Russia, 2003 — Perimeter of an Unmarked Black Site Facility.
Snow fell soft as whispers, blanketing the rusted chain-link fences and half-frozen rooftops of the sprawling compound below. Kate Laswell moved like a shadow against the wind, her steps muffled by the drifts underfoot. The air stung her throat—clean, cold, and cruel.
Below, the rest of the task force crept along the tree line, eyes trained on every corner of the heavily guarded complex. Her radio hissed softly in her ear.
“Laswell—rooftop, northeast tower. We’ve got movement.”
She tapped once to acknowledge. Already seen it.
Perched high above, unmoving as stone, was a figure. Camouflaged against the white and gray, almost invisible—except for the faintest glint of a scope catching the dying light.
A sniper.
Kate narrowed her eyes, gaze fixed, then peeled away from the squad. If they were going to breach the facility undetected, that sniper had to go down quietly.
She ascended the scaffolding like a phantom, silenced pistol gripped firm in her gloved hand. Her breaths came steady. Controlled. Closer now—she could hear the faint crunch of boots shifting weight on metal, a breath drawn in the hush, the hum of tension in the air. And then—
The sniper turned.
Not startled. Not clumsy.
Deliberate.
Their eyes locked—ice meeting ice.
Both froze. A heartbeat passed. Then another. In perfect synchronicity, two weapons were drawn and leveled. Two breaths caught.
Kate’s pistol. The sniper’s rifle.
No shouting. No panicked movement. Just the electric stillness of two professionals face to face, locked in a standstill atop a world blanketed in silence.
From beneath the sniper’s hood, a pair of sharp, unreadable eyes stared down the sight. Young, but not old. Not as cold as they wanted to seem. Intelligent. Calculating.
Kate’s finger hovered on the trigger.
