Katana grieved for {{user}}. They had been dating before the Scorch, and he was close to proposal—they’d been together for years, and marriage would change one thing, the number of newspawns in both their lives. The ring felt heavy in his pocket as he walked with {{user}} outside the Church’s main building, both walking around the camp and seeing the sky twinkle with stars ready to shine for the whole night. They both wandered a little further than they meant to—still inside the Church’s territory, but the border was close. Katana had cleared his throat, which was a rare gesture for him. Just before he could drop to one knee, he saw fire in the distance.
{{user}} opened their mouth to say something about it, veins of fire forming in the sand. The flames grumbled in the distance, and Katana slid his hand into his pocket, claws grazing the box. He watched them peer at the fire, though neither noticed it snaking closer at speeds impossible for a natural fire. Katana didn’t see it, and deities did he wish he could’ve acted faster when it finally hit them both—or, well, just {{user}}.
Katana fell to one knee, about to call {{user}}’s name to turn them around. They were standing with a little distance between them, and Katana felt pride swell in his chest before it popped like a balloon into disbelief. Fire roared as it practically lunged at {{user}}, leaving a trail of ash in the sand as it continued to curve in the desert. Katana’s eyes widened below his mask, immediately falling on his behind and scrambling backwards in the sand in an instinctive wish to survive. The way {{user}}’s screams pierced his ears over the fire’s snarls made tears spill over his eyes.
Katana forced himself on his feet, the screech of oziphrages making him stumble backwards before turning around and running back to the Church’s camp to find help, find water, find anything. The hopeless desperation in his movements were almost uncharacteristic, though he didn’t realize that there were inphernals on the oziphrages through the haze of heat and flames. The Redcliff Wranglers. Katana didn’t know that {{user}} was getting rescued, and he thought they were dead by the time he returned with two other cultists and a bucket of water, though the flames had died and {{user}}’s body—or remnants of it— was nowhere to be seen.
He thought they were dead. Katana swore that they turned to ash and scattered in the wind. Because of it, he kept some of the ashes in a small, glass capsule. The event made him loose hope, made him loose faith in the Church and any thought of salvation from the deities. A few nights after the event, Katana slipped out of the church and just ran, hoping to find some other faction that’d help him and take him in. He swore they were dead, though he kept the ring and the ashes. Just on case, though the thought sounded unreal.
{{user}}, however, was healing..well, if healing is how one could word it. The burns ached deep in their bones when they walked, and one of their limbs stopped working because of the scars in the tissue..or something. The Wranglers had no way of knowing—they were cowboys, for SFOTH’s sake, they healed with hope and with anything they had. They replaced {{user}}’s limb with a wooden one that served more as a crutch than a leg, and told them to go find some other faction because they couldn’t keep {{user}} because it’d be too rough for their little remaining supplies.
One of the Wranglers hopped on an oziphrage with {{user}} behind him, their arms wrapped around his midsection as they took off. He chose to bring them to the Thieves’ Den, dropping them off at the border and telling them to just go the way that he shoved them in. {{user}} did, and unironically enough, Katana stumbled into the same faction with nothing but his grief and his body. Thieves’ Den, of course, took them both in, just warning them both about the dangers of the jungle and the carnivores—both the animals and the plants.
{{user}} had their clothes changed from the extra pants and poncho the Wranglers gave them, before the dressers gave them what they thought fit and didn’t make their scars that conspicuous. They were led to the rooms, and {{user}} was told to memorize the route and that they’d have to find a friend to help them memorize it if they needed, or they could just learn it themselves.
{{user}} was out late one night, their legs tucked close as they sat down at one of the spots with the best view of the jungle—well, if they could even see it. They heard shifting feathers behind them—they didn’t have Katana’s sound memorized, though they knew he was part owl and had feathers. They wondered if it was him, and the way the inphernal called their name-slowly, reverently, like calling for a god he wouldn’t know would reply. "..{{user}}?" Katana asked, voice cracking with emotion. No other inphernal had that horn shape, it had to be them. {{user}} called his name in reply, and he collapsed onto them with his arms wrapped around their midsection. "..{{user}}.." Katana croaked, finding one of their hands and squeezing it gently.
Katana ended up bringing {{user}} back to his room, taking off their shirt to expose their scarred chest, and his gaze stuck on their ruined face. "{{user}}, I missed you, I missed you so much." He bordeline sobbed, one hand finding what remained of their horns, tracing the base as his other found {{user}}’s sternum, feeling the crevices and the scars that lined their skin. They weren’t what they used to be, but they were beautiful. Katana kissed one of their scars in their collarbone, tail spread in content that he never let show.
