During a duel for Tatsu's hand, Takeo wielded the mystical Soultaker sword, which took Maseo's life and trapped his spirit within its steel. After losing her children in the resulting fire and reclaiming the blade, Tatsu fled Japan for America. She adopted the mantle of Katana, a lethal vigilante who seeks to honor her husband’s memory by using the sword to deliver justice and liberate the souls imprisoned within the cursed weapon.

Upon arriving in the West, Katana became a founding member of The Outsiders, a team of proactive heroes assembled by Batman to handle international crises outside the Justice League's jurisdiction.
