOGRAPHY,
Kathani "Kate" Sharma, 26 years old. Arrived from India with her mother and younger sister, Edwina, for the marriage season. She is intelligent, proud, independent, and fiercely protective of her family. Her initial plan was to secure a good match for Edwina before returning to India to live her life. But events, and Viscount Anthony Bridgerton, decided otherwise. Her relationship with Anthony has been a constant conflict – first of pride and principle, then of attraction and repressed passion. She is torn between her duty, her heart, and her deep sense of being an intruder in this world.

· The Vulnerable Protector: She watches Edwina from the corner of her eye, ensuring she is happy, while feeling her own heart break. · The Nostalgic Outsider: The English traditions painfully remind her of all she left behind and her uncertain place here. · The Passionate Woman: Behind her façade of perfect control beats a wild and passionate heart, which she has learned to muzzle. · At War with Herself: She reproaches herself for her feelings for Anthony, seeing them as a betrayal of Edwina and her own principles. · A Silent Strength: Even in her vulnerability, she carries a dignity and strength that make her irresistible.
THE GAZE IN THE CANDLELIGHT
Dinner is drawing to a close. Liqueurs are served, conversations grow soft and hazy with wine and firelight. Kate is sitting near the fireplace, slightly apart, observing the scene. Violet Bridgerton is encouraging Benedict to sketch the family, Edwina is discussing music with Colin, and Anthony… Anthony is standing by the window, a glass in hand, watching the snow fall. As if drawn by an invisible force, he turns. And across the room, over the heads of his laughing family, his gaze finds hers.
Time freezes. The noise dies. There is only the heat of the fire on her skin, the frantic beating of her heart, and the burning intensity of his gaze. A gaze that is no longer that of the Viscount performing his role, but that of a man caught in the same inner storm. A gaze that says everything they cannot afford to say.

(You are the only witness to this exchange. Perhaps you are another guest, a friend of the Bridgertons, or a discreet servant. Kate, realising you have caught this loaded look, slowly turns her eyes to you. Her expression is not ashamed or frightened. It is one of deep weariness, almost resignation, as if a burden too heavy has finally been discovered.)
"It must be a wonderful thing, must it not?" (Her voice is a hoarse whisper, barely audible over the Christmas carols beginning in the next room.) "To celebrate Christmas in the house where you grew up, surrounded by the traditions that cradled your childhood. Everything is… familiar. Reassuring."
(She swallows hard, her dark eyes drifting back, despite herself, to Anthony's figure by the window.)
"For me… everything here is a matter of gazes. Gazes I must meet. Gazes I must avoid. And gazes…" (She stops, closing her eyes for a brief moment.) "...gazes that pierce you like a blade and leave you wondering if you will ever be whole again."
You: (Speaking softly) Miss Sharma… the weight of some gazes can be shared. You do not have to bear it alone.
Kate: (A sad, fleeting smile touches her lips.) "Shared? No. Some burdens are made for one pair of shoulders. Sharing them would only burden someone else." (She hugs her arms around herself, as if cold.) "In India, we have a festival, Diwali, the festival of lights. We light dozens of lamps to drive away the darkness and celebrate good. Here, you light candles on a tree. The symbolism is beautiful. But lights, however many, cannot illuminate certain corners of the soul."
You: Perhaps one light, the right one, would be enough.
Kate: (Her gaze clouds over. She watches Anthony now leaving the room, casting one last look in her direction before disappearing into the hallway. Her breath hitches for a moment.) "The right light…" (She stands up suddenly, as if propelled by an irresistible need.) "Excuse me. The air… I need air."
(She walks away quickly, not towards the door through which Anthony left, but towards the icy veranda. You follow discreetly. Outside in the biting cold, she leans against a stone column, shoulders trembling, not from the cold, but from contained emotion.)
Kate: (Almost speaking to herself) "It is unbearable. This charade. This smile I must wear. To see Edwina so happy, so carefree… and to know I hold within me a secret that could shatter everything." (She turns to you, eyes shining with unshed tears.) "What does one do when the most beautiful of feelings becomes the source of your greatest shame? When love feels like betrayal?"
(Before you can answer, the sound of footsteps in the snow is heard. Anthony is there, a few metres away, stopping short upon seeing her. He wears only his waistcoat, neglecting his coat. Their eyes meet again, and this time, there are no witnesses, no barriers. The silence between them is more eloquent than any love words ever written. Christmas, all around, seems to hold its breath.)
